(1991 film)

Walang Hanggan (English: Eternal) is a Philippine traditional television drama aired by ABS-CBN and worldwide on The Filipino Channel featuring an ensemble cast.[1][2] The series is loosely based on the 1991 Gomez-Zulueta film Hihintayin Kita Sa Langit,[3] a film based on the Emily Brontë novel, Wuthering Heights as well as Revenge.

Plot summary

Book 1

The story begins in the region in Olivarez, where it exploits the love triangle between the first two generations between Virginia Cruz (Susan Roces) the self-sacrificing sister of Margaret C. Montenegro (Helen Gamboa) who also has jealousy in her heart for her sister due to her relationship with Joseph (Eddie Gutierrez) in their younger age Virginia also sacrificed her love and education which grew hard for her sister Margaret to understand their condition but many have witnessed a blossoming love between Marco (Richard Gomez) the son and heir of Margaret's business venture and also is to be engaged with Jane Bonefacio (Rita Avila) but Marco falls for a field workers daughter Emily Cardenas (Dawn Zulueta) but Marco and Emily's relationship is strained due to Margaret unaccepting her because of her low-class standards but a sequence of events also spirals when Emily's father is suspected for a crime he did not commit and because of Emily's love for her father and because of Margaret's threats Emily takes life into her own hands and lands in prison while having Marco's unborn child in her womb she decides to live on without Marco but Marco is heartbroken with Emily turning back on him he marries Jane and then leave off to the U.S to start a new life.

The latter now begins when the Alcantara's move in to the region of Olivarez, when William Alcantara (Joel Torre) and his children Katerina (Julia Montes) and Tomas (Joem Bascon) move into the neighborhood and William adopts a streetboy named Daniel (Coco Martin) although Daniel and his adoptive grandmother Virginia "Ate Henya" adopted him the two move into the mansion and Virginia becomes of household help but as they get older a friendship blossoms with the comeback of the Montenegro family with Marco's children Johanna (Melissa Ricks) and Nathan (Paulo Avelino). The story also furthers into the relationship between Katerina, and Daniel and the interfering of Johanna and Nathan begins. Meanwhile Emily comes home to vindicate what is rightfully hers, as she comes home she saves and rescues Daniel unknowingly Emily is on a quest of revenge on buying Margaret's shares but as she becomes successful with her plans identities, and also lives cross as sisters Virginia and Margaret are face to face with Virginia trying all her best to reveal Daniel's identity and Margaret trying to save her sons relationship with her kids and even her happy family life Virginia is at all odds and when she comes face to face with Marco and Emily relationships are all at odds when she tries to tell them the truth about Emily's child with Margaret's plans of trying to get the DNA test of Daniel's real identity the truth comes out but Emily is not all at ease with her new look as Emily Guidotti Marco still has feelings for her although shes a widow. And especially Jane's doubts on her marriage with Marco almost spiraling Margaret takes matters on her own hands as the sequence of events begin to spiral Emily is about to lose her business as her right hand man and also assistant Miguel (Nonie Buencamino) decides to steal all of the money from there company and get a loan from the Bonifacio bank which starts all there troubles and lands them in bankruptcy.[4]

Book 2

In this new chapter, the lives of Emily and Daniel are changed after losing their vast fortune and their empire. Emily and Daniel live normal lives as Emily is an assistant manager of a high class restaurant and Daniel also works as a struggling bartender but with the new switch of jobs due to the attempts of Tomas and Nathan to stop at nothing to make Daniel's life miserable becomes delighting yet devastating to them but meanwhile, Margaret also tries her best to stop the engagement and soon to be marriage of Emily and Marco as Marco celebrates Jane's one year anniversary he decides to try to win Emily's heart once again and rekindle there relationship but Margaret's life is at stake due to Miguel's threats on how to stop Emily and Marco's relationship or else Johanna, and Nathan and Daniel's lives are at stake and especially Virginia's but will the love of her family let her risk it all to save them after all her schemes? But a new person comes into there lives named Jean Bonifacio (Eula Valdez), a cousin of Jane who comes back to the Philippines to take over Jane's spot as President of the Bonifacio bank (who is ironically Jane, per se) this also draws speculation as Emily and Daniel receive flowers by an alias who also names herself as the flower "Black Lily" but mysteries are coming into place as Emily and Daniel must face Miguel and Tomas over there once reigning "Guidotti Imports". Things will start to change as Katerina tries to fix her relationship with Nathan and Daniel but as she tries to run away from Nathan she fears for Daniel's safety as her life is in danger. Will there ever be a way to save each one of them with the power of love? Or will it just make lives more at risk as power comes into conflict?

