One (stylised as ONE) or Tomohiro is the pseudonym of a Japanese manga artist, who is best known for his web manga[2] series One-Punch Man, which was later remade into a digital manga illustrated by Yusuke Murata.[3][4] One serializes the One-Punch Man webcomic on his own website under no official publisher, while the manga remake is serialized in the web version of Weekly Young Jump. His other well-known series, Mob Psycho 100, was serialized in the online version of Weekly Shōnen Sunday, called Ura Sunday.[5]

From October to December 2015, his website got more than 100,000 hits a day, and has logged more than 70 million total visits.[6] One Punch Man was turned into an anime adaptation. Its first season by Studio Madhouse was broadcast between October and December 2015, while its second season by Studio J.C.Staff was broadcast between April and June 2019. His second work Mob Psycho 100 also received an anime adaptation by Studio Bones, and its first season aired between July and September 2016, followed by a second season between January and April 2019 and a third season set to premiere in October 2022.

Early life

ONE has mostly led a private life away from public scrutiny except for a few interviews.[7] ONE spent a quiet childhood in Saitama and Niigata, and while ONE was living with his grandparents in Niigata, his parents bought him a series of manga called Crayon Shin-chan by Yoshito Usui. This series also has its background in Saitama, which made ONE feel not only related to the content of the manga, but also developed his interest in the field of manga, which drove him to start drawing practice.

ONE revealed his first manga creation on his social media which was made when he was around 10 years old, and was named "Sun of the King". This manga repeatedly became an easter egg of the One Punch Man second season anime adaptation.

During college, ONE started publishing webcomics on his own website through his phone, however, they were not doing well, and thus, on the recommendation of a friend, in 2009, he transitioned to publishing his works on Nitosha, a website that lets creators publish their works (especially webcomics) freely. This was also how he started digital art.

In July 2009, he began to publish a short version of One Punch Man in Shintosha, which is a website to let creators to publish their works to the public freely, especially for webcomics, to practice the use of comic original computer software program ComicStudio. After that, the series of One Punch Man was irregularly uploaded to his web page called FC2 on July 3, 2009.[8] Unlike other manga artists in the industry, ONE's drawing ability tends to be more childish and rough. However, due to its humorous setting and fascinating story setting, One Punch Man became popular on the Japanese Internet. In April 2019, the official website of One Punch Man reached a total view of 124 million people, and even once recorded the highest viewing rate of 100,000 on average per day.[8]

Beginning of manga career

Although ONE was interested in the creation of manga, he kept the dream of becoming a manga artist as a secret from others, especially from his family. He did not want to pursue a career that might disappoint them and felt they might be ashamed of him for publishing anime during his free time.[7]

ONE also admitted that he is similar to the Mob, who is the main character from his famous manga Mob Psycho 100, which was serialised on the online version of Weekly Shōnen Sunday called Ura Sunday, officially debuting into the manga industry in April 2012. ONE outlined that he felt like Mob would rather hide his own emotion from others than express them which is similar to his life in a depressed environment until his freshman year of college when he began to publish his original creation online, which made him feel belong after finding a community of aspiring manga artist like him when searching on the web.[7]

The creation of One Punch Man

ONE used to specify that the main protagonist in his first serialised manga One Punch Man, which was published in 2009, whose was named, Saitama, was inspired by his homeland as well as his first childhood manga, Yoshito Usui's Crayon Shin-chan, which set its background in Saitama as well. Besides the name of the character, ONE's style of drawing manga is genuinely influenced by Crayon Shin-chan which is presented in multi-panel and loads of humorous content.

