I agree how does someone edit it if it's locked. I just think that this should have been changed years ago. They need to change their pronouns immediately. [[User:Editor.angel23|Editor.angel23]] ([[User talk:Editor.angel23|talk]]) 06:33, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Pronouns

Anyone have a source for Stenberg's pronouns? EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 02:22, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@EvergreenFir: http://amandla.tumblr.com/post/143141720588/what-are-your-preferred-pronouns-this-is-important Wocea (talk) 02:31, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As stated here: http://amandla.tumblr.com/post/143143078983/hey-all-yall-changing-my-pronouns-on-my-wiki please don't change the pronouns on this page unless they specify otherwise. Wocea (talk) 02:35, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. She/her for now. Thanks for the link. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 02:41, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Wocea: Any idea if Stenberg wants the non-binary identity kept off wikipedia? It's covered by enough sources to include, but could reasonably be excluded given that it's not super widely sourced. Given that they had a preference for pronouns, thought I'd ask. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 02:56, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@EvergreenFir: Honestly, I have no idea, I'd imagine if they didn't say anything about it previously then it's fine, I don't see anything about it on their blog. Wocea (talk) 03:13, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Wocea: Okay thanks! EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 03:20, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@EvergreenFir: Yeah it's fine the way it is: http://amandla.tumblr.com/post/143154836283/hey-hey-are-you-cool-with-your-wiki-citing-that Wocea (talk) 16:22, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Wocea: Awesome. Thanks! EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 18:03, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sternberg has recently said they prefer they/them pronouns. I edited the article to reflect this. http://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/news/a39858/amandla-stenberg-reveals-the-pronouns-shed-rather-be-called-than-she/≤≥×÷ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.246.224.38 (talk) 02:33, 4 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This doesn't seem anything new? It still seems to end with "please keep it she/her up there for now" with the idea of "hoping it would stay within the tumblr realm for now." It's a bit of an odd situation compared to the more standard pronoun changes we've seen in the past. Let's just wait it out and see what happens: there is no deadline and Stenberg clearly doesn't mind the feminine pronoun-usage here. ~Mable (chat) 06:34, 4 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Also there seems to be a misconception that non-binary people need to use they/them, which is incorrect. We can use many/any pronouns if we choose. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 17:29, 4 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Same here ~Mable (chat) 19:13, 4 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Nyuszika7H: Regarding your edit summary, if Stenberg did want to use they/them pronouns exclusively, I don't think that'd be a problem. Singular they and gender neutral referents like Mx. are not limited to Tumblr. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 03:07, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@EvergreenFir: I know, you're right, I was just annoyed at that moment, in fact I also use singular they when referring to people with unknown gender (haven't really interacted much with non-binary people). nyuszika7h (talk) 08:46, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Stenberg has actually stated that she prefers that the pronouns not be changed in her Wikipedia article. ("hey @ all y'all changing my pronouns on my wiki page - that’s awesome but I also haven’t talked to my publicist or family about it yet. I was kind of hoping it would stay within the tumblr realm for now as it will probably throw off potential employers and producers who want to hire me for movies - they often look at wiki pages. please keep it she/her up there for now. thanks") See here and here. Between this and MOS:IDENTITY ("When there is a discrepancy between the term most commonly used by reliable sources for a person or group and the term that person or group uses for themselves, use the term that is most commonly used by reliable sources ..."), there should be little left to discuss. General Ization Talk 00:57, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I said just a few lines above. We're constantly dealing with people changing her pronouns on here incorrectly, though. Quite ill-spirited... ~Mable (chat) 13:06, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The previous discussion about pronouns was in 2016. It seems sources are now regularly using they/them, and often mentioning explicitly that Stenberg prefers they/them pronouns.

From 2017, explicitly stating the preference for they/them: [1]

For Amandla, specifically, that means eschewing the use of female pronouns for the gender neutral they/them.

