Indian Institute of Management Indore is a state funded management institute in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Instituted in 1998, IIM Indore is the sixth addition to the IIM family. IIM Lucknow awards only diplomas, and not degrees.[4]

History

IIM Indore which came into existence in 1998, was established as the sixth Indian Institute of Management after IIM Calcutta (1961), IIM Ahmedabad (1963), IIM Bangalore (1972), IIM Lucknow (1984) and IIM Kozhikode (1996). The institute was the youngest among IIMs till 2008, when IIM Shillong was instituted.

The old temporary campus was located in Rajendranagar in Indore till 2002, when the institute moved to its current state of the art campus situated at Rau on the Rau-Pithampur road close to the Pithampur Special Economic Zone.

Admissions

The admissions to IIM Indore PGP take place through the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the IIMs and for the EPGP through the Graduate Management Admission Test(GMAT) conducted by Graduate Management Admission Council, USA. The CAT is a competitive test conducted for admission to the IIMs and is considered one of the most competitive exams in the world, with a success rate of less than one in a hundred. Based on the performance in CAT, each institute independently shortlists prospective candidates and conducts group discussions and personal interviews. The number of aspirants taking the test has been increasing every year, with more than 270,000 sitting for CAT-2008 to compete for around 1600 seats in the IIMs. The GMAT similarly is the test used by the leading schools in the world such as Harvard, Stanford and Wharton for its admissions. More than 267,000 took the GMAT in 2010 and the numbers of Indians taking the test stood at 21,781 1. The GMAT helps IIM Indore select candidates for the 42 seats in the One Year Full Time MBA (EPGP). Coupled with an average GMAT score of around 700 at IIM Indore which is comparable to that required by the Top 10 schools in the world, it makes admission to the One Year MBA programme one of the toughest across the globe.

Campus

The foundation stone of the new campus was laid by Mukesh Ambani. The sprawling 193-acre (0.78 km2) campus is amongst the biggest for management institutes in the country. A large part of the campus still remains unused as the institute is relatively young. Expansion plans include building more hostels to accommodate the growing number of post graduate and executive students, a state of the art sports complex and residential quarters for doctoral students.

Hostels

The PGP is a full-time residential programme. The new campus started with 4 hostels each housing 60 students. As the intake has gradually increased, today, there are 9 hostels with 2 more close to completion. Rooms in all the hostels have direct computer connectivity to the main LAN that provides an 8 Mbit/s internet connectivity. For the One Year Full Time MBA - the EPGP, a separate air conditioned hostel has been set up that offers super-luxury accommodation and can house almost 200 students - future proof for the substantial increase in intake planned for the One Year Full Time EPGP. In addition to these, IIM Indore also has a Management Development Centre (MDC) which houses the MDP participants. Dedicated mess facilities and round the clock canteen facilities are available in between the hostels. The common rooms at the Hostels have a 52" LCD TV with satellite cable, in addition to the facilities for the indoor games. It is also the scene of action for get-togethers, parties and informal discussions.

Library

IIM Indore Library

The IIMI Library holds knowledge resources predominantly related to management and allied subjects. The entire Library collection including the CD-ROM databases and the online databases are made available through Institute’s network. Users can access the online databases, video library and also find out the real-time availability of library materials from their own computer terminals. The Library offers a range of information services set to the highest professional standards.

The Library resource includes over 15000 books in the area of Management and related subjects, 425 journals (350 Foreign and 75 Indian) specific to the academic and research needs of the academic community and over 1000 selective e-journals available in full-text.[5]

The Symbol consists of a circle in four segments. The concept is visual and not dependent on letters of the alphabet. Instead, three segments, in blue, form three quarters of a circle, while three other elements move out of the space, which would have been occupied by the fourth segment. The circular form in the center suggests the institution, while the incoming white space shapes the three moving elements. These elements indicate a freedom from all constraints, and form a separate entity, devoted to a specific purpose, in this case, management. These pieces have been put together because management is multi-dimensional and has to move together to form an organic whole.

The slogan Siddhi Moolam Prabandhanam . (Siddhi = Achievement; Moolam = Root; Prabandhanam = Management ... The Root of All Achievement is Management) appears below the symbol, further clarifying the meaning.

