Curator(s) or manager(s) of image issues?

I'm a longtime Wikipedian. But here is something I'm ignorant about: is there a person or persons devoted to dealing with issues related to images/photos for existing articles? My reason for asking this is that I've received an email from the holder of copyrighted photos of Gerald Heard, hinting that he may be willing to donate a good photo. Can you suggest someone I might contact? and if so, how can I contact them?Joel Russ (talk) 20:55, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Joel Russ Most images, and ALL images of living persons, are hosted at Wikimedia Commons. They have a help desk but for instructions how to donate copyright material, see Commons:COM:ET. The simpler procedure is for the holder of the copyright (usually the photographer) to upload it themselves by following the instructions at commons:Special:UploadWizard, which page also contains a link to their Help Desk. Feature photo not displaying correctly

The primary feature photo for Mount Verendrye is not displaying correctly as it is stretched. It's not an issue with my computer's cache because it appears the same on another unrelated computer. Ron Clausen (talk) 01:49, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ron Clausen. The image displays just fine to me. I am viewing it through the desktop site on a Android smartphone. Cullen328 (talk) 02:21, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Try with a regular computer, and an iPad. Ron Clausen (talk) 03:04, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So I looked at a Samsung smartphone, and it does display correctly which aligns with your result. So there must be an issue with type of operating system. Please look into it. Ron Clausen (talk) 03:19, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So it now displays correctly, so somebody fixed it. Would that person please also fix the same issue with the feature photo for Mount Sparrowhawk. Thanks. Ron Clausen (talk) 03:33, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ron Clausen: There's nothing wrong with the infobox picture on Mount Sparrowhawk; the article was last edited in September. The article history for Mount Verendrye shows no alteration to the infobox image's details. Bazza (talk) 08:27, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ron Clausen Sometimes this is a problem at your end, and can be fixed with WP:BYPASS. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:47, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but that didn't fix it. Again, if it was just this computer I could believe it's something on my end. But the fact that I can go to the wife's iPad (which doesn't ever use Wikipedia, and not connected to the desktop) and find the same problem indicates something wrong at Wikipedia. Again, the feature photo for Mount Sparrowhawk is stretched, but when clicked on, it will display correctly. Ron Clausen (talk) 12:02, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've just compared the image ratios reported by Chrome on Windows 10 for the image in the article's infobox, and the original on Commons:
They're both around the same ratio, no stretching here. Bazza (talk) 15:31, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Here is my view of the stretched image in the infobox:
    flickr.com/photos/145389106@N04/52444477631/in/dateposted-public/
Compare to how it's supposed to look:
    flickr.com/photos/145389106@N04/52444477251/in/dateposted-public/ Ron Clausen (talk) 00:04, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
According to the commons page, you uploaded two versions of that file on 20 September. Your "stretched" screenshot seems to be using the earlier version of the file, which is substantially taller than the later (current) one. I don't know why you would be seeing the earlier version, unless it's a caching issue. CodeTalker (talk) 00:38, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure how it's a caching issue on my computer when the photo appears stretched on an unrelated iPad as well. Are we talking spooky entanglement? (a quantum particles reference) Ron Clausen (talk) 00:56, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ron Clausen: (edit conflict) The stretched image in your first link is not the same image. It's the first version at File:Mt. Sparrowhawk.jpg#filehistory, stretched to the height-width ratio of the new version. This sometimes happens for a while at certain resolutions or on certain connections but it doesn't usually last a month. For me, the article displays https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/40/Mt._Sparrowhawk.jpg/272px-Mt._Sparrowhawk.jpg which loads the right image for me. MediaWiki makes HTML specifying both height and width of images so the browser can reserve space for the image before it's loaded and display other elements like text without having to move things around later. If an image with another ratio is loaded for some reason then it's stretched by your own browser. It's often hard to fix and I already see the right image so I cannot tell whether a couple of things I tried are working. See commons:Help:Purge#Advanced manual thumbnail purging for some things you can try, but it will probably fix itself eventually. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:53, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense. But doesn't explain why it also appears on the unconnected iPad. Ron Clausen (talk) 21:15, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ron Clausen: There are meta:Wikimedia servers around the World to handle the traffic. You probably hit the same data centre and maybe the same server. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:41, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Created a page for Gary Lionelli