From 2017, using they/them: [2]

Amandla Stenberg's Explanation For Not Using Female Pronouns Is Just The Latest Example Of How Inspiring They Are

From 2017, using they/them: [3]

They’re only 18 years old, but Amandla Stenberg has been using their voice to create change since they won over fans as Rue in The Hunger Games.

From 2018, explicitly stating the preference for they/them: [4]

The 19-year-old, who made their name in The Hunger Games series and uses gender-neutral they/them pronouns, has previously come out as queer and – in 2016 – as bisexual.

From 2018, using they/them: [5]

In the past Stenberg has identified as queer, bisexual, pansexual and gender fluid, but in this new interview they opened up about identifying as gay for the first time.

Think we can change the pronouns to they/them now? --ChiveFungi (talk) 17:44, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. Very thorough. Couldn't be clearer I'd say. ~Mable (chat) 13:01, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not convinced, but I'm not totally opposed, either. The quotation from the interview that forms the basis of the first three links you provided (I'm comfortable with using the pronouns 'they' or 'them' alongside 'she' and 'her' just because that's a conversation that's important to me.) does not indicate a preference, which makes me think that Stenberg's thinking may have changed since the 2016 tumblr post (They/them it is.). However, all five of those sources do use they/them when referring to Stenberg, which does seem to render the "for now" part of the second 2016 tumblr post (please keep it she/her up there for now.) no longer applicable. -- irn (talk) 17:37, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We could keep the pronouns the same (as they don't seem to have a preference), but simply just mention that they use both she/her and they/them pronouns?QueerFilmNerdtalk 18:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to Personal Life section

I agree with Drmies about the Kylie Jenner feud being removed. Lacks lasting notability (WP:NOTNEWS). I'd like to see the charity work stuff added back, but feel it needs better sources lest it be too promotional. I tried to get better sources in addition to self-published ones regarding her identity. Will keep looking to add to it. Did find something about a comic she was making. Not done: as you have not cited reliable sources to back up your request, without which no information should be added to, or changed in, any article. - Arjayay (talk) 16:02, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Amandla means power and it was used as a chant during the South African Apartheid times by the black people to show that they were not afraid of the white people and were not going to back down on a fight for freedom. Amandla is a name in two different languages isiZulu and isiXhosa. Amandla❤️❤️✊🏽 Li'l bougee Girl (talk) 22:03, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

College

Hello, I read that Amandla announced in 2016 that she would attend NYU Film School this year. I haven't found any sources confirming that she is currently attending the college, so I just added the announcement itself. Let me know if you see any issues with this. Amandla's heritage fix request June 26, 2018

Amandla is not Jewish. This was erroneously added due to a single mistaken source - The Root in 2012. She's been interviewed and profiled numerous times and has never claimed to be Jewish because she is in fact not Jewish. Stenberg is a Swedish name. Her father is Danish, with a historically Swedish name. Zora Baldwin (talk) 00:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Niobe section edit request 11/24/18

Hey I'm doing a project for a class and wanted to add some information on the part about Stenberg's work with the Niobe comic. The edit is below and also in my sandbox

Career

Stenberg co-wrote the comic book Niobe: She is Life with Sebastian Jones. The book is an offshoot Jone's graphic novel The Untamed.[1] It is set in a fantasy world and follows the journey a half elf half human princess.[2] According to Jones its the first nationally distributed comic that has a black woman as the protagonist while also having a black woman as the author and another as the artist.[3] Jones wanted her help in creating the comic because it revolved around a young female character.[4] The first issue, illustrated by Ashley A. Woods, was published in November 2015.[5][6] In May 2017 the pair released Niobe: She is Death, the second part of the trilogy.[7] Kkmainiac (talk) 19:30, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kkmainiac: I did a tiny bit of copy-editing, and I think the paragraph as you wrote it in your sandbox works for this article. The only concern I have is that the YouTube video may not be a proper reliable source per Wikipedia guidelines, but it's not used to cite anything dubious, controversial, or opinionated, so I'm sure it's fine. You can copy this paragraph to this article if you like, replacing the short currently existing paragraph about the comic. Be sure to copy in the source code, and not the raw front-end text like you did above. We don't want the sources to look like this[1], after all. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 15:13, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Activism: Amandla has been a key figure in raising awareness surrounding and fighting for LBGTQ rights. She has largely done this through multiple social media platforms, including Tumblr- the social media site where she announced to the world that she has adopted a non-binary and bisexual identity. Amandla also engages in discussions about gender online and openly declares her disagreement with current understandings of gender identity. Her status as a non-binary and bisexual actor has allowed her to be a very powerful activist figure and a model for others who also defy gender norms.

