Kevin Vuong is a Canadian politician who was elected to represent the riding of Spadina—Fort York in the House of Commons of Canada in the 2021 Canadian federal election.[4] Although on the ballot as a Liberal party member, Vuong will sit as an independent if he accepts his seat in the House of Commons.[5]
Early life and education
Vuong's parents are Vietnamese refugees, and he grew up in Brampton, Ontario.[2] He received a business degree from University of Western Ontario and a Masters of Laws from University of Toronto.[2]
Military career
Vuong is a Naval reserve public affairs officer.[2]
Political career
In his 2018 run for a seat on Toronto City Council, Vuong claimed he was pressured to drop out of the race by incumbent councillor Joe Cressy.[6]
In the months and weeks preceding the 2021 Canadian federal election, the Toronto Star and other regional newspapers reported on his 2019 sexual assault charge and its later withdrawal[7] as well as the $1.5 million lawsuit[8] filled against him for his mask making business. The sexual assault charge was made by a woman he went on a date with in 2019, and the lawsuit filled was made by a woman involved in the start up of the mask making business. Vuong did not disclose either the withdrawn charge or the ongoing lawsuit with the Liberal Party, despite it being a requirement that he disclose such information during the vetting process. Due to the lack of disclosure, the Liberal Party has stated that Vuong will not be allowed to caucus with them.[9]
Ontario Liberal Party Leader Steven Del Duca further said that "Kevin would not have a place within the Ontario Liberal Party" and "should examine his conscience"[10].