Created a page for the music composer Gary Lionelli, however there seems to be very few interviews or articles of him online. Can use some help with this page. The Ajan (talk) 13:18, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, The Ajan. I don't recommend starting by creating redlinks. Instead, create a draft using WP:AFC. Writing an article begins with finding the sources - and most of them have to be independent sources, so interviews don't help. Sources don't have to be online; but if the reliable independent sources don't exist, then he doesn't meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and it's not worth spending any time on it. ColinFine (talk) 13:32, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see you did attempt to create it in mainspace, and it got deleted. That is what tends to happen. That's why I recommend working in draft space. But you also apparently used copyright material, which is a no-no. Have you read WP:YFA? ColinFine (talk) 13:34, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If there are very few articles about him, that's not a good sign as far as trying to assert his notability. Interviews are pretty near useless for this purpose. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:49, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing guidelines for Simple Wikipedia

I have frequently removed from Surname pages entries that have no corresponding article. Recently however a User, with more WikiCredentials than this old plodder, reversed one such (it had a reference though). Their comment was "notability was explained in the entry's addition - disambig pages commonly include unlinked entries". I don't mind being wrong, but who's right? Doug butler (talk) 20:26, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Same here, I don't mind being wrong. It has been my understanding that disambiguation is just for that purpose - to direct to a more specific article, or to at least mention other notable possibilities. I've never heard of a hard rule that all entries must have blue links. For the purpose here, I added an entry with a reasonable notability claim - a musical artist who had at least one Billboard Hot 100 hit. I believe the inclusion would be helpful for anyone searching for Janey Street on this site, for at least they would see she's a notable Street, and someone may at some point decide to create an article. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 20:55, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
From WP:DABSTYLE: "Each bulleted entry should have a navigable (blue) link, normally as the entry itself (see the previous bullet), or in the description if the entry is red-linked or unlinked".
This may be "commonly done", but it seems to me that it is directly contrary to an editing guideline. ColinFine (talk) 22:01, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. That's what the guideline says then, albeit mass violation going on. So what is the guideline for what qualifies for a blue link in the description of a red link or unlinked entry? Has this ever been resolved in any meaningful way? I could certainly think of blue links to use in descriptions. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 23:00, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Disambiguation articles are there to disambiguate between articles – actual articles that exist. People who want to "add a subject to Wikipedia", without the bother of actually creating an article, sometimes add a redlink to a disambiguation page. They shouldn't. They'd do better to add a redlink to an existing article where a mention of their chosen subject would be relevant. Maproom (talk) 07:24, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Points taken, but creating an article takes a lot of time (including defense of it), something I and many others don't have. Mentioning a notable subject at least gives a searcher something to land on, and see that an article is deserving. I'm just going to remove all the notable subjects I've recently added to a few DAB pages - this conflict reminds me why I essentially quit a few years ago. Stevie is the man! How to create a numbered list without indent?

I was wondering how to create an ordered numbered list without each item indented. For example if I use the code # I get:

    1. Item 1
    2. Item 2

Notice there is an indent. I am trying to get a list without this indent. Cheers! Thinker78 (talk) 23:25, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Thinker78. You can probably do it with explicit CSS, but I don't know the details. If you study Help:List, I think it might give you some clues. ColinFine (talk) 19:21, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Thinker78: For a decent solution, you need to apply CSS styling to the list's HTML container (which in this case is <ol>) as well as its items. [1] has some technical information about this.
The {{Ordered list}} template, which you can use in place of wiki mark-up, only lets you apply styling to the list's items, not the list itself. You can cheat a bit and do this
    1. Item 1
    2. Item 2
but it's a clunky solution and you need to be sure that the default indentation is always what you think it will be, and whether your list will grow into ten or more items.
Aside from all that, is there a reason you wish to do this on Wikipedia? Bazza (talk) 10:26, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza 7 Thanks for the info you provided. The reason I want this is because I have noticed that when someone posts in a thread and ends with an ordered list, the subsequent reply's indentation matches that of the list. The indent can be increased in the reply easily, but the different indentation of the list can confuse things a bit. Thinker78 (talk) 00:11, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding pictures or editing picture

Hi, I would like to know how I can edit photos in wikipedia. Can I delete a photo and then upload a new one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ellagurl289woo (talkcontribs) 15:27, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Step 1: find a better photo, which either is free of copyright restrictions or whose copyright you own and and are willing to donate (actually it's more complicated than that, I've just given an outline)
Step 2: upload it to Wikimedia Commons
Step 3: edit the article, replacing the link to the image that's currently shown by the one you want there instead. Maproom (talk) 17:25, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ellagurl289woo Most photos you find on the Internet are copyrighted and can't be used on Wikipedia. Please make sure you understand what Maproom is saying. If it's not clear, please let us know. Thanks. David10244 (talk) 08:23, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Better photograph