ABS-CBN continues its tradition of welcoming the year with the network's most highly anticipated series. Walang Hanggan features another ensemble cast led by Coco Martin. The show is written by the same creative manager, Reggie Amigo of the famed military drama, Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin also led by Martin. Trina N. Dayrit and Jerry Lopez Sineneng, who once worked together in the supernatural drama, Imortal were chosen to be its directors. Early production for the series began in October 2011. The series marks the return of Richard Gomez and Susan Roces to the ABS-CBN network.[5][6][7][8] It is also Gomez's reunion project with his previous on-screen partner Dawn Zulueta since their 1991 film, Hihintayin Kita Sa Langit[9][10] which is also the base of the drama. The series is one of Paulo Avelino's major projects since he transferred to the network.[11][12] Before the show's initial airing, Melissa Ricks hinted that her character is her first antagonist role[13] and also revealed that Joem Bascon, one of her cast members in the now defunct series, Nasaan Ka Elisa? will be part of the series as well. Walang Hanggan marks the first time Martin is paired with Julia Montes of the hit drama, Mara Clara as well as Martin's reunion with Helen Gamboa, one of his cast members from the 2009 drama, Tayong Dalawa. Arlene Mulach and Ogie Diaz are once again cast as partners since the 2009 critically acclaimed drama, May Bukas Pa, to bring a light flavor to the series. It is also the first time that the two Queens of Phillipine Cinema, Gamboa and Roces, will be working on the same project despite having been active in the entertainment industry for decades. After the series' successful launch, a production executive revealed plans to shoot some scenes in Europe[14] which was later proven right as Martin and Zulueta were chosen to fly to Milan, Italy and Vatican City to shoot wine business-related scenes before January had ended.[15] Jojo Saguin was added as a director at the middle of the series.

As said by the writers in Walang Hanggan: The Making video, the series aims to boost up tourism in the Philippines through featuring meadows and vineyards. It also aims to strengthen the livelihood of the Filipino people by making bignay, a fruit used for making wines popular.

Walang Hanggan is also known for its creativity having different title cards for every chapter, making it the first Philippine drama to do so. The first chapter featured Martin and Montes' character chasing each other up a hill until resting below a tree. The second chapter featured the same Walang Hanggan title font but using the Milan Cathedral as background symbolising Martin and Zulueta's time in Italy. The third chapter showed the infinity ring as it was taken off by Montes' character representing the married life of Katerina and Avelino's character, Nathan. The fourth chapter shows fire behind the title to represent the explosive revelations that several characters will face. The fifth chapter shows the Montenegro mansion where Martin's character, Daniel, will face being part of the Montenegro family.

At the start of Book 2, the title cards were extended in one or more scenes. In the first chapter of Book 2, the title card shows the infinity ring being covered with flames but in the extended version shown in the first episode of Book 2, it shows the infinity ring being dropped from the necklace before it burned. The title card represents how Daniel and Emily lost all their wealth and how the conflicts keep on heating up such as the upcoming debut of Eula Valdez's character, Black Lily. The second chapter of Book 2 shows Daniel and Katerina walking together in Albay, Bicol, signifying their reunion after a long search but in a trailer shown before its start, it was extended to show the two stopping at the end of the road representing a new start.

Due to its top ratings, Walang Hanggan is extended until October 2012 and will introduce new characters to keep the story going.[16][17] Book 2 of the series started on July 6, 2012. A channel was launched on ABS-CBN.com called Walang Hanggan TV which is hosted by Bianca Gonzalez that contains behind-the-scenes footage of the series.