Programmes

The Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIM Indore) offers a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) which is equivalent to an MBA, Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), Management Development Programme (MDP) ,Executive Post-Graduate Programme (EPGP) and Post-Graduate Certificate Program in Management [2]. There are options to specialise in various fields such as Finance, Operations, Marketing, Systems etc. The students are given flexibility to choose the specialisation of their choice. (similar to what happens in all the other IIMs).

The Programs offered by the institute are as follows:

1. The Post Graduate Programme (PGP) , the flagship programme of the institute, is a 2 year full time residential programme for graduate students. The student profile is extremely varied with educational backgrounds such as IITs, Medicine, Engineering, Humanities, Media, etc. The continuous evaluation system comprises surprise quizzes, term projects, case analyses, assignments, and mid-term and end-term examinations. On its successful completion, the participant is awarded a "Post Graduate Diploma in Management".

2. Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is a 4–5 years Doctoral Programme, designed to provide breadth and depth of knowledge to doctoral participants in management [3]. The primary objective of the programme is to create competencies in theoretical and practical academia and research of management. The programme participants generally opt for careers in teaching, training, research, and consulting;it is a full time four year residential course. The institute has also commenced from 2011 its new programme FPM(industry) for working executives to integrate theory and practice;the programme is unique as it is flexible in accommodating their work -engagement without sacrificing the rigour of the course and the normal course duration would be three years.

3. One Year Full Time Executive Post-Graduate Programme (EPGP) is the second flagship programme at IIM Indore. The One Year Full-time MBA is designed for executives and entrepreneurs with a minimum of 5 yrs of industry experience. On successful completion of the programme the participants are awarded the “Post Graduate Diploma in Management for Executives”. The programme is structured in a unique modular design which combined with innovative assignments, role-plays, team projects and an international 6 week module at the University of Pittsburgh, USA aims to enable the participants to deliver superior performance at their workplace. The average work experience of participants is approximately 9 years and the average GMAT score is around 700 which is comparable to that of the top schools in the world. The programme is modeled on the flagship MBA at INSEAD, Oxford, Cambridge, IMD, HEC Paris (One Year Full Time) and aims to deliver the learning of a full time MBA in a condensed one year to help candidates get back into the workforce faster. The programme does not condense course content to a great degree vis.a.vis the two year PGP, but does save on internship period and some subjects considered redundant for a batch rich with work experience. The curriculum of EPGP of IIM Indore is unique on two counts - (i) International Immersion on a Cohort Basis where all the students visit a renowned US B-School for a term to obtain Occidental Management Philosophy from the mouth of the Western Academicians & (ii) A discourse on the Perspectives in Oriental Philosophy - taught by Monks from Ramkrishna Mission and other Socio-Religious Bodies. Therefore the Programme aims at providing the students a Holistic Perspective in Management.

4. Management Development Programme (MDP) is targeted at developing the managerial skills of the people from various sector of the industry. The duration of each course ranges from a week to a fortnight. They are organised throughout the year.

5. Post-Graduate Certificate Program in Management. [4] This 1-year part time program equips young managers with the concepts, principles and applications of modern-day management practices. It provides essential knowledge and skills in all functional areas and applications through case-studies. The program is designed for executives seeking foundational inputs prior to career growth. Candidates with 3 years’ work experience preferred for the program and the classes are organised by NIIT Imperia

Foreign Student Exchange Program

The Student Exchange Programme ensures that the students are exposed to the latest trends in management across the best business schools in the world. Apart from providing a chance for students to interact and really be a part of some of the world's top universities for a term, the programme also enables the rest of the batch here to benefit from the foreign students who travel here in their place. The Student Exchange Programme Committee (see below under Student Activities) handles the logistics of the programme. The institute had its first student exchange of six students with Ecole de Management de Lyon (EM Lyon), a premier business school based in Lyon, France, in 2005. The exchange program has advanced rapidly and the institute currently has exchange programs with two more business schools in France, two in Germany, two in USA one in China, one in Canada and one in New Zealand, with several others on the anvil.
