Roscigno
Roscigno is a small town and comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy.
Roscigno was abandoned and rebuilt at the beginning of 1900 when the old site was abandoned because the inhabitants feared a landslide, their fears however never come true. For this reason Roscigno Vecchi (Old Roscigno) represents today an example of a XIX century rural town developed around a central square and a church not modified by modern architectural or infrastructural changes.
The mountain where both Old and New Roscigno were built was inhabited since prehistory as testimonied by several necropolis and archeological sites.
The first mention of Roscigno is in a document from 1086, in the XIV century was property of Carleto Monforte, followed by the Caracciolo family in 1543, in 1621 as a Duchy belonged to the Villany family.
