Sherlock Gnomes is a 2018 3D computer-animated comedy film directed by John Stevenson.[2] A sequel to 2011's Gnomeo & Juliet, the film starred the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mary J. Blige, and Johnny Depp. It was produced by Paramount Animation, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Rocket Pictures,[4] with the animation service provided by Mikros Image.[4] It was the first film from Paramount Animation to be entirely animated, and the first animated film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer since 2008's Igor.
The film was released in the United States on March 23, 2018, by Paramount Pictures, unlike its predecessor, which was distributed by Touchstone Pictures.[1] It received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and has grossed over $15 million worldwide.

Production
In March 2012, it was reported that the film is in development at Rocket Pictures. Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil, two of the nine writers on the first film, are writing the script for the film. Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish are producing the film, and Elton John, an exec producer, is again composing new songs for the film. The film will feature Sherlock Gnomes, "the greatest ornamental detective" hired by the characters from the first film, who will try to solve the mystery of disappearing gnomes.[5] In September 2012, it was reported that John Stevenson, one of the directors[6] of Kung Fu Panda, has been set to direct the film.[7] In November 2015, it was announced that Johnny Depp would voice Sherlock Gnomes and that the film would be released on January 12, 2018.[8] However, unlike the first film, which was released by Disney under their Touchstone Pictures banner, Paramount Animation and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are producing the film, with McAvoy and Blunt reprising their roles.[9] In May 2017, the film was pushed back two months to March 23, 2018.[1] Kelly Asbury, the director of the first film, will be involved in the sequel as creative consultant.[10]
Release
The film was officially released in the United States on March 23, 2018 by Paramount Pictures. In the UK, it will be released on May 11, 2018.
Marketing
On November 3, 2017, seven teaser posters were released. The same day, the title was changed from Gnomeo and Juliet 2: Sherlock Gnomes to Sherlock Gnomes.[11] On November 7, the first trailer was revealed.[12] The trailer was shown before screenings of Daddy's Home 2.
The film had also released posters parodying previous films from 2017, such as Darkest Hour, The Disaster Artist, The Greatest Showman, The Post, I, Tonya, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, All the Money in the World, Wonder Woman, and The Shape of Water.[13]
Reception
Box office
As of March 25, 2018[update], Sherlock Gnomes has grossed $10.6 million in the United States and Canada, and $4.6 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $15.2 million, against a production budget of $59 million.[3]
In the United States and Canada, Sherlock Gnomes was released alongside Pacific Rim Uprising, Midnight Sun, Unsane and Paul, Apostle of Christ, and was projected to gross $13–18 million from 3,600 theaters in its opening weekend.[14] It ended up debuting to $10.6 million, underperforming but still finishing 4th at the box office.[15]
Critical response
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 21% based on 19 reviews, with an average rating of 4.5/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Sherlock Gnomes is sadly, utterly stumped by the mystery of the reason for its own existence."[16] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 41 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[17] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, the same score earned by its predecessor.[15]