Furthermore, ONE has a special interest in creating a manga hero that has already become the strongest in the world [9][10] which makes him could concentrate on a different perspective of the background setting and storytelling. Unlike the standard superheroes were created, who typically relied on a normal and predictable format like everyday problems which caused them to generally became stronger and stronger. ONE said: "Punching is oftentimes pretty useless against life's problems. But inside One-Punch Man's universe, I made Saitama a sort of guy who was capable of adapting his life to the world that surrounded him, only armed with his immense power. The only obstacles he faces are mundane things, like running short of money."[9] Before ONE officially decided to become a full-time manga artist, he has taken several breaks from updating his webcomic. ONE has taken a one-year-break and paused his webcomic series due to family circumstances in February 2010 and followed with different hiatus including his two-year breaks after releasing the 109th chapter in January 2017, but surprisingly brought the following magnificent chapter in April 2019.[2]

Struggle and challenge

ONE realised his disadvantage in drawing, thus, his manga's view was stopped for a while, which made him take a break from chasing his dream and started reconsidering beginning normal working life as others did. Since he started his career in 2009, meanwhile there is one of the most popular manga artists, Yusuke Murata, who is well known for his illustration of the American football manga Eyeshield 21, which was serialised between July 2002 and June 2009 in Weekly Shōnen Jump, and later adapted into an anime television series. As he was taking his break from popular series before starting his next manga, he was fascinated by ONE's style of storytelling but unfortunately noticed the sad news from ONE about his decision of considering stopping updating One Punch Man,[11] then Murata positively reached the willing of possible collaborated partnership to ONE in which Murata would redraw the whole series of One Punch Man for ONE with his delicate drawing ability. Murata once said that "Around that time, I was actually really sick. I broke out in hives, my inner organs were infected, and I couldn't breathe well with my windpipes swelling. I was in the hospital when I thought, 'Ah, I guess people die just like that.' If I'm going to die, I want to do something I really love to do. I want to draw manga with Mr. ONE. That's what I thought."[11]

They started their collaboration by partnering with two short mangas, which were named "Dangan Tenshi Fanclub" and "Angry Warrior", which received countless positive feedback from their reader, that also announced their collaboration have officially begun.

Viral

The manga went viral following the collaboration of Murata and ONE, as well as join one of the most famous agencies, Weekly Young Jump's spin-off manga website Tonari no Young Jump (となりのヤングジャンプ, Tonari no Yangu Janpu), published by Shueisha.[12][10][13] from Murata's connection in the industry to obtain an opportunity to a publishing deal with them, which coincidentally mainly focus on webcomic publishing like ONE originally did on Shintosha, that becomes his strength on continuously updating “One Punch Man” and rapidly increased his fans due to abnormal setting of the protagonist as well as fierce fight scenes, which successfully broadcast on TV in 4, Oct 2015, that gain a lot of fans and reputation either from nationwide or worldwide. In addition, ONE's manga is not only for relaxation and entertainment but sometimes also satire the corruption of the system, which makes his manga have a wider age range of audiences.

ONE collaborated with manga artist Yusuke Murata to create One Punch Man -Remake-, which is serialised on Tonari no Young Jump. From October to December 2015, the "One Punch Man" TV animation was broadcast and the second season was broadcast in April 2019. On April 21, 2020, Sony's Columbia Pictures announced that a live-action film adaptation was in development. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner are signed on as writers, while Avi Arad will produce [14]

Outstanding of ONE

Storyboard

There's no doubt that ONE has his weakness in his own drawing ability, however, his genuine sense of adjusting the storyboard of manga by balancing the colour of the page, controlling the rhythm of the story fluently, and switching the movement evenly, which is outstanding than other manga artists in the industry[15] and makes his mangas have strong tension to enjoy in. "The existence of a storyboard is like the core life of the manga, despite it is a manga, not a manga, or it's just a symbol," said Inoue Takehiko, whose famous for Slam Dunk.[16]

Setting

ONE's three most famous manga, "One Punch Man", "Mob Psycho", and "MaKai no Ossan" have one thing in common, which all focus on "Character" rather than "Story" presented. ONE used to highlight his creative idea about his main protagonist in each manga, which is "The one who working so hard to survive in this society." For instance, although in the background setting of the "One Punch Man" is serious and devastating, the main protagonist reversely brings up numerous funny element to survive within that severe world. One is using his unique approach to simplify the complicated social structure, but explicitly restore some of the social phenomena.
