Orbit (gum)
Orbit is a brand of sugarless chewing gum from the Wrigley Company. In the United States (where it was re-launched in 2001[1]), it is sold in brightly-colored cardboard boxes with the slogan "just brushed clean feeling," with 14 individually-wrapped pieces of gum per package. In the UK (where it was launched in 1977[2]), it is sold as a traditional long-stick gum.
In order to compete with Cadbury Adams's Trident White gum, Orbit White was released in 2001. Orbit White is a sugar-free candy-shell coated gum (known in the industry as "pellet gum") that contains baking soda to help remove tooth stains. Each piece is covered with green (spearmint), pink (bubblemint), or blue (peppermint) specks, and is packaged in blister packs of 12 pieces.[3]
In North America, Orbit television ads feature English actress Vanessa Branch with a catchphrase of "Fabulous!"
History
Orbit has been a U.S. brand since 1944. After World War II it was discontinued in 1946 but reappeared in the US in the 1977 as the first sugarfree bubble gum from the Wrigley Company before launching Extra gum. It was again relaunched in 2001 and is one of the fastest growing brands for Wrigley.
Americans during the Iran hostage crisis preferred Orbit's distinct foil-and-paper wrappers to write and pass notes to one another.
