Some material stuff

Hey Scientist, I happened to have created UNK proton accelerator. Is it of any interest to you? It is a rather sad stub and the contents which need to be there are entirely too technical for me. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 17:15, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good. I have little personal experience with proton accelerators, and little interest in the topic (so much to write about), but as it is in Russia, I could help sorting out sources if you want to expand the article. Materialscientist (talk) 01:33, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Noooo--I just want YOU to write it and ME take the DYK credit! Seriously, sources would be helpful; they are scant, which I find somewhat surprising. I did what I could with what Google Books and News delivered with various search terms, but it was disappointing. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 02:35, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Samangan

Will you please help merging this article Samangan with Aybak, Samangan? I tried but get a directive that I should seek help of Administrator to make the merge move. I am planning to do some Afghanistan articles since I have been to most of its provinces. Thanks.-- N.V.V. Char Talk . 01:26, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think you were asked to seek admin. help so that an admin would merge the history of those articles. I do not see any need for that (i.e. article moves) - please go ahead, develop one of the articles which you find more appropriate, and change another one into a redirect. Making Peace

I don't even see a real fight going on. We have basically been educating each other about our opinions. I don't think either of us is really very ruffled about the whole issue.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:08, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question on this edit

I have received this question from another editor wondering if this is vandalism as neither of us have a huge knowledge on the topic and I am needing some advice. Is it vandalism? Please feel free to reply to the current discussion on my talk page. The edit--iGeMiNix/What's up?/My Stuff 22:11, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That edit was definitely vandalism. Materialscientist (talk) 22:13, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your ban stick is needed

I may be stepping on your toes, after scanning my watchlist I re-sprot'ed the subject article for 3 weeks. Restore-NPOV-remove-propaganda dude has come across my radar before, different IP, same edits. Further research turns up that you already made a block this go-round - so different route, same destination I guess... Franamax (talk) 05:28, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MS! Would it be possible to do a rangeblock on the above guy? He seems to be vandalizing under the following:

User:136.167.186.138

User:136.167.186.112

User:136.167.253.28

S/he has also been using other IPs too, but I have lost track of them. So, a rangeblock might shut him/her down. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 06:14, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MS. I've recently re-blocked this IP with which, according to their user talk, you've had previous experience. I was approaced regarding blocking a registered user that has been associated with that IP and wanted to let you know about the recent actions. My first reaction was not to block the registered user as I had no direct cause to do so. If you want to examine the current circumstances and take a different course, I would certainly understand. Let me know if you need any clarification. See ya' round Tiderolls 05:02, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Blanking block notices

Hi, Materialscientist. A user you recently blocked has blanked his user page, as is his/her custom. I see from WP:BLANKING that we're not allowed to delete "declined unblock requests, ban, validly-imposed edit restrictions", but (I'm surprised to see) block notices aren't listed. I thought it might fall under "validly-imposed edit restrictions", but when I follow the link to WP:RESTRICT, it seems to be talking only about bans, topic bans, special civility rules for the user, etc. So are block notices deleteable during the block? Does WP:BLANKING need changing? Or am I just missing something (probably very obvious)? And what of Esmerelda? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 14:04, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I leave it to people writing policies. As far as I am concerned, the block message only tells the user that they are blocked and how to request an unblock - I see blocks in logs, and if the user doesn't want to be unblocked - fine. Materialscientist (talk) 00:24, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 04:23, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Translation?

Hi Materialscientist. Is there any chance you could translate the following paragraph? If you could, that would be much appreciated.

Best, NW (Talk) 03:14, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In 1718, the Vseshuteyshy [rare slang, meaning something like "King of all jesters"] patriarch went into another world. His children, while fighting for inheritance with the stepmother, were constantly talking about the insanity of their old father "living in an infant state" and reproached Stremouhova [the stepmother] that she "exhausted him with carnal lust". The Tsar wrote about Nikita Moiseevich as "Our Father and prayer [person who prays] Zotov, King of all jesters Anikita [mocking var. of Nikita], having departed from our world, left our crazy gathering headless". -* Berdnikov, Lev (2007). "Vseshuteyshy Patriarch: Essay from the series 'The phenomenon of jestership in the Russian culture of the 18th century'" (in Russian). New Journal (249). http://magazines.russ.ru/nj/2007/249/be17.html. Retrieved 23 July 2009.

Notes: there is a typo in the Russian page: "их" should be "из" (and is actually absent, and was likely added by someone); we've got to copy that typo, but it makes no sense in translation; "собор" would usually mean "cathedral", but in those times, the meaning of "meeting, gathering" was equally common. Clarification