Of course, there are many opinions on what is a good picture. Now Wikimedia can also show old full-sized versions of pictures. Some are better than the newest ones. The example is here [5]: the newest exaggerates contrast and color. I would like to show the 2nd picture from the year 2008 in a Wikipedia article. It's a little better. Is it possible? The name "20200108100238%21Novgorod_torg.JPG" wasn't succesful. Jari Rauma (talk) 19:12, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd have to agree that the earlier version looks better. And express my doubts that the original ever had the vivid colours of the latest version. I don't think it is possible to link earlier versions of the same file though. This image is hosted on Commons, and you'd probably do best to raise the matter there, at least initially. AndyTheGrump (talk) 19:26, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I just find the same answer in StackExchange, year 2013: [6]. There a superuser didn't have the knowledge of how to do it. Jari Rauma (talk) 19:34, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jari Rauma: You cannot display an old version of a file. You would have to make it the current version or upload it as a separate file with another name. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:48, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Inline book ref - archives

Hi Folks!! Second question of the night. Is possible to do a ref in some way where you have volume 1, volume 2 and volume 3 of a book series. This is book 1 in the series [7] for the Élisa Mercœur article. I specifically looking at ref 6 on the fr article. It seems to be able to do the whole series on one line. Can that be done here? Volume 1,2 and 3 are all on archive.org. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 23:10, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Scope creep: the French article just constructed the reference from a template followed by three plain URLs, all within the <ref>...</ref> tags. YOu can do the same thing here. -Arch dude (talk) 00:16, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    What template? scope_creepTalk 07:31, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Scope creep: if you want do it French-style, the volume links wouldn't be contained in any template. As you already have volume 1 linked in the cite book template, you could add a vol=1 parameter to make that more visible. Then you'd append
    [https://archive.org/details/oeuvrescomplte02merc Vol. 2.] [https://archive.org/details/oeuvrescomplte03merc Vol. 3.]
after the closing }} of the cite book template. Or, you could remove the url parameter from the template and list all three volumes right after it. The French article is similarly using regular external link formatting; theirs is encased in ref tags and ours is not. For bonus points, you can also include the linked OCLC numbers using Template:OCLC right after the closing bracket of each volume link. Volume 2: OCLC 1254585716. Volume 3: OCLC 1254585715. I'm not necessarily wanting to do it, in the style of the fr wikipedia. It seems a good way of doing a compressed references without spreading it across multiple entries. Is there nothing on here that can do that. scope_creepTalk 13:13, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we have a citation template that itself can contain multiple volumes—perhaps because we'd rather see each volume cited specifically to support the content—but I think the French option would work well for a bibliography entry. All put together, it should look like this:
I'm not sure it can get much more compressed. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 18:19, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Firefangledfeathers: That looks pretty decent with seperate authors and provides and compresses it somewhat, which I wasn't sure about. There is more text here. Its not as compressed as the french ref but its really decent. Firefangledfeathers, thanks for that work and formatting. Its ideal and better than I could do. @Arch dude: Thanks. scope_creepTalk 00:09, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Username correction

I would like to edit my name if possible without creating a whole new account I accidentally put Martinez right after the period after my middle initial for instance, Manuel A.Martinez Jr. I prefer it to be.... Manuel A. Martinez Jr.

I would like to add a self made illustration on tonicity in the danish version on osmosis

My biology professor says that my illustration is very good at illustrating tonicity, and a lot of my classmates says that the illustration gave them a deeper understanding... when I tried to add the picture on the page, it got refused instantly. How can i add the picture on the page? Is there someone i can contact? NiklasKJensen (talk) 10:25, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@NiklasKJensen, edits at da-WP has to be discussed there, en-WP does not "rule" other language WP:s. You can try the talkpage of the da-article in question, the talkpage of the editor who reverted you (see the "Se historik" tab on that article), or perhaps Wikipedia:Landsbybrønden. Good luck! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:51, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your illustration needs to first be uploaded to WP:Wikimedia Commons, which is used as an image source in most cases. You will be asked to relinquish the rights to your image, permitting reuse by anyone for any purpose, even commercial. You may otherwise choose to upload the image to the article, especially if you wish to use a non-free license. Trying to sign in to Wikipedia

