    Hi, I want to become an auto-confirmed user to create a new article in Wikipedia. I have tried many times to contribute some information by editing articles. but as a result, I was blocked.     Force font for special characters?

    Hi, I recently created Stick figure#Unicode (Had some trouble creating the table, but got there in the end). It has special characters, the only font I know to have them is OpenMoji (OpenMoji), there are also combining character sequences that that font supports.
    I was wondering if there is a way to suggest to the browser to use that font if it is installed. At current it displays tofu, even though I have the font installed.
    I was thinking of <span style="font-family:'OpenMoji Color';">🯆‍👗</span> (this works, I tested it). However that would mean the font is forced with no fallback, meaning that if they don't have OpenMoji, but do have a different font that supports it (or the default fonts get updated to inclide it), they would see tofu.

    Citing page numbers from Google Books

    Hello, I'm wondering if there's a way to find page numbers from Google Books when they don't appear in the copy of the book Google shows. Recently I created the article Malcolm Fairley, and I've found quite a useful source from Google Books that I'd like to cite (here), but their copy doesn't appear to display any page numbers. I was going to use Harvard citation but that requires me to input a page number for it to work properly. So, is there any way to get the page numbers without buying a physical copy of the book, or will it be a case of just citing it as a cite book in the text itself?     @This is Paul: You could try asking on the talk page of a relevant wikiproject whether any editor there has the book. WorldCat can tell you which libraries hold the book.     Hello, IP user. The messages are telling you that you have somehow added a <ref> tag without adding its closing </ref>, and the messages link to a help page which explains this. You can always undo the last edit by picking "History", finding the edit in question and "Undo". --ColinFine (talk) 22:33, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Contradictory data about river Derwent, Derbyshire.

    Hello everybody, the page River Derwent, Derbyshire says in the first lines that it is 106 km long, while in the template it says 80 km long. The latter should be the right length, it is given as "about 50 miles long" in the Derbyshire Rivers web site. May I correct the page myself or somebody else should make the correction?     @Gab.pr: welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for spotting a possible error. You may fix it yourself, but don't assume 50 miles is correct. Later in the article it says that it's meandering course adds 16 miles to its length (which corresponds to the 66 miles in the lede.     It's complicated, as there are differing way of measuring, but there is already a partial explanation on the article talk page from eight years ago.     Hi. I'm not exactly sure what you mean. There are a variety of "patrols" at Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Patrols for an overview. For example, we have a page at Special:RecentChanges where you can see edits being made as soon as they happen across the encyclopedia, which is useful in helping out with reverting vandalism soon after it happens; the patrol description page is as Wikipedia:Recent changes patrol.     Today I made a factual contribution to the Wikipedia page "Jim McGinty" ( [1] )

    I added the following text " partly responsible for the OATHS, AFFIDAVITS AND STATUTORY DECLARATIONS ACT 2005 (GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, WA 23 December 2005 page 6244 ), which effectively changed the OATH and AFFIRMATION to remove the monarch and replace it with Legislative Council/Legislative Assembly. Despite the fact "REMOVING the MONARCH" is an act of blatant TREASON he was somehow recognised as a reformer " .

    Removal of the monarch is an act of war against the Commonwealth .

    Criminal Code Act 1995 Subdivision B—Treason 80.1 Treason

    (1) A person commits an offence if the person: (d) levies war, or does any act preparatory to levying war, against the Commonwealth; Penalty: Imprisonment for life.

    (2) A person commits an offence if the person: (a) receives or assists another person who, to his or her knowledge, has committed an offence against this Subdivision (other than this subsection) with the intention of allowing him or her to escape punishment or apprehension; or (b) knowing that another person intends to commit an offence against this Subdivision (other than this subsection), does not inform a constable of it within a reasonable time or use other reasonable endeavours to prevent the commission of the offence. Penalty: Imprisonment for life.

