What's with Andy? is a Canadian animated series that debuted on September 22, 2001 and ended on March 4, 2007. It was originally an interactive Flash movie with completely different voice actors and a promotion for Fox Kids. However, it ended up airing on Teletoon. The series were produced by CineGroupe. It was based on a series of books by Andy Griffiths

The protagonist of the series is Andy Larkin, a mischievous teen and the (self-proclaimed) "world's greatest prankster". The show follows him as he tries to perform incredibly well-thought-out and elaborate practical jokes (a.k.a. pranks) on people. He lives in the fictional town of East Gackle, Alberta (2nd and 3rd seasons only). He constantly breaks the fourth wall when the screen freezes.

Andy's best friend, Danny Pickett, helps him out with almost every prank. He is enemies with his sister, Jen Larkin, and the bullies Peter Lik and Andrew Leech. Andy has a crush on a girl named Lori Mackney (in the books Lisa Mackney) and usually tries to impress her.

This entire show is based on Andy Griffiths' children's series of Just books, although the majority of episodes are not based on the books. In fact, in place of Just Tricking's Terrible Christmas and a Crappy New Year, there is an entirely new Christmas special, most likely because the word "crap" is generally frowned upon by children's networks, despite a season of Hey Arnold! in which it was allowed for Helga Pataki to use the word often. Other changes include Andy's last name, which was originally that of his creator, and other minor name changes that were in essence pointless.

The setting of the first season of What's with Andy was in the USA. In the second and third seasons, they all have been relocated to Canada. It is very evident in the episode "Rhyme Time" that they lived in the USA because of the American history that Andy recited and that the second language they were taught was Spanish rather than French which is taught as a second language in Canada. Also, in "Gnome for the Holidays", a building can be seen saying, US Post Office.

The show ran every morning on ABC Family at 8:00 a.m. E.T. from September 2001 until April 2002. It was also seen at 3:30 p.m. Eastern/2:30 p.m. C.T. on Toon Disney for a short time in early 2005. It aired on Teletoon from September 2001 until September 2008.

Season 1 was produced in association with Saban International and aired on Fox Kids Europe. As Saban and Fox Kids were later bought by The Walt Disney Company, and Saban's animation studio in France was split off as a separate company (SIP Animation), season 2 was co-produced in 2003 with SIP Animation and Fox Kids France. Disney was also involved in season 3's production in 2006, which was this time only noted by a message "A CineGroupe production in association with Super RTL" at the end of the closing credits. Fox Kids Europe's successor channel, Jetix, continued to air the show, including season 3. Super RTL only aired season 3. Later in 2009 Jetix channel was replaced by Disney Channel and the series of What's with Andy? stopped.

Characters

  • Andrew "Andy" Larkin

The main character of the show and who loves to prank people. His best friend is Danny and he has a crush on Lori. He is smart, and is persistent at his pranks. Despite the fact that Andy ends up in some humiliating moments, he continues his persistent goal of becoming the "world's greatest prankster!"

  • Daniel "Danny" Tadeus Pickett

The best friend and Andy's right hand man, helping him out with countless pranks. His last name has always been Pickett, even since the book series. The name "Danny Pickett" is derived from Jim Kjelgaard's Big Red[citation needed]. He is somewhat nervous of Andy's pranks, and he keeps Andy from going "over the top." In episode 301, he pretended to be the prankster to impress a girl named Rachael, who had a love for pranks.

  • Lauren "Lori" Mackney

Andy's crush but she is dismayed by his childishness due to his pranking. She has a crush on Andy very much and hates Jen because Lori thinks Jen cruelly abuses Andy. She wears a green tank top, blue skirt and sandals. She is known as Lisa in the books. She writes for the school newspaper and has to deal with Andy and Jervis constantly fighting over her. She is sweet, givving, and doesn't like to see anyone sad or left out.

