Greater Noida (Hindi: ग्रेटर नोएडा, Urdu: بڑا نویڈا, transliteration: Baṛa Nōēḍā) is located in the Gautam Budh Nagar district of north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It comes under the purview of National Capital Region (NCR) of India. It is located at about 40 kilometres (25 mi) south-east of New Delhi, 20 kilometres (12 mi) south-east of Noida, one of the largest industrial townships of Asia and 437 kilometres (272 mi) north-west of Lucknow, the state capital.

The development of Greater Noida is managed by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA).[1] Greater Noida is a fast growing region, on a trajectory to be one of the largest industrial and education hubs of India. Reason behind all the progress the city has witnessed is, Greater Noida has got one of the best infrastructure and excellent road network in India besides Chandigarh and Bangalore. 25 percent area of the city is under the Green cover which makes this city more viable and fresh especially in the monsoon season. In monsoon, this city looks almost rejuvenated. The city is very well connected with Agra by 6 lane Yamuna Expressway. The construction of the 5th Night Safari in the world which will showcase the wildlife in night, is under progress. The other 4 night safaris are in China, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Recently the annual Indian Grand Prix was held in Greater Noida which has put up this city on the world map.

History

A beautiful view of Greater Noida

In the early 1980s the Government of India realized that the rapid rate at which Delhi was expanding would result in chaos. So they planned to develop residential and industrial areas around the capital to reduce the burden of rapid development on the capital. The two areas which were developed were Gurgaon (across the border with Haryana) and Noida (across the border with Uttar Pradesh).

Shaheed Bismil Park in Greater Noida

As a planned expansion, Noida's infrastructure and utilities was carefully laid out. However, the 90s saw huge growth in the Indian economy, and migration to cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai exceeded planning estimates. Noida was developed to be able to accommodate population growth for 20–25 years. But, with the massive influx to Delhi, it was overloaded in just 15 years.

The Government of Uttar Pradesh then decided to incorporate the city of Greater Noida, as an extension to Noida, but with better planning incorporating the lessons learned from the Noida development. The idea was to create a world class city. The city was planned to be situated approximately 25 km from Noida. By including a railway station and an international airport, Greater Noida is intended to develop as an independent city. Initially, the city developed extremely rapidly but due to political and economic instability, the development slowed down appreciably. However, it has started to grow again, though at a more moderate pace.

Greater Noida is a planned township. Roads are wide with service lanes for every major road. The sectors are named by letters of the Greek alphabet. All cabling and utilities are run underground. Alpha, Beta and Gamma are the oldest sectors of this city. The present GNIDA office is situated in Gamma II sector just opposite to the historical village Rampur Jagir/Jahangir where the great revolutionary Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil lived for some time in the year 1919 when he was hidden underground after Mainpuri conspiracy. A park has also been named after him by the U.P. Government.

Demographics

As per provisional data of 2011 census, Greater Noida had a population of 107,676, out of which males were 58,662 and females were 49,014. The literacy rate was 86.54 per cent.[2]

The demographics of Greater Noida, mainly consists of students, corporates and labour class worker. Students are mainly temporary residents who come here from other parts of India and abroad for higher studies. This is due to large number of colleges in this region.

A majority of the original population of Greater Noida is a mixture of people from all over India but Gurjar community is more prominent than any other community because they are the native people belonging to the local farmers and herders. Due to the large amount of compensation which they received from the U.P. government for industrial development here, the gurjars suddenly gained wealth.

The Gurjars are very famous in this region for their generosity, especially Bhati, Khari & Nagar Gotra of Gurjars in Greater Noida. This community have strong hold in the region, in different fields particularly in politics and business etc.
