Quite obviously he’s rightly regarded as the best ever Welsh player but it wouldn’t be silly to argue that he usurps the vast majority of great players to come from all four nations of the UK. He’s undoubtedly up there with Best, Dalglish, Rooney, Law, Matthew’s, Beckham, Gascoigne, Law, Charlton, Hoddle, Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard. Gareth Bale's near-selection for the Great Britain Olympics side in 2012 do not constitute a whole other section of this page. This tournament is for U-23 sides only, not an international team. In addition, he never actually played for the team. The information provided in this section of the article would be better places as an additional paragraph in the "Wales" section of the article, rather than constituting one of its own accord. Thanks.

Gareth Bale Tottenham league cup medal.
Real Madrid have a league cup down for Bale on their website, which is his 2009 runner medal, I would think it would be good to list it in honours, I tried earlier, I would like to know what other editors think. There is no consensus against listing it. Govvy (talk) 14:02, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
- They could be counting the 2008 League Cup, even though Bale wasn't involved in the final. In any case, I would be inclined to include it. He may have only been a runner-up, but recipients do receive a medal and I think WP should reflect this. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:39, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
- Well my problem with 2008 is even know he played against Middlesborough in Spurs first league game of that season and won I don't see a medal on him from this photo, Govvy (talk) 15:20, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
- I agree. I thought it was pretty standard to include runners-up medals in honours lists and I'm not aware of any consensus against including this. Nzd (talk) 16:15, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Nzd: There was never a direct consensus against competitive runner up medals, but PeeJay seems to think otherwise. Govvy (talk) 16:44, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
- It's not up to me to prove why it shouldn't be included, it's up to you to prove why it should. Personally, I've never seen a source that includes runners-up finishes as "honours", but that might just be me. – PeeJay 17:16, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
- I just told you why earlier, because he played in the final and received a medal for his efforts! I provided citation as in the match report, that with a combination of logic should indicate he got a medal! Sites like Soccerway list runner up medals, but wiki doesn't like soccerway. Govvy (talk) 17:31, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
- You "telling me" why it should be included is not evidence, it's just your opinion. And yes, you provided a citation that he was a runner-up in the competition, but you have yet to provide a link to a website that actually lists the 2009 League Cup among his honours. – PeeJay 00:32, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Hmm, well you have three sites that list 2008 honour, Real Madrids own website, Eurosport and Soccerway, which also lists his 2009 runner-up. Considering he played in the 2009 final, that pretty much guarantees a medal, I am still not sure why you want to deny that. Govvy (talk) 12:19, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Review
Early life
- Gareth > Bale
- Unlink Wales. Per WP:OVERLINK, countries should generally not be linked unless they have significant relevance to the subject.
- "attended Eglwys Newydd Primary School at Whitchurch", should that be "in Whitchurch"?
- The opening is ordered slightly oddly here, we go from family (parents) to school, back to family (Pike) and back to school again. I would move Pike to just after his parents and then go into his schooling.
- Cardiff Civil Service Football Club > Cardiff Civil Service. No reason for naming of the club to be any different.
- Football hero > footballing hero?
- Link One-touch football.
- All these points are done, thanks Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Southampton
- Unlink Southampton, linked in previous section.
- The debut and youngest second youngest player claim is unsourced.
- Move ref 14 to the end of the sentence.
- All these points are done, thanks Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
2007–09
- First two sentences are unsourced.
- Unlink Manchester United, linked previously in the article.
- "After some mediocre performances", does the ref support this? It says Assou-Ekotto was favoured and Bale was dropped?
- Two of these points are done, rewording on final point, I will find out the St Patrick source if there is any. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
2009–10
- "playing a record 24 league matches for Spurs", is it a league record or a club record? Probably needs clarifying.
- What is ref 37 for? It's a match report for a draw with Everton that isn't mentioned in the text?
- Benoît Assou-Ekotto's > Assou-Ekotto. First name used in previous paragraph.
- "He finally tasted victory", comes across slightly journalistic.
- "the Champions League qualification place", that should either be places or a Champions League qualification place.
- "moving forward to left wing to accommodate Assou-Ekotto at left-back", source?
- Twente goal is unsourced.
- "In recognition", I would probably add "for his performances" or something similar here as it sounds reads like he won the award for his goal against Twente in the previous sentence.
- Link Welsh Footballer of the Year.
- The final paragraph starts in December before going back to November. Try and keep it in chronological order.
- All these points are done, especially the chrinological issue. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
2011–12
- Move ref 55 to the end of the following sentence, it supports both.
- Done, moved. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Real Madrid
- Do we need six refs for the transfer fee?
- I've trimmed it down to three references (I agree six is too much for any content generally). Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
2013–14
- "On 9 November, Bale assisted Sami Khedira's goal in a 5–1 win over Real Sociedad. On 23 November, Bale scored his fourth league goal in eight games as Madrid defeated Almería 5–0.", are these two instances notable enough for inclusion?
- "The goal made Bale the first Welshman to score a goal in a European Cup/Champions League final (Ian Rush scored in a penaty shoot-out for Liverpool in the 1984 European Cup final)", source? Also is Rush's penalty worth mentioning if it doesn't count anyway?
- All these points are done, removed the Rush penalty as I see that penalty shootouts are not official goals in cup finals. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
2014–15
- "Although the 2014–15 season saw a drop in performance from Bale", source?
- "This was his third trophy as a Real Madrid player.", necessary? This isn't used after any other trophy win.
- Both these points are done, first one sounds like a negative thing for a potential GA. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
2017–18
- Section is quite short, especially compares to his other seasons. Even though he didn't play as much, I'm sure there was plenty of coverage on him.
- Worth expanding that as there would be something before the 2018 CL final, like how they got there with his impact. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Wales
- "breaking a record held by Lewin Nyatanga for the last three months", last three months makes it sound almost like the last three from the point of reading. I would change to something like "set three months earlier."
- Include a mention of what role Brian Flynn held at the time for some context.
- Unlink Giggs, linked previously in the article.
- "full Welsh national team", what's the reason for the full here? Unless there is something to explain, it's not necessary.
- "With Wales, he rose to international attention during the 2010–11 UEFA Champions League with Tottenham", I'm not sure what this is trying to say. It begins "with Wales" but then says he rose to attention with Tottenham?
- All these points are done, when someone points out the last point, I would not notice that until I see this here. That is moved to the Tottenham section with a minor correction. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Euro 2016 campaign
- Unlink Cardiff City Stadium, Slovakia and England, already linked previously.
- Euro 2016 and 1958 World Cup linked in both the first and second paragraph.
- The open top bus image could do with more explanation. "At the Welsh squad's homecoming..." for example.
- Ivor Allchurch linked in second and third paragraphs.
- All these points are done, thanks. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Great Britain
- Welsh FA > FAW.
- Done plus linked for those who are not familiar with the abbreviation. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Trademark application
- Could this sentence be merged with the one below? He is only trademarking it to use on merchandise after all.
- Yes it could and moved to the section below. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Honours
- Three seemingly unsourced honours for Madrid.
- Done, added BBC references for all.
- Comment Also missing his League Cup runner up medal for Tottenham which some people clearly refuse to add. (Ref: 31) Played in the final against Manchester United. Govvy (talk) 11:08, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