The Larkin family

  • Jennifer "Jen" Larkin: Andy's older sister who blames her younger brother Andy for everything bad. She is a chearleader, and like a stereotypical teenage girl, is obsessed with how she looks and going out with boys. Her best friend is Teri.
* Freida Larkin: Andy and Jen's Mother and Al's wife. She often is seen getting angry with Andy over his pranks, and is a stereotypical mother. She thinks that Andy's pranking is a type of phase, and that deep inside, Andy has a good heart, and potential to be a normal citizen.
  • Alfred "Al" Larkin: Andy and Jen's Father and Freida's husband. There are hints given throughout the series that he is a former prankster. In episode 209, Ms. Murphy reveals that she cured him, and in the same episode, at the mention of her name, Al seemed a bit nervous about her. He cares about his son, and may still have a secret love for pranks. * Spank Larkin: Andy's fat and lazy dog. Spank seems to yawn constantly, especially after walking a little. He is scared of doing stunts, as seen in episode 316.

Minor characters

  • Teri: Jen's best friend. She is a cheerleader like Jen, and has the hots for a boy named Shelden (episode 304)
  • Jervis Coltrane: A French stereotypical snob who has a crush on Lori Mackney. He is Andy's rival in many episodes, and in 314, was paired up with him for a project on taking care of babies. He is somewhat of a scaredy cat, sometimes running and or screaming at minor things. At times, he can be an arrogant person.
  • Peter Lik: Peter and Andrew are Andy's and Danny's nemeses. They are usually referred to "Lik and Leech".
  • Andrew Leech: Peter and Andrew are Andy's and Danny's nemeses. They are usually referred to "Lik and Leech".

Both are extremely dumb, and are often arguing amongst themselves.

  • Craig Bennett: Jen's crush and one of the best athletes of East Gackle. He is often seen hanging around, and is constantly hounded by girls. In an episode(111), he runs for school president on Andy's suggestion, but Andy decides to run against him.
  • Martin Bonwick: He is a stereotypically nervous nerd who always gets bullied. According to episode 304, he suffers from sleepwalking in the form of dancing. In an episode, Andy switched tapes for Martin and got him to speak Spanish when he had to do a speech.
  • Mr.Bonwick: Mr.Bonwick works at the Toilet paper factory.
  • Ms.Bonwick: Mr.Bonwick's wife.
  • Victor "Vic" Muskowitz (Mush): The pizza delivery man of East Gackle who is a good friend of Andy and Danny and he sometimes helps them with pranks. He often refers to Andy as "Dude!", and is smart. He is seen looking at squirrels in episode 309, and has weird friends.
  • Steve Rowgee Jr.: A dumb police officer who is the incompetent son of Steve Rowgee Sr.
  • Steve Rowgee Sr.: A police officer who is an old man, who always commands Steve Rowgee Jr. (his son) and is nicknamed the Iron Fisted Maniac.
  • Principal Persy DeRosa: He is the bad-tempered principal of the school in East Gackle who is obsessed with punishing Andy and Danny. The only reason he is like this is because he secretly has the two's best interests at heart, and wants them to be normal, though he doesn't show it.
  • Mr. Hutchins: One of the many teachers at East Gackle school, Andy likes to prank him more than the other teachers. He is often seen giving speeches in a droning monotone voice. In 304, Jen tricked him into saying "Ms. Wibbles is hot!", as Ms. Wibbles entered the room, causing his ultimate humiliation.
  • Mayor Henry K. Roth: The mayor of East Gackle.
  • Mayor Simms: Mayor of West Gackle and Mayor Henry K. Roth's rival.
  • Mr Leech: Andrew Leech's Dad.
  • Ms Leech: Andrew Leech's Mom.
  • Clyde: The janitor of the school.
  • Bryan: Andy's pranking rival and they battle for the best pranking and for Lori, in episode 216.
  • Hazel Strinner: She has a crush on Andy and Lori's protecting friend.
  • Louella Berman: Freida's best friend.
  • Mrs. Wibbles: Principal DeRosa's secretary. She puts principal DeRosa in quarantine in episode 323.
  • Norman Larkin: Andy's grandfather who is also a prankster, implying that the male side of the Larkin family comes from a long line of pranksters, with the exception of Al Larkin (.Andy's father), though hints have been given that he too is a prankster even greater than his son or father.
