Workshopping bureaucrat activity requirements

(Message to all bureaucrats)

There is an ongoing discussion about implementing some kind of standards for administrative and bureaucrat activity levels; and activity requirements for bureaucrats have been explored several times in the past. I've prepared a draft addition to Wikipedia:Bureaucrats that would require at least one bureaucratic action every five years to retain the bureaucrat permission.

In the past, I've been hesitant of such proposals but I believe that if the bureaucrat group as a whole is seen to be actively engaged, the community may be more willing to grant additional tasks to the position.

Please let me know your thoughts. I'm not sure if this actually applies to any of us, but if you have not acted as a bureaucrat in over five years, you might consider requesting removal of the permission or otherwise signalling that you intend to return to bureaucrat activity. –xenotalk 14:22, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Message to most bureaucrats

A bureaucrat chat has been opened by Maxim at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Rich Farmbrough 2/Bureaucrat discussion.

Wikipedia:Bureaucrat discussion suggests notifying bureaucrats on their talk page as well as BN, hence this courtesy note. –xenotalk 16:44, 5 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Hiroshi Itō

The article Hiroshi Itō has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Voice actor 伊藤浩資 from Yokohama (born March 16, also from 81 Produce), who was originally added in 2008 because he had some voice roles.[1] Since then he has not voiced in any major roles, and is not notable for the ones he has on there or on JA wikipedia. He is also no longer on the 81 Produce roster.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Honorverse, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page A Call to Arms (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Words spelled with the Japanese full stop

Hey Nihonjoe,

It is good to see you are around a little more again recently. Can I ask you a question as an old friend who knows more of Japan than my just a little bit? Am I more or less right that the Japanese full stop is not worth its trouble when carrying it into English titles and running text?

What do you think of my recent addition to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Japan-related articles.

A bold edit, hoping to induce some response, following a sense of meh after posting at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Japan-related_articles#Japanese_words_spelled_with_the_full_stop.

This interest originated at Wikipedia_talk:Article_titles#Getting_tied_in_knots_by_a_Japanese_fad. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:11, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see no reason why we should keep copy and pasted form requests on here? --NeilN talk to me 23:17, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We don't want to have people saying they are being silenced. Let them post their form-letter requests and we can close them immediately while declining them. If they can't be bothered to abide by the rules at the top of the page, it's their own problem. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:20, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure I agree with that. "Tendentious, overlong or nonconstructive repetitive arguing on the talk page is not permitted. Disruptive edits of this kind may be removed by an administrator..." --NeilN talk to me 23:30, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Posting a form letter isn't really arguing, per se. I would still recommend simply archiving it, not just removing it. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:02, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Sea of Japan Suggested Rules of Engagement

Hi, Nihonjoe

Template: Liancourt Rocks probation related articles is wrong. WP:NCGN says nothing about IHO. This message is misleading as if IHO decides the name in Wikipedia.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 23:41, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not directly, no, but since it is the accepted (by most countries) international organization which names bodies of water like the Sea of Japan, whatever name it uses is going to be the most "widely accepted English name, in a modern context". I would consider it falling under the "Many governments have an agency to standardize the use of place names, such as the United States Board on Geographic Names (see BGN below), the Geographical Names Board of Canada, etc.", even though it's an international organization. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:01, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No. BGN is one of many criteria to determine the widely accepted name. IHO is not in the guideline because the name listed in the standard is not necessarily "widely accepted name". Sea of Japan is listed as "Japan Sea", East China Sea is listed as "Eastern China Sea" and so on.[2] You are forging your own guideline. We should abide by the guideline. Instead of referring to IHO, WP:NCGN should be referred to in the rule.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 00:42, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I was going off the talk page of the article, so drop the attitude. I have adjusted the template to remove mention of IHO. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 01:07, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Naming lameness

I would accept it as naming lameness if the suggested name was lame. And yet, the state of Virginia and the state of New York have already passed bills recognizing the other name of East Sea for the sea between Korea and Japan. The name "Sea of Japan" was popularized in a 1929 publication of the "Limits of the Oceans and the Seas" by the International Hydrographic Organization, which was released while Korea was under Japanese occupation. As such, many Koreans associate the name ‘Sea of Japan with a long period of occupation and violence.

It is not lame to talk about history with facts. What is lame is to deny alternate perspectives and insist absurdly on just your own.

Maybe we can call that "absurd insistence". Please do not engage in "absurd insistence". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jisunlim (talkcontribs) 07:31, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome to call it whatever you want. On Wikipedia, however, we go by consensus, and the current consensus is that we use "Sea of Japan". Learn to live with it. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:08, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well done

The Bureaucrat's Barnstar
Time and time again, the bureaucrats of en-wiki demonstrate their levelheadedness and expertise. Like an anesthesiologist in an operating room, you spend most of your time screwing around reading a magazine, but stand ready to spring into action when needed, only to fade into the background once your important work is done.

Or perhaps that's more like Batman? Whatever your preferred metaphor, I am consistently impressed by the bureaucrat corps. Thank you for your service. HiDrNick! 12:46, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA Crat Chat

Hello, Nihonjoe,

I just wanted to thank you and all of the bureaucrats who participated in the bureaucrat chat after my RfA was closed. There were a lot of votes and comments to go through along with the enormous amount of content on the crat chat talk page. I appreciate the time and care the bureaucrats took to consider all of the arguments and come to a consensus.

I never imagined that my RfA would be at all contentious or have such a big turnout. Although I hope you don't have many close call RfAs in the future, I know if you do, that Wikipedia's bureaucrats will find their way to a decision. Thank you again for your work in bringing this RfA to a close. Liz Read! Talk! 18:39, 9 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 02:39, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Following a community discussion ending August 2015, consensus was reached to remove the bureaucrat permissions of users who have not participated in bureaucrat activity for three years.

To assist with the implementation of this requirement, please see Wikipedia:Bureaucrat activity. Modeled after Wikipedia:Inactive administrators and similar to that process, the log page will be created on 1 September 2015. Bureaucrats who have not met the activity requirements as of that date will be notified by email (where possible) and on their talk page to advise of the pending removal.

If the notified user does not return to bureaucrat activity and the permissions are removed, they will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFB. Removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon the affected user in any way.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. –xenotalk

MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:20, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, I think my edit was justified. One cannot cite the idea that the Sad and Rabid Puppies are entirely unrelated to a Puppy; and it is clearly pertinent that the Puppies were described as a "bunch of white guys".

I still also feel that the quote from Gallo is perhaps given undue prominence. Pinkbeast (talk) 03:30, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The two groups were run by different people with no coordination between them. Both groups have stated as much. As for the puppies being described as a "bunch of white guys", they were described as that, but it was a completely inaccurate description. Larry Correia is Hispanic, not white. Sarah A. Hoyt is also Hispanic, and clearly not male. The proposed nominees ran the gamut as far as race, gender, and political stripe. In doing research for the article, there were many, many instances of non-white, non-male supporters or participants with Sad Puppies (I can't speak for Vox Day and his crowd as his rhetoric was often so vitriolic that I tried to avoid them).
As for the quote from Gallo, she posted it publicly, and quite a lot was made of it in various press reports I read, and Tom DOherty himself responded very publicly about it, so I don't think it is given more weight than it's due. It was one of the more egregious cases of name calling during the entire process this year. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:29, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also, since we are discussing the content, this discussion should be continued on the talk page of the article, not here. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:30, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The recent comments about Vox Day on the talk page by Pinkbeast are blatant BLP violations and should be removed.