Factfanatic1 (talk) 02:04, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Amandla uses both they and she pronouns. She has stated this publicly and this is stated and there are reliable sources in the personal life section of her page. She dresses femininely and presents herself like a young woman and also most people know her for her most famous roles which her all girls or young women like Rue (The Hunger Games), Starr Carter (The Hate U Give), and Maddy (Everything, Everything). The page also lists her as an actress and the word "she" is used at the beginning of the article and then suddenly it changes to addressing Amandla as "they."

Basically, it would be best to address Amandla using "she" pronouns. Not only does she use these pronouns but she presents as a woman and the vast majority of people that know her know her for her roles as women, particuarly as Rue in The Hunger Games and Starr in The Hate U Give. This page needs consistency with her pronouns and "she" is the right pronoun to use.Factfanatic1 (talk) 02:10, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done: As they have a preference for both, leaving the pronouns at they is fine. I just changed the pronouns to be consistent within the article. QueerFilmNerdtalk 02:59, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why isn't there an awards and nominations section?

Amandla has received a good amount of awards and award nominations. Why don't we add a section for that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Factfanatic1 (talkcontribs) 05:48, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sexuality and Gender Inconsistency

It is my understanding that the category of "gay" refers to men who have sex mostly with men. This would not apply strictly to the subject as they do not identify as a man. So, I would suggest that the identification of them as "gay" be removed because it does not actually describe their sexual orientation, but is more of a subcultural affiliation or slang term for LGBTQ people at large. Basically, someone cannot be simultaneously bisexual, pansexual, nonbinary, and """gay""" per se at once, so we should choose whether to state explicitly that "gay" is a self-descriptor, remove description of Amandla as gay, or revise the established fact that they identify as nonbinary and pansexual.

Amandla refers to herself as "gay", but previously identified as pan and bi. The current section reflects that. They identify as gay and non-binary. QueerFilmNerdtalk 08:08, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect grammar in first paragraph of career AtariFX (talk) 00:16, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

 Question: @AtariFX: Is the following the change you want made, if not, then please be more specific.

Amandla Stenberg's pronouns

In the latest articles i've read, it was stated that Amandla Stenberg uses they/them pronouns. If someone could change every she/her pronouns with they/them pronouns, it would be very cool. Also change every gendered pronoun by a neutral alternative or use the inclusive dot. Also, if you've seen an even mor recent article that says they use both they/them and she/her pronouns, remember to use they/them pronouns from time to time, at best 50% they/them 50% she/her. Otherwise it would be considered as non-binary erasure and transphobic towards Amandla Stenberg. When someone uses multiple pronouns, use all of them, not just those YOU prefer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.7.140.70 (talk) 12:58, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Although Amandla does identify as non-binary, she has specifically said that she doesn't want her Wikipedia page's pronouns to change from "she" pronouns to "they" pronouns as she's known for being an actress. Also, less important but still important, the public knows her for her roles as women and as an actress. She talks about this in these two links: [6] & [7] Factfanatic1 (talk) 22:54, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Could OP please link the most recently article that you've read? A lot of Amandla's interviews are 2-4 years old at this point. The most recent (a 2018 interview) had her saying that she was fine with she/her and they/them, unless a newer one that I missed. QueerFilmNerdtalk 03:42, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