    4.Oaths, general form of

    (1)If under this Act or any other law or the exercise of the Royal Prerogative a person has to take an oath, the form of the oath is to begin with one of the following, according to the person’s preference —

    (a)I swear by Almighty God…;

    (b)I swear by [name of a deity recognised by his or her religion]…;

    (c)I swear, according to the religion and the beliefs I profess, … .

    (2)The fact that at the time of taking an oath a person has no religious belief does not affect the validity of the oath.

    (3)Despite subsection (1) a person who has to take an oath may take an oath in any form or manner that he or she wants if the person before whom he or she is to take the oath is satisfied that —

    (a)the oath will bind the person’s conscience; and

    (b)the person understands the consequences of taking an oath.

    (4)An oath taken under subsection (3) has the same force and effect as an oath taken under subsection (1).

    5.Affirmation may be made instead of oath

    (1)If under this Act or any other law or the exercise of the Royal Prerogative a person has to or may take an oath, the person is entitled to affirm instead.

    (2)If under this Act or any other law or the exercise of the Royal Prerogative a person has to take an oath and —

    (a)the person says that the taking of an oath is contrary to his or her religious belief or conscience; or

    (b)it is not reasonably practicable, without inconvenience or delay, at the time when and place where the oath has to be taken, to administer to the person an oath in a manner and form that will bind the person’s conscience; or

    (c)for any other sufficient reason the taking of an oath is found not to be appropriate,

    the person may be required to affirm instead.

    (3)An affirmation made instead of an oath has the same force and effect as the oath.

    (4)The form of the affirmation is as follows —

    I sincerely declare and affirm ... ,

    which words replace those set out in section 4(1) as the beginning of any oath.

    as a result of this act the oath and affirmation contained in Constitution Act 1889 ( Western Australia Constitution ) was altered on 1 Jan 2006 to remove the monarch and replace the monarch with "Legislative Council/Legislative Assembly". this is treason !     Lucas76520 The French Wikipedia is separate from the English Wikipedia. As far as the English Wikipedia is concerned, you are a new user and cannot directly create articles until your account is four days old here, with 10 edits or more.     @Lucas76520: Why is it so urgent? Wikipedia doesn't operate on deadlines. However, yes, when the draft is reviewed (and doesn't contain some sort of rule violation that keeps it from getting promoted to article, like the verifyability requirement, it is going to be promoted to an article, no matter if you are online or not.     Lost access to account - how do I remove it

    Hello! I used to be User:TheFanoulis on both the Greek and English Wikipedia sites, but now I want to retire the accounts.     Do you want to retire, or reclaim the accounts? If you wish to retire, you can just ignore them. There is no way to delete accounts. If you wish to reclaim them, you'll need to remember the password, as there isn't an additional way to recover the password than by the associated email.     Transgender

    I was visiting the transgender page and found it had some erroneous and misleading statistics, particularly in relation to the statistics of transgender people in Canada. I joined Wikipedia expressly to correct this mistake but the page is protected. How do I get the page to share accurate statistics if I can’t edit it?     The article is "semi-protected" to prevent vandalism (see WP:SEMI). That just prevents editing from IP addresses, which is not relevant as you have created an account. You'll be able to edit the article directly after your account is > 4 days old and you have made > 10 other edits (which in any case will assist you to learn about editing here, which can be a steep learning curve). Note that the advice about supplying reliable sources still applies — and edit summaries explaining what you are doing in an area of potential controversy will help, Cassandra74f32. Please "sign" any contributions on Talk Pages with 4 tildes, ~~~~ which also adds a datestamp.     @Cassandra74f32: You are in the mobile version of the site where it's difficult to find the talk page. It's at Talk:Transgender. It's easier to post an edit request if you switch to the desktop version by clicking "Desktop" at the bottom of a page.     Is there a template to mention a current discussion that isn’t an Rfc