I am trying to sign in to Wikipedia but I can't remember my username. Is there a way for me to find it? Thanks 2A00:23C1:CD80:F801:A535:4980:AF08:8C74 (talk) 10:48, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you remember articles you have edited, try examining their edit histories to see if you recognize your username. If you attached an email address to your account, you can recover your login information by using the password recovery feature. If these things do not help, you will need to create a new account and say on your new user page that you lost access to your old account. 331dot (talk) 10:59, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to get my article approved

I am creating an article about myself. I am on-air personality. How can I have it published? Would you recommend any Wiki specialist or company who can help me publish it. What documents do you need to verify me as well as main things you need from me. The explanation in wiki is very obscure 2603:301D:2508:8500:5D85:D02B:3FD2:DAD8 (talk) 19:59, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2603:301D:2508:8500:5D85:D02B:3FD2:DAD8 , So-called specialist companies exist to take your money. They may place the article you want onto Wikpedia, where it may be speedily deleted. Meanwhile, you have paid them "for an article". If they again try to get the article on Wikipedia for you, another deletion will result. The basic criterion for a Wikipedia article (especially a biography) is WP:notability: that the article's subject has been written about in depth in published, WP:reliable sources which are not in any way connected to the subject. We require 2 or 3 such sources. If your article has dozens of sources which mention you in passing, that is a definite delete. Companies really have you over a barrel in this situation. You don't know where they are operating, they are usually unlicensed, and they exist solely to make money. So they tend to be less than honest. Avoid.--Quisqualis (talk) 20:37, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We're not going to recommend any companies that edit Wikipedia to you as most of them are either scammers or banned from Wikipedia. We also don't "verify" anything - that's on the sources you're supposed to be citing - and take a dim view of writing about oneself. We're not social media. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 20:35, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. You find the explanation obscure because you have the (unfortunately very common) misunderstanding that Wikipedia has anything at all to do with promoting oneself or contributing to one's online presence. It does not. It is an encylopaedia, which consists of neutrally written articles which summarize what reliable independent sources say about a subject, not what the subject says or wants to say. If you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then there could be an article about you: it would not belong to you, and would not necessarily say what you wanted it to say. Signed in, but cannot edit

Hi all - not sure what has happened here, but for at least the last 3 days I have been unable to edit here (or at Commons), even though I am signed in with my Hassocks5489 username, because the edit window shows "This IP address range has been globally blocked" and "This IP address has been blocked from editing Wikipedia" messages. This is only affecting my home PC; I'm writing this message on my phone, which is connecting to my home internet connection via WiFi. I looked at the various help links on the templates but got lost. Is there anything I can/need to do at my end to fix this? I'm not at all savvy about internet-related stuff, so please keep the explanations simple! Grateful thanks for any help, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:22, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:IP block exemption is what you need, User:Hassocks5489. Someone using the same IP address may have misbehaved on Wikipedia. Follow the instructions to resume editing on your PC.--Quisqualis (talk) 20:42, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks Quisqualis; I've submitted a request via that link. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:53, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the request was declined, but a combination of information provided by the admin and some Googling led me to my internet settings, where I found that open proxies were enabled (not sure how that happened!). I disabled that option, restarted and all seems normal again. How odd! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 22:06, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Hassocks5489, Wikipedia:Open proxies are fine for reading Wikipedia, but not allowed for editing, as abusive users will use them to obscure their IP address.--Quisqualis (talk) 01:07, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Could I buy an ad?

Instead of contributing could I buy an ad on Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:6010:BB00:5AA:31A7:E25B:3601:638D (talk) 20:46, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No. Wikipedia does not have paid advertising. RudolfRed (talk) 22:48, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You could buy an ad on another website that accepts advertising encouraging people to donate to the Wikimedia Foundation, but keep in mind that the WMF is rolling in excess cash and has no convincing demonstrated need for more money in 2022. I suggest that you donate your money to people who are genuinely hurting instead. Cullen328 (talk) 05:58, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

top grossing tours of all time

    Wikipedia,

I don't have an account and previously tried to edit on the top grossing tours of all time but my edit was removed by someone. Billy Joel In Concert tour is on the top grossing tours of the 2010s but not in the top 20 top grossing tours of all time. In addition on the top grossing tours of the 1980s is missing Genesis 1986-1987 Invisible Touch tour that grossed $60 million.

    Sincerely,
