Bigg Boss 6 was the sixth season of the Indian reality TV show Bigg Boss, which is telecast on the TV channel Colors. Bigg Boss is the Indian edition of Big Brother (TV series). The season started from 7 October 2012. Salman Khan, who was the host of the previous two seasons, returned as the host for the show.[1] The sixth season was launched as a Parivarik season with a Gujarati tagline- Alag che! (English: It's different). The producers claimed that the contestants on Bigg Boss 6 will be presented with a cleaner, more "family like image". The prize money was reduced to ₹5 million (US$59,909.50) with an amount of 500,000s awarded to the "most entertaining" housemate each week from week 6 onwards. The award was discontinued after four weeks for unknown reasons.
The series was won by soap actress Urvashi Dholakia on 12 January 2013. Imam Siddiqui was the first runner up while Sana Khan and Niketan Madhok were second and third runner-ups respectively.

Controversies
- Soon after the entry of Kashif Qureshi, a common man chosen via auditions held across India, as an inmate of the house the whole exercise of selecting an unknown person to be part of Bigg Boss seemed to have come into question and has been reportedly a planned one. After Kashif was selected from the three short-listed hopefuls to enter the house the media scrutinised every detail that linked to Kashif's background. Unexpectedly Qureshi was found to personally know Salman Khan since he was shooting Wanted.[19][20][21]
- RPI leader Ramdas Athawale and members objected cartoonist Aseem Trivedi's stay in the house warning the Bigg Boss team of their imminent uproar. With a meeting with Colors executives it was revealed that Aseem would be evicted from the house on Friday and this has, hence, been the reason for introducing double eviction for week four, a first in Bigg Boss history. On 31 October two men were witnessed pelting stones at the channel's headquarters to stress the fulfilment of their demand.[22][23] This has been, in turn, widely covered by the media as the main reason for Trivedi's ouster from the show.[24]
- Following similar controversies from season 5 Salman Khan was again accused of being condescending towards specific housemates. Sapna Bhavnani who got into a verbal spat with Khan, on week 3's eviction night, was reported calling him a "serial woman beater" in the footage which was edited before airing.[25][26] On the night of Aseem Trivedi's exit from the house Sapna refused to communicate with Khan. When Khan was seen questioning Sapna's morals Navjot Singh Sidhu and a few other housemates favoured Sapna over Khan resulting in a heated debate over the topic.[27] Trivedi who was interviewed by Khan a night later on Sunday claimed that Khan was purposely interrogating him with questions that targeted Bhavnani indirectly.[28] He also impeached Khan's credibility as a neutral host highlighting his on-screen demeanor towards housemates which he personally dislikes.[29]
- Kavita Radheshyam who was earlier approached to enter the house as a wild card entry instead of Mink Brar claimed that she turned down the offer because the Bigg Boss team wanted her to purposely flirt with Rajev Paul to initiate anxiety inside Delnaaz Irani who is Paul's ex-wife and contestant of the same season. According to the script presented to Kavita she was supposed to come up with a "patch-up strategy" and bring the estranged couple closer thus producing drama for the show.[30]
- Even weeks after their initial tiff Salman Khan was seen targeting Sapna Bhavnani and Aseem Trivedi almost constantly every Friday night when he communicated with the housemates to announce the eviction. A few weeks after Trivedi's eviction Khan termed him as a homosexual man while he picked on Bhavnani for her relationship with Aseem. Reportedly Bipasha Basu, who visited the house for a short amount of time, was instructed by Khan to act cold towards Bhavnani despite being on good terms with her. A day before the nominations Khan entered the house to promote his recently released film Dabangg 2 and was seen avoiding contact with Sapna while his stay inside.[31]
- Kashif Qureshi's controversial entry into the official list of housemates iterated a background check into Salman Khan's acquaintances. Reports revealed that another housemate Niketan Madhok gained an place in the final list courtesy of Salman's recommendation.[32] Spotted in Salman's parties and vacations photos Madhok was further corroborated to be one of Khan's close friends. As consequence Madhok was not only seen cursor through evictions despite lack of fanbase but was also deliberately reserved a spot in the finals in the twelfth week.[33][34] In an online poll conducted by IBN Live 75 per cent people voted Salman Khan to be biased.[34]
- Soon after Urvashi Dholakia's win an uprising roared across India protesting the winner to be unworthy of the title. On the night of the finale #BB6 was seen trending in India on microblogging site Twitter with fans demanding a re-count of the votes. Followers flooded twitter with comments against Khan and the show's producer to have rigged the results. Reports revealed that fan favourite Imam Siddiqui was robbed off the title as a consequence of his early tiff with Khan.[35]
Ratings, Reception and Viewership
- The final episode on 12 January clocked a 4.4 TVR (television rating points), becoming the highest-rated non-fiction show during the week.[36] The finale also fared better than its previous season, which had dropped to 3.6 TVR. In the fourth season, the finale had clocked a 6.7 TVR. The fall in the ratings last year had forced the channel to tweak the format a bit and make it more family-oriented. The show averaged 3.3 TVR in the week ended 12 January compared to 2.8 in the trailing week.[37]
