Inception

The institute was founded by Ghanshyam Das Birla in 1929 as an intermediate college. During World War II, the Government of India established a technical training center at Pilani to train technicians for defence services and industry. In 1946, it was converted into the Birla Engineering College with degree programmes in electrical and mechanical engineering.[6] The college was set up with very limited infrastructure. Prof. V Lakshminarayan took charge of Vice Principal, Birla College of Engineering in 1946. Masters programme in Electronics began in 1955.[7]

BITS Pilani University

In 1964, the Birla Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Science were merged to form the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) with Dr. G.D.Birla as the founder chairman. Prof. V Lakshminarayan played an important role in the integration of three colleges. In this period of inception (especially during 1964–1970), BITS Pilani received support from the Ford Foundation. This help was intended to make BITS an innovator in the field of technology and science. It also reflected the Foundation's mission to financially aid the cause of knowledge building and the development of organizations. The Ford Foundation also supported an alliance between BITS and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (During 1964-1970).[8] The faculty members at MIT helped to reshape the curriculum at BITS.[9]. BITS Pilani became a Deemed University established vide Sec.3 of the UGC Act,1956 under notification No. F.12-23/63.U-2 of June 18, 1964.

Expansion into Multiple Campuses

Considering the greater demand for quality graduates in the fields of engineering and sciences, BITS Pilani has undergone a gradual and planned expansion since 1999, both in India and abroad, to help meet the demand. In the year 1999, student capacity was expanded from 2500 to 4000. New campuses were established in Dubai (2000) and Goa, India (2004). In 2006, BITS Pilani acquired land of 200 Acres from Andhra Pradesh government through Hyderabad Urban Development Authority for opening up a new campus. The land is located in Jawaharnagar village, Shameerpet Mandal in Rangareddy district.[10][11] The BITS Pilani Hyderabad, India campus started functioning in 2008. BITS also runs a virtual university[12] and an extension center in Bangalore.

Academic Heads
  • Dr. V. Lakshminarayanan, 1946–1969
  • Dr. C.R. Mitra, 1969-1989
  • Dr. S. Venkateswaran, 1989-2006
  • Dr. L.K. Maheshwari, 2006-Present

Chancellor and Academic Head

BITS Pilani has a tradition of long-serving Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors. Its founder Mr. G.D. Birla was the Chancellor since inception until his demise in 1983. He was followed by his son Dr. Krishna Kumar Birla, who was the Chancellor until his death in 2008. Currently Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla is the Chancellor and Mrs. Shobhana Bhartia is the Pro-Chancellor. The first academic head of the institution (initally known as 'Principal') was Dr. V. Lakshminarayanan who served in this capacity from 1946 to 1969. He was succeed by BITS Directors Dr. C.R. Mitra (1969-1989) and Dr. S. Venkateswaran (1989-2006). With the opening of multiple campuses, the overall head came to be known as 'Vice Chancellor', while 'Director' denoted the head of a campus. Currently, Dr. L.K. Maheshwari is the Vice Chancellor and the fourth academic head of the institute since its inception.

Admission

Pilani,Goa and Hyderabad Campuses

Since 2005, admits to BITS campuses have been offered to students based on their performance in an all-India Entrance Examination called BITS Admission Test (BITSAT). BITSAT, an admission test exclusive to the BITS Pilani university, is a test conducted online and held between May 1 and June 10 in many cities all over India. The exam tests the candidate's knowledge, reasoning and analytical abilities in English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Logical reasoning, and is based broadly on the higher secondary curriculum in India and abroad. To be eligible for admissions, prospective students are also required to obtain a minimum aggregate of 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (subject to a minimum of 60% in each of these three subjects) in their higher secondary examination.

Toppers of higher secondary examinations of each single board are exempted from taking BITSAT test and are considered for direct admission. This exemption helps ensure that BITS-Pilani retain a significant number (about 20-25) of first rank holders from various boards across the country. The toppers are free to choose any discipline offered in all campuses.

BITSAT differs from the conventional written examination as it is an online exam held at more than 20 places all over India. As it is difficult for all the students (nearly 2 lakhs) to appear on a single day, this exam is conducted over a period of nearly 40 days. A candidate can choose the date of exam and the time-slot.There are around 50 sets of papers and necessary precautions are taken to maintain uniformity in the level of difficulty of all these sets.

