Phantom – A Story You Wish Were True is an upcoming Indian political thriller film directed by Kabir Khan, and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. It stars Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles. The film is about the post-26/11 attacks in Mumbai and global terrorism. The screenplay of the film has been written in co-ordination with author Hussain Zaidi, and is an adaptation of his book Mumbai Avengers. The trailer was released on 25 July 2015.[2][3][4] The film is scheduled for release on 28 August 2015.[5]

Synopsis

Phantom is a political thriller set in the volatile climate that exists in South Asia. Constant terror attacks against India have left the Indian people feeling vulnerable and angry. The Indian government and security agencies are helpless as the masterminds of the attacks are out of reach. When an infiltrator with plans to attack India is caught, the Head of India’s security agency and his team take matters into their own hands. The film follows the protagonist Daniyal (Saif Ali Khan), whose journey to seek justice takes him to India, Europe, America and the volatile Middle East. Local assets in various countries help Daniyal, including Nawaz Mistry (Katrina Kaif) who works for an American security agency. Daniyal and Nawaz are drawn into a battle of wits with a shrewd and ruthless enemy. With the enemy hot on their heels, Daniyal and Nawaz against all odds try and finish the job they had set out to do. Along the way they find out that in a mission like this there is always a price to pay, in this case a very personal price.[6]

Development

Kabir Khan and prominent crime author Hussain Zaidi had come together to collaborate on Kabir's then untitled film, based on the scenario after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and on global terrorism.[8] The screenplay of the film is an adaptation and is co-written in conjunction with Hussain's then unreleased book. Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif[9] were cast in leading roles, as secret agents/mercenaries. Katrina Kaif was selected to play Parsi Indian girl Nawaz Mistry in the film.[10] The film earlier had a working title as Daniyal Khan, before being titled Phantom.[11] Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif have reportedly learnt Kurdish and Arabic for their roles.[12][13]

Filming

Filming began on October 2013 in Beirut, Lebanon. Around 10% of the film was shot in Lebanon in areas including downtown Beirut, the populous area of Khandaq al-Ghameeq, and the mountainous areas of Kfardebian, with the latter two representing Syria.[14] The shoot of the film required a recreation of a Syrian refugee camp, which involved almost 400 locals to act as rebel militias. The sets of the film were so realistic that many people in the area believed actual militia groups had set up camp, and the Lebanese army began circling planes over the set. However the confusion was cleared after the first day.[15] Due to the country's recent political turmoil, security was provided to the crew.[16] A few days into shooting, an accident occurred on the set where two local artists were injured after being hit by a car.[17] Shooting was also done in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir in January 2014,[18][19] and in Malerkotla, Punjab.[20] In August 2014 shooting resumed in London, United Kingdom and Vancouver, Canada.[21] In September 2014 the last schedule of the film was completed in Mumbai, with scenes being shot at the city's eastern ferry wharf, near the Gateway of India, and at Filmistan Studios in the suburb of Goregaon.[22][23] Both Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif have performed intense action sequences, and have not used stunt doubles for most of their scenes, having instead done the scenes themselves.[24] An underwater action sequence has been shot by Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif at the Orca Dive Club in Mumbai.[25] The shooting of the film was completed in 90 days.[1]

Kabir Khan has modeled two prime antagonists in the film on the actual masterminds behind the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and has named the other two after David Headley and Sajid Mir. To ensure the content of the film does not get too explosive, the makers have prudently decided to change the name of the first two villains to Harif Saeed and Sabauddin Umvi respectively.[26]

Post-production

The film was cleared with a 'UA' certificate (Unrestricted Public Exhibition - but with a word of caution that Parental discretion required for children below 12 years[27]) by India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with minimum cuts and was met with applause from the panel members of the Censor Board.[28]

Marketing

The trailer of the film was launched in an event in Mumbai on 25 July 2015 with the presence of Kabir Khan, Sajid Nadiadwala, Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif[29] and was released on YouTube the same day. As of 6 August 2015, the trailer has crossed 3 millions views.[6][30]

The film is being promoted mainly through social media such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook by the production houses, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and UTV Motion Pictures. A promotional song titled 'Afghan Jalebi (Ya Baba)[31]' was released on 30 July 2015 as a platform to promote and increase the film's visibility to the audience prior to its release. The music video featured the film's female lead, Katrina Kaif surrounded by a group of singers and dancers, the song was choreographed by Ahmed Khan (choreographer). The song was shot at Mehboob Studio in Mumbai.[32] Despite being known for her immensely popular dance numbers in Bollywood films, Katrina Kaif had to give dancing a miss in the song as she had to stay true to her character as a spy who works for an American security agency and the theme of the film which is a hardcore intense action thriller.[33] Kabir Khan also confirmed that the film has no lip-sync songs as it was intended as a far more serious exploration of a political issue.[34] The song was met with positive response, crossing 3 million views on YouTube within a week.

The worldwide premiere of the film will be held at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne on its closing night, 27 August 2015 (one day before the film's theatrical release).[35]

The soundtrack of the film is composed by Pritam Chakraborty while lyrics are by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Kausar Munir.[36][37] The music rights have been acquired by T-Series[38] [39] The full soundtrack was released on 10 August 2015.