    So I know that Rfc’s and Afd’s have a template that is used to let editors know there is a discussion taking place. Those templates are placed on the article page and the talk page. If there is a discussion taking place on the article’s talk page that isn’t and Rfc or Afd, is there a template a person can use that can be placed on the top of the article (not the talk page) to alert editors to that discussion?     @Artsy Koala: The only absolute requirement for a Wikipedia article is that the subject must be notable by our definition: see WP:N. Therefore, start by determining that your subject is notable before you put any effort into actually writing the article. An otherwise-perfect article about a non-notable subject will be deleted. We delete about 200 articles every day. If your subject is notable, we can help you even if your first attempt is very poor, but we cannot help you with notability.     Note also that if you are looking to register an account to create the page, per Wikipedia's username policy, the account must represent a single individual person, not a group or other abstract entity. And furthermore, even for single-person accounts, the account must represent a fixed physical person, not a role. For example, "User:ExamplePlace school" or "User:Teacher of class 2B" are forbidden, but "User:Jeannette Mysurname" is allowed. JIP | Talk 16:02, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    (edit conflict) Also, see WP:COI and WP:PAID - if you are an employee of the school, you are recommended to not create a page on the topic. You also have to make sure that the institution is notable by Wikipedia's standards; you will also need to create a Wikipedia account to create a new article.     Hello, Jeannette. I suspect that, like many people, you are making the mistake of thinking that Wikipedia is a place to tell the world about yourself. It is not. If Wikipedia at some time has an article about your school, it will not belong to the school, the school will have no control over it, and it will not necessarily say what the school would like it to say.     Thank you very much for your past donations, which have gone to the Wikimedia Foundation and not to English Wikipedia, which is run by unpaid volunteers. We do it because we like it. Among other things, donations help to keep the servers running which host all the Wikipedia projects. On a personal note, I feel that credit cards are a Bad Thing, so congratulations on closing your account even if this may have been painful for you.     In the article of the AADA (American Academy of Dramatic Arts) Keito Okamoto is listed as one of the alumnis in 2020, however they have neither been any announcements regarding that nor has the article regarding himself been updated.

    It's possible the article is in error. When in doubt, check the source. Everything in Wikipedia should be verifiable, meaning you can check an outside source to verify a statement and see where the information came from—Wikipedia isn't a primary source itself. In this case, it doesn't look like there is a citation for that fact, so I went ahead and added a "citation needed" tag.
    If you ever want to fix something like that yourself, you can always add a citation tag by clicking "edit source" at the top and typing {{citation needed}} after the relevant fact.     @Floydian: I don't see any cite templates specific to this purpose. Existing usage seems to be mostly raw links or {{Cite web}}. I'd so something like:

On the non-mobile version of Wikipedia, click on "Preferences" at the top, and under the "User Profile" tab scroll down and you should see checkboxes under "Email Options."     My situation concerns the articles on the Eurovision Song Contest. I find it infuriating that they don't show the logo on an article for a contest of Eurovision preview when hovering over a link to said article. It instead shows a map of all the participating countries in said contest. I think it would be much better for the logo of the contest. The participation map also shows on the results page when searching for the article on the inbuilt Wikipedia search bar at the top of the page.     It's not a bug. The software intentionally uses specific images and not ones necessarily in the infobox - pretty sure it picks one of the first four images based on some criteria.     Searching for Eurovision on mobile
    For anyone else who was confused for a hot minute, there are images that come up when you search - but only on mobile, as screen-shotted (both browser and app it seems). Pretty similar to page previews but I would image they are different features in practice. It would seem that its looking for the first "image" using only the inline image code so it's skipping things in templates like the infobox. That makes sense to an extent - you wouldn't want it including the padlock from a protection template for instance - but I think I agree that the image in the infobox is probably the best choice in most cases. This is however, an issue with the Wikimedia software so as Enjoyer of World said, it would need to raised as a development ticket and probably take some time to even get accepted - but if you feel strongly about it then I would encourage you to raise it at the technical village pump who might have a better idea of whether it's worth taking further --Paul ❬talk❭ 11:59, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    We have two preview features. The opt-in "Navigation popups" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets shows the logo for Eurovision Song Contest 1998. The question is about the default feature "page previews" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. It shows the page image which is used in several places and is determined by mw:Extension:PageImages#Image choice. I'm not sure why it picks File:ESC 1998 Map.svg for Eurovision Song Contest 1998.     From my experience, fair use images are not used in previews. I would assume this is because the fair use license states that the image will only be used on the specific page, not in previews or at other locations.     @Rizosome: 50 is the software limit. It should almost never be used in practice. The user mention has to be added in the same edit as the signature so [3] doesn't work. See more at mw:Manual:Echo. There are unclear rules if you edit existing content. The only safe way is to add a new post with mentions and a signature. At Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo you can enable "Successful mention" and "Failed mention" if you want to know whether your pings work.     What to do about citations for Communities, (ie LGBTQIA+) under-represented in "Legitimate" Sources