Could you just clarify this edit summary for me? I'm just not sure what you're trying to say and am confused. Thanks! Yves (talk) 04:44, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I know the rule about the "pronounced boost", but the page views were declining until the day of feature on the main page. Yves (talk) 04:48, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)The discussion of this issue is to be found here. Whereas the math formula there is naive, the essence is like that: some articles get xxx,000 views per day no matter what we do on WP, simply because something happened in the world; such articles do not qualify as DYK achievements. It is not always easy to say which views originated from the fact that the DYK hook was on the main page, but the rough guide is the number of views on and around the DYK hours. In this case, there were more views on 29-30 Sep. than on DYK day (28 Sep.), thus it is almost certain that main page featuring didn't matter (enough for claiming 11k views). Materialscientist (talk) 04:56, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oohh okay. I thought at first the histogram for page views would climb exponentially, and taper or keep growing, but I guess it makes more sense that the peak would be the day of, and, yes, the histogram here is negatively skewed. Thanks! Yves (talk) 05:05, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is an example of "clean" DYK stats (i.e. otherwise obscure event promoted via the WP main page). Materialscientist (talk) 05:08, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. No skewness. Yves (talk) 05:22, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question about commons

Hi Materialscientist,

I have a question, and I'm hoping that maybe you can steer me in the right direction. A user has requested thet I transfer an illustration to commons. I have no idea how to do that. Do you know where I can find such information? Zaereth (talk) 18:58, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are some subtleties (not every image should be transferred, as then both images might get deleted, here and on commons; and there are several ways to transfer), thus it is easier for me to provide this link or to transfer myself :) Materialscientist (talk) 01:08, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link. If you'd like to transfer it yourself I would be grateful, since my schedule is rather full right now. The image is this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pursuit_curves_in_air_combat.jpg . If not, I'll study the link you gave me when I return on Monday. Thanks again, and have a nice weekend. Zaereth (talk) 01:17, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Halloween DYK sets

For this do we go with 4 sets and stay within UTC Halloween time or add a 5th set to cover that the fact early 1 Nov UTC time is still big time Halloween night in US and Canada? RlevseTalk 01:43, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For 1 April it is 24 hrs strict, for others - not really. I think it depends on the number of hooks - if there are too many, and verified, they would be better viewed around Halloween. Materialscientist (talk) 01:49, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There are 37 right now--we'll probably get more, that's 7.4 for 5 sets. I've started putting them together. I'll make a 5th set. Should we bring this up at WT:DYK?RlevseTalk 01:52, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, it is up to you (set composer - i.e. post if questions/problems, just do it if clear). I would usually not feature "same" hooks, but dilute them, i.e. there are two options: put 4x9+1 (or 4x8+5) or 5x7.4 - it depends on the variedness of the hooks. Materialscientist (talk) 01:59, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going for 5 sets for now. RlevseTalk 02:02, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In general, this is preferred, as it gives more hook combinations, for diversity. Materialscientist (talk) 02:05, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done for now. I'd be honored if you'd be the first to review them and fix them and/or let me know what you think. Links are here: Wikipedia:Did_you_know/Halloween_2010#Halloween_DYK_Hooks_-_Prep_Sets. P1 and P3 have 8 hooks. The other 3 have 7 right now. That gives us room for the ones that will undoubtedly come in during the next week. The set's number (1-5) is the order I think it best they go live in.RlevseTalk 10:51, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll go slowly as I already see (and fixing) problems with some articles (authors' fault). Materialscientist (talk) 11:03, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've tweaked a couple of hooks and will go offline soon. I would post a message at WT:DYK seeking for more eyes - such events don't happen often. The refs (core ref. 1, and ref. 2 is actually just a cite from ref. 1) of Brown Lady of Raynham Hall in P1 are weak. Sandra Ramdhanie is a marginal article (how nobody AFDed it yet?). Materialscientist (talk) 12:32, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, many thanks.RlevseTalk 12:34, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MS! As you know from our frequent interactions, I do a lot of vandal fighting. Consequently, I have been finding it increasingly difficult to parse my content creation edits from my RCP edits and so was wanting to have them be separated out. To that end, I recently had a new account created via ACC (please see this discussion on my talk page). I created the account, User:SpikeTorontoRCP, strictly to use for recent changes patrol (hence, the RCP at the end). However, in order to give effect to this desire, I need one more element in addition to the RCP account: the same user rights. Thus, I was wondering if you could provide my RCP account the same user rights that my regular account has. These are: reviewer and rollback. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 04:31, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done, with a request: do add a template to your user page that you operate SpikeTorontoRCP. For example
This user has an alternative account named SpikeTorontoRCP.
Materialscientist (talk) 04:44, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Thanks also for the template. I was looking for that one and could not remember what it was called or where else I had seen it. I shall add it to the top of my user page ASAP. Should I also add it to the top of my talk page? Or, does it go on the user page only? Thanks again! — SpikeToronto 05:26, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Userpage will do - talk is for talking :) Materialscientist (talk) 05:31, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I thought so too. But, I have seen some people put it on their talk page. Perhaps they are editors who redirect their user page to their talk page. Who knows? Thanks again! — SpikeToronto 05:48, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I withdrew the nomination for DYK for Folkman's theorem (19 October). I trust that you should withdraw (or rephrase) your objection to the DYK nomination for Jon Folkman (18 October) Editor David Eppstein wrote several related articles, the latest being Folkman's theorem (on the 19th). I nominated the latter in good faith, writing a notice that I had nominated Jon Folkman the previous day. However, I failed to add a similar note to the Jon Folkman DYK. I am sorry if this gave the appearance of duplicate nomination. Sincerely, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 11:38, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