Acceptance rate in BITS is very low, (Selectivity < 2.08% in 2007)[13] making it the most selective and one of the toughest schools in India to get admission into. The admission is purely on the basis of merit and not through any kind of reservation. This ensures that the student quality of BITS is highly maintained. For more information, see BITS Admission.

Dubai Campus

The admission to Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani - Dubai is based entirely on the marks secured at the 12th standard qualifying exam and no other entrance test. Though BITS Pilani-Dubai campus has been set up to serve the educational requirements of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, admissions to the college are open to all nationalities.[14]

Reputation and rankings

Academics

Central Library, BITS Pilani

The Institute has a three-tier academic structure viz. Integrated First Degree, Higher Degree and Doctoral programmes. Each tier offers many degrees and within a degree a number of courses are offered.[63]

Integrated First Degree

BITS Pilani offers 4 year Integrated First Degree programmes in Bachelor of Engineering (B.E. (Hons.)), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm (Hons.)), Master of Science (M.Sc (Hons.)), Master of Science (M.Sc (Technology)), and Master of Arts (M.A (Hons.)). Various programmes are offered with the degrees and these are classified into 3 groups A, B & C.

These courses are called Integrated First Degree courses because several courses such as Mathematics and Sciences are common to each degree. It should be noted that BITS does not offer intermediate degrees like Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Bachelor of Arts (B.A).

Higher Degree

BITS Pilani offers higher degree programmes like Master of Engineering(M.E.), Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm), Master of Public Health(M.P.H) Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A). These programmes are offered in a variety of disciplines like Chemical Engineering [2], Chemical with Specialization in Petroleum Engineering, Communication Systems,Power Electronics and Drives Electronics and Control, Embedded Systems, Microelectronics, Software Systems, Biotechnology, Manufacturing Systems, Design Engineering, Materials Science & Technology, Transportation engineering, Pharmacy etc. Typically the duration of these programmes is four semesters. The last semester can be spent by opting any one of Dissertation or Practice School. However certain motivated and hardworking students (who opt dissertation stream) can complete the curriculum within 3 semesters by starting the dissertation work right from the first semester and completing it before fourth semester.

MBA Programme Click here:
Management Group at BITS Pilani came into existence in the year 1971. For the first two years it offered a two-year Master in Business Administration (M.B.A) program. In 1973 the institute created four-year Integrated First Degree Master of Management Studies Programme (M.M.S) which was a blend of Engineering and Management. Owing to the industrial demands, in 2006 BITS-Pilani upgraded its four-year year Master of Management Studies (M.M.S) programme to a two-year MBA programme. The students can choose from the two streams of specialization in [3] IT Enabled Services Management and Engineering and Technology Management.

The academic curriculum is highly flexible, which allows students to customize the course according to their interest. A group of qualified core faculty, visiting faculty and practitioners imbue the students with contemporary knowledge base, business analysis and information based decision making skills. Placements take place during the third semester after which the students take up Practice Schools in the last semester for 6 months where they get industrial exposure in the management and business domain. The course structure is designed with the help of experts and approved by the Senate-appointed committee for maintaining the quality of the program. For more information click here.

Doctoral Programmes

The doctoral prograammes at BITS Pilani are designed in a way to prefer the input of students completing higher degree programmes from BITS Pilani. In all the other instances, a case-by-case analysis is done with regards to the higher degree courses completed and the result of the qualifying examination. The structure of the doctoral programme involves thesis and seminar as an integral part, study of foreign language (if necessary). Course work may vary depending upon the input and prior preparation.

Off-Campus Programmes

BITS Pilani offers various off-campus distance learning and collaborative programmes that target the Human Resource Development needs of the industry. The enrollment has grown over the years from 30 in 1979 to over 10000 students in 2005. More than 15000 students were registered for the various off-campus work-integrated learning programmes during 2008-09.[64] Work related learning programmes also accommodate industry professionals to pursue PhD whilst being employed. The various programmes offered are First Level Diploma, B.S. , M.Sc(Tech.) , M.E. , M.S. and M.Phil. A list of the various programmes offered and the respective organizations can be found here

Flexibilities, Dual Degree & Transfer Option

BITS Pilani offers a lot of flexibility in the taking overload of courses and electives outside ones' study area. Dual degrees are very common for Group B programs and in some cases Group A & Group C programs also. The dual degree programmes take 5 years to complete. There is also the option to Transfer from one program to another. Usually applications for dual degree and transfers are accepted at the end of the first year. Transfer to a more sought after degree is reserved for the top students.

Practice School Programme

The Practice School Programme of BITS takes all its students to the industry for seven and half months as an integral component of the academic curriculum. The aim of this programme is to involve students in problem-solving activities of direct interest and relevance to the organizations and orient students to the professional world. The Practice School programme has been widely appreciated. [65]

Practice School-I
(Abbreviated as PS1) This is a summer internship undertaken for nearly two months at the end of second year for all its campus programmes. The number of industrial participants has grown from 14 stations and 244 students in 1975 to 220 stations and 1376 students in 2007. To see the growth of PS1 programme Click here. PS1 is supervised by around 80 faculty members from various campuses of BITS Pilani.[66] This programme is treated as a course worth 5 units. The grade obtained in PS1 is credited to the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the student.

Practice School-II
(Abbreviated as PS2) This is the final year internship undertaken for five and a half months. The number of industrial participants has grown from 1 station and 24 students in 1973 to 135 stations & 1092 students in 2005. To see the growth of PS2 programme Click here. Students are also offered stipend, although the amount varies from company to company. This programme is treated as a course worth 20 units and the grade obtained in PS2 is credited to the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the student.

Student Life

Located away from the urban jungle, the Pilani campus has an atypical culture. Provided all the amenities within the campus itself, students seldom leave the campus.

BITS Pilani student hostel on a foggy day

Elections are held in every hostel for electing the Hostel Representative. Apart from Hostel Representatives, the President and General Secretary are also chosen by electoral process. These Elections are held generally after a month of the start of the academic year. It should be noted that these elections are completely insulated from the external party politics. A nominated body of students called Election Commission is responsible for fair conduct of the elections. Each candidate has to follow the guidelines set by the Election Commission, failing to which the candidature can be canceled. Every student on campus has the right to vote. The Students' Union consists of the President, the General Secretary and Hostel Representatives, along with a Day-Scholar Representative. The actions of the Union are governed by a Constitution, and the Students' Union is responsible for all the non-academic related activities of the students.

The institute maintains a strict stand against ragging. Every year, all students have to undertake ( by signing a form) that they will not indulge in any act of ragging. In June 2007, to ensure the effective implementation of the verdict[67] given by Supreme Court of India, the institute set up three committees namely Institute level Anti-Ragging Committee, Institute level Anti-Ragging Squads and Hostel level Anti-Ragging Squads. [68] The institute has also set up an online ragging-complaint facility where students can complain in case of a ragging situation. [69]

Integrated First Degree

BITS Pilani, Goa offers 3 year Integrated First Degree programmes in Bachelor of Engineering (B.E. (Hons.)), Master of Science (M.Sc (Hons.)), and Master of Science (M.Sc (Technology)). Various programmes are offered with the degrees and these are classified into 3 groups A, B & C.

   * Group A: Chemical, Electrical & Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electronics & Instrumentation.
   * Group B: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics.
   * Group C: Information Systems.

These courses are called Integrated First Degree courses because several courses such as Mathematics and Sciences are common to each degree. It should be noted that BITS does not offer intermediate degrees like Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Bachelor of Arts (B.A).

The Goa campus earlier ran Group P, Group S and Group T, which correspond to Group A, Group B and Group C at Pilani Campus, but now the Group codes are uniform for all campuses of BITS-Pilani. The dual degree scheme & the transfer scheme also applies to this campus. A wide variety of scholarships are offered to students(includes Merit scholarships Merit cum need scholarships etc).

Higher Degree

The institute also offers the higher degree programme in Master of Engineering(M.E.). This programme is currently offered in the following disciplines. The institute plans to expand to other disciplines in the coming years.

Doctoral Programmes

The doctoral prograammes at BITS-Pilani Goa, just as at Pilani, are designed in a way to prefer the input of students completing higher degree programmes from BITS Pilani.

Flexibilities, Dual Degree & Transfer Option

BITS Pilani University offers a lot of flexibility in the taking overload of courses and electives outside ones' study area.