- Refs 14, 15, 16, 17 and 20 use FC instead of F.C.

- What makes whoateallthepies (ref 26) and footballnews92.com (ref 34) reliable sources?
- Refs 112-116, 126 and 142 use a different way to display BBC to the rest of the refs, use one style for consistency.
- Refs 121 and 122 use a newspaper location which isn't used anywhere else.
- Ref 124, GOAL.COM > goal.com
- Several of the UEFA references are formatted differently.
- Some refs list the author names last then first and others the opposite, stick to one style for consistency.
Unfortunately, I'm failing this on the grounds that there is simply too much to reasonably be expected to fix here. The refs especially need a thorough overhaul, something which should be dealt with before nomination. I have only reviewed up to ref 150, halfway, as there are clearly a large amount of issues to be dealt with and the problems raised with the first half are ongoing through the remainder. Please bear in mind, this is not a complete review. Once I noticed the problems with the refs, I have simply skimmed the article from Madrid onwards for obvious points that need addressing so that, should you wish to renominate, the article will be in better shape for another review. Kosack (talk) 12:15, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- These references are certainly the issue here which I believe that failed which I did not notice when I nominated that back a few months ago. Although the Daily Mail references were probably not recognised as unreliable at the time of addition, this was not violating WP:RS which it does since the discussion was finalised. I am disappointed that I didn't look at the reference details before nominating so I will amend these in a separate edit as well as expanding the 2017–18 season before re-nominating to get a better chance here. Can't you use any picture doesn't look retarded?
Like https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liver-RM_(2)_(cropped).jpg which is even more recent. --94.254.185.111 (talk) 08:30, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
- Please don't use words like 'retarded'. The current picture is fine. – PeeJay 12:48, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
- Are you making him look special needs on purpose? Use the more recent photo where he makes no handicapped grimace. --94.254.177.182 (talk) 16:42, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- Again, please stop using ableist slurs. He's sticking his tongue out, that's just how the photographer happened to catch him at the time. It's a fine photo, and you've not really provided any compelling reason to change it. – PeeJay 21:15, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