    I when looking up the proper format to cite for references when updating LGBT Articles particularly in re: Bisexual+ Topics, was distressed and stymied to find that History.com; The Medium; LiveJournal, some of HuffPo Queer et al seem to be frowned on. Given the undeniable issues that (1) there are just not THAT many Books or Articles by, for, about the Bi+ Community that are not Bizzaro Hogwash, Porn, or Hysterical Religious Tracts that are found in Mainstream Sources (2) the well-documented economic poverty of a Group, that itself is a Sub-group, of a still marginalized cultural group in much of the mainstream, so that disenfranchisement has forced them to turn to free/lowcost online media to publish.     @CyntWorkStuff: I think the sections at WP:RS/SPS and WP:SPS may be of interest to you. I think it'll depend on each case, which sources exactly you're talking about and what you're trying to reference, etc, but per WP:SPS: Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established subject-matter expert, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications. My understanding of that is that if the author is an 'expert' in the field, who has published work in reliable sources (books/journals) before, then if they write content for those sorts of websites you mentioned, then those individual sources could be used.     @Wikieditor6557: see the documentation at {{cite web}}, which is a massive tangle of information which is likely to make your eyes glaze over. The URL status is unused unless the archive URL is set. When url-status=live, it means that the original URL is still good, but the reference is also available at the archive site. This affects the way the reference is presented to the reader, so the reader will click on the original and only go to the archive if the original has died. As an editor you should put it in only if the original URL is still live and you also have an archive URL, and you have a suspicion that the original is likely to remain live for awhile. -Arch dude (talk) 03:21, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    How is it decided whether an article, or the category of the same name, or both, will be included in a given supercategory?     @Naddruf: Not everybody who adds an article to a category knows all of the categories that exist, so if there are some that should be added, you are always welcome to do so.     Help wanted: template documentation expert

    I edited the document and removed colon before category names (Please Click here). But, these categories didn't go outside the green box (template documentation) and the template are not shown in every single categories. Can anyone fix the template?     Savile honours were either removed or were acknowledged that they passed with his death. I am a family member of Annabelle Chvostek's and I am trying to be as neutral and factual as possible. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can correct it. Thank you!     Resilience was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award and includes a co-write with Bruce Cockburn'. In 2012, Annabelle released the album 'Rise', which she co-produced with Torontonian Don Kerr. 'Rise' was nominated for a Juno Award and a Canadian Folk Music Award. In 2015, she released the 'Be The Media, co-produced with Jeff Oehler of Beehive Productions in Saranac Lake, NY.

    Her upcoming album "String Of Pearls" is due out in March, 2021. It is a collaboration between Canadian and Uruguayan musicians, with musical arrangements by Uruguayan composer and multi-instrumentalist, Fernando Rosa. "String Of Pearls" was co-produced by David Travers-Smith, Fernando Rosa, and Annabelle Chvostek, and was recorded in both Toronto and Montevideo.:
