Wikis Take Manhattan
Wikis Take Manhattan
|
WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City.
LAST YEAR'S EVENT
- Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan/Fall 2008 (a description of the results, and the uploading party)
- Commons:Wikis Take Manhattan (our cool team galleries)
- Streetfilms: Wikis Take Manhattan (our awesome video)
WINNINGS? The first prize winning team members will get Eye-Fi Share cards, which automatically upload photos from your camera to your computer and to sites like Flickr. And there will also be cool prizes for other top scorers.
WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, October 10th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.
WHO All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in team of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a digital camera and a love of the city). Bring a friend (or two)!
REGISTER The proper place to register your team is here. It's also perfectly possible to register on the day of when you get there, but it will be slightly easier for us if you register beforehand.
WHERE Participants can begin the hunt from either of two locations: one at Columbia University (at the sundial on college walk) and one at The Open Planning Project's fantastic new event space nestled between Chinatown and SoHo. Everyone will end at The Open Planning Project:
- 148 Lafayette Street
- between Grand & Howard Streets
FOR UPDATES

Yale gallery pics
Hi Sage - Now that I have a more complete index at List of works by Thomas Eakins, I just went back and took another look at the Yale Gallery listing. If I could impose on you one more time, could you do the following for me?
- [1] - is the "Portrait of Rear-Admiral George W. Melville" G408 or G420? If it's G408, and the Yale pic is in color, could you replace it?
- [2] - Archbishop James Frederick Wood. If it's color and the same as File:James Wood G107.jpg, please upload it
- File:Archbishop James Frederick Wood, by Thomas Eakins.jpg - it's a color version of the one listed as Study, #108.
- [3] - If "study for the Timer is different from File:Eakins - the Timer.jpg, could you upload it. [4] Also lists "Timer". Please do the same with that.
- File:Between Rounds Study for the Timer, by Thomas Eakins.jpg - this one is the same, but higher quality
- File:Timer, by Thomas Eakins.jpg - this one is different
- [5] - There are two listings for "Between Rounds". If either of these happens to be a colorized version of File:Sketch for Between Rounds G313.png or File:Landscape sketch G313.jpg, please upload it.
- They are both of the final painting.
- [6] - There are two entries for "Masked Woman Seated". If either of these are not G1, please upload it.
- File:Masked nude woman, seated, by Thomas Eakins.jpg - it's the same as G1, but it's a better reproduction than the current one
- [7] - Please upload "Sketch for 'In Washington'" if it's not the same as G118
- It's the same, but an inferior reproduction.
- [8] Lists two sketches for Homespun. I think one of these is G147. If either of them look like not-quite-finished versions of File:Eakins, Homespun 1881.jpg, please upload it.
- File:Sketches for 'Home-Spun' (verso), Top of painting at right, by Thomas Eakins.jpg
- File:Sketches for 'Home-Spun' (recto), by Thomas Eakins.jpg - looks like one is verso and one is recto for G147
- [9] - Please upload "Thomas B. Harned"
- [10] Please upload Water Nymph and Bittern if it's not a sculpture.
- It's a sculpture.

Signpost article: Sanger marginalized
Greetings Ragesoss, I was thinking of covering this story of Larry Sanger speaking about Jimbo marginalizing Sanger's place in the history of WP, as posted in the Signpost Tip Room. Is it worth a full article, you think, or just a blurb on "In the News"? Thanks - Draeco (talk) 04:31, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Dispatch for 2 November edition of The Signpost?
Dear Rageross, SandyGeorgia suggested I contact you directly here, to ask whether it's too late to schedule an interview with the main author of a recently promoted FAC Inner German border, which we hope to have featured on the Main Page for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall on 9 November. The piece has not yet been started, but could be ready by the 03:00 UTC Monday deadline, I think. Tony (talk) 14:57, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
- It will make a great Dispatch (particularly with Tony on board). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:48, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
- Of course. That sounds great.--ragesoss (talk) 17:18, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
- Sage, is it possible to use an image in the Dispatch article? I know this has been done occasionally in previous years, but I'm unsure whether there's a policy not to have images. We have a good one taken by the subject of the article (ChrisO) that relates to an interesting narrative. Tony (talk) 09:35, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
- Of course. That sounds great.--ragesoss (talk) 17:18, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
- Copied from my talk: Tony, per WP:FCDW, could you put the Dispatch at WP:FCDW/November 2, 2009? I'm not aware of any reason that you can't include images, but I will ask Ragesoss. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 12:15, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
- PS, Ragesoss, another note while I'm here :) I've gotten multiple requests from editors wanting to interview me for The Signpost; one of those had already set up an interview that had some "interesting" wording. In case it comes up again, I'll politely decline being interviewed by editors who don't know well my entire history on Wiki-- my work at FAC, FAR, articlehistory, Unreviewed FAs, medical articles, the Dispatches (of which I was most proud) etc.-- editors like Tony, Marskell, Karanacs and several others. This might make it easier for you to answer those queries when they appear on your page :) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:04, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
- Images are fine. I'll try to screen any future interview requests that come through me.--ragesoss (talk) 14:34, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Thoughts?
Sage, I'm thinking of something like a biweekly report where I ask for comments from people who have been active in policy page discussions. The current submission came out well I think for people who are really into this stuff, although it's a bit "dry"; see Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2009-11-02/Discussion_report#Policy report. Regardless of the quality (or lack thereof) of the summary, if the existence of the column encourages the kind of thoughtful responses at Wikipedia_talk:SOCK#Interview for Signpost, then I think the column is a net positive. I don't have any strong feelings what the summary should look like; my inclination is generally to just try to report what people are saying with editorial judgment but not a lot of embellishment, but if you'd like to tweak it, please feel free. (Watching) - Dank (push to talk) 20:02, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
- Dank, thanks for taking this on; it definitely seems worthwhile to me, and your plan for it seems a good one. One related idea that I've been thinking about is policy histories, which would sort of summarize how a specific policy developed over time and why: when was this bit added, and in response to what? etc. But I'm not sure if that would be right for the Signpost; it'd be more of a useful resource to be included on each policy page, so that our weird policies can start to make a little more sense to the people who didn't write them.--ragesoss (talk) 22:07, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I think it would be helpful if the top of every policy talk page gave some links to recent conversations that shaped the page, if the goal is to help new readers get up to speed. But it would be a good idea to keep the links minimal, otherwise it might devolve into arguments about the arguments ... who should get credit, etc. If someone wants to know what was behind a certain change, those questions get asked and answered all the time on policy talk pages. - Dank (push to talk) 23:41, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
- Oh and ... thanks, and feel free to edit or comment on the policy reports any time. I think I'll experiment with doing a little bit every week so we can gauge reader reaction. - Dank (push to talk) 23:42, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

You're invited!
New York City Meetup |
In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia at the Library and Wikipedia Loves Landmarks, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, for example particular problems posed by Wikipedia articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements (see the September meeting's minutes).
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

Wiktionary lookup tool
WiktLookup now supports retrieving more than one defintion. See n:Wikinews:Javascript#Configuration_options. Cheers. Bawolff (talk) 01:47, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- I want to try out the new parameters for configuring the Wiktionary gadget on my blog, but I don't know where add the configuration code to make it work.--ragesoss (talk) 02:32, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry the instructions are unclear. I was somewhat in a rush when writing them. Basically, add the following to the html of your blog somewhere:
<script type='text/javascript'> if (!window.wiktLookup) wiktLookup = {}; wiktLookup.count = 3; </script>
(Replacing the 3 with whatever you want the max number of definitions to be displayed. The script obviously won't display more defintions than exist, so if you want as many as possible put count to 9000 or something really big. It should be noted that it will still only display definitions for only a single language (aka it will not display what the word means if it is an english word, and what the word means if its a french word). Cheers. Bawolff (talk) 21:07, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- In the near future, I'll make the size of the box configurable as an option as well, to hopefully address that issue. Bawolff (talk) 06:52, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

WiktLookup configurable width and height
It took a little longer than anticipated (I've been quite busy recently), but wiktLookup now supports configurable width and height. Adding something like:

ISS FAC4.
Hello there! As an editor who has posted a comment in one of the recent Peer Reviews, GANs or FACs of International Space Station, or who has contributed to the article recently, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind commenting in the current Featured Article Candidacy with any suggestions you have for article improvements (and being bold and making those changes), whether or not you feel any issues you have previously raised have been dealt with, and, ultimately, if you believe the article meets the Featured Article guidelines. This is the fourth FAC for this article, and it'd be great to have it pass. Many thanks in advance, Colds7ream (talk) 16:41, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
