Amina J. Mohammed (born 27 June 1961) is the current Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and a former Minister of Environment of Federal Republic of Nigeria from November 2015 to December 2016.[2] Mrs Amina Mohammed is a versatile and proficient mobilizer, and project coordinator. She had served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs between 2005 to2010[3]. She was instrumental in bringing about the unprecedented 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including the Sustainable Development Goals.

Amina J. Mohammed is from Gombe State, north-eastern Nigeria. She was born on 27th of June, 1961[4] to a Nigerian veterinarian-herdsman and a British nurse. She is the eldest of five daughters.[5]

Prior to this position, Ms. Mohammed served as Founder and CEO of the Center for Development Policy Solutions and as an Adjunct Professor for the Master’s in Development Practice program at Columbia University. Previously, she acted as the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on the Millennium Development Goals after serving three presidents over a period of six years. In 2005, she was charged with the coordination of Nigeria’s debt relief funds toward the achievement of the MDGs. From 2002-2005, Mohammed coordinated the Task Force on Gender and Education for the UN Millennium Project.

Awards

Amina J. Mohammed was named by Foreign Policy magazine as 2017 Diplomat of the Year. She is one of the 2017 Power with Purpose honorees selected by Devex in partnership with McKinsey & Company. New African Magazine also included Ms. Mohammed as one of its 100 Most Influential Africans of 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2016 she was amongst Fortune Magazine's annual list of the World's Greatest Leaders and also its 2015 listing of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders. In 2015, Ms. Mohammed was also profiled by Vogue Magazine as one of the 13 female Climate Warriors on the frontline. Amina J. Mohammed received the National Honours Award of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2006 and was inducted into the Nigerian Women’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