There are 2 reasons:
- It's outdated
- It's not even his normal face
This:
- Is more up to date
- is his actual normal face — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.254.189.214 (talk) 18:06, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- An uncropped version of that photo is already in the article, so it wouldn't be wise to use it again. He hasn't really changed his appearance in the last four years, so a close-up photo is better than a grainy one, even if you think he looks "retarded". – PeeJay 11:54, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Gareth Bale won the 2008 English League Cup with Tottenham, yet it is missing from his Wiki page. Please add it. 2A02:C7F:144B:A00:31DF:F8A1:21EF:75FF (talk) 22:48, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure English honours only usually apply if the player appeared in the final and thus received a medal for that title. He did appear in one League Cup match that season, but is that enough? – PeeJay 01:19, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

Gareth Bale has scored 4 goals for Tottenham in his second stint, not 1. This needs updating.
- He's actually scored six goals since returning to Spurs, but only one of them was in the league. Nothing needs updating. – PeeJay 14:55, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

2016 UEFA Super cup
Bale did not play in the 2016 Super cup but was in the UEFA squad, did he not receive a winner's medal for being part of the 2016 team ? Cltjames (talk) 22:06, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- Was discussed here. Kante4 (talk) 22:22, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- OK, show's good incentive to have a poll. However this is fact based research not a voting system, we need to know if Gareth Bale received one of the 40 medals given to Real Madrid in the 2016 Super Cup game, if so then he is honoured with a trophy that season, if not then the article can stay as it is. Cltjames (talk) 17:18, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- Receiving a medal does not necessarily mean the player should be credited with having won that title. We credit players with honours when they are part of a team’s squad for that tournament. Bale was not listed in the Real Madrid squad for the 2016 Super Cup. – PeeJay 23:45, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- Would the editor controlling this article please respond with comment regard Bale receiving a medal for the 2016 UEFA Super cup, yet there not being any mention of Bale's participation in the squad or the game. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Player awarded medal without playing Cltjames (talk) 13:24, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "the editor controlling this article"? – PeeJay 14:52, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Well, PeeJay, it seems your name is coming up on several articles in regard to football, almost like your controlling these articles. Like I mentioned in the Wikiproject thread, there is a chance to add a note about the fact a medal was received without an appearance, it only makes sense to add every bit of information regarding any player. Cltjames (talk) 15:57, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

Artwork of Bale removed
discussion concluded
|
---|
Image was first removed by @Daemonickangaroo2018: because that user was unsure if the art was stolen or not (I added proof to show the image was not stolen), he/she requested the image for deletion.. although after verifying the work, I reverted the removal and Deamon then thanked me for clearing it up.. although he/she never reverted her/his request, to which is still up for a deletion request. The image was then removed by @PeeJay: because that user thought it had no value.. that's fine, but PeeJay then went onto the image page and then clicked on the deletion request where he/she remarked; "I see very little encyclopaedic value to this artwork. It's not had any public attention, as far as I can tell, and there are far better options when it comes to representation of Bale.".. uploads do not need to have public attention as Wikipedia relies mostly on original content, preferably out of copyright restrictions, so her/his remark was an opinion, and not based on fact, therefore his action breaks wiki's 'Neutral point of view' rule, due to this the image was reverted. Finally, the image was removed by @Kante4: stating; 'several (2) Editors disagreed with you so you should start a discussion'. Therefore, none of the editors above removed the image out of any legitimate reason and the image was removed simply because of misunderstanding, personal opinion and because someone didn't like that there was activity happening within the article's edit history. I'd understand if the image was removed becuase it was not needed, but the way it was removed was just bizarre, no wonder people see wiki as a joke. Hogyncymru (talk) 22:02, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

"Not yet confirmed", per BBC. Seasider53 (talk) 05:34, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- Agree with the BBC source and this link which states " ‘Secondary Transfer Window’ opens on July 7 " so I've part reverted some of today's edits to say he is still contracted as a Real Madrid player till that contract expires. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 13:02, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
I think it would be good to expand to one of the greatest British players of all time.. not just Welsh.
81.101.182.185 (talk) 01:16, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
