Michael Hugh Mosley[1] (22 March 1957 – June 5-9 c. 2024)[2] was a British television journalist, producer, presenter, and writer, who has worked for the BBC since 1985, after graduating from medical school. He was a presenter of television programmes on biology and medicine and has regularly appeared on The One Show. Mosley was an intermittent fasting and low-carbohydrate diet advocate who has written books promoting the ketogenic diet. Mosley went missing on the Greek island of Symi on 5 June 2024, and was found dead on 9 June 2024.[3]

Early life and education

Michael Mosley was born in Calcutta, India, on 22 March 1957.[4] His father was a banker and his maternal grandfather an Anglican bishop.[5]

Mosley attended a boarding school in England from the age of seven.[5] He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at New College, Oxford, before working for two years as a banker in the City of London. He then decided to move into medicine, intending to become a psychiatrist, studying at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, now part of UCL Medical School.[6]

Career

Upon graduation from medical school, and having become disillusioned by psychiatry, Mosley joined a trainee assistant producer scheme at the BBC in 1985.[6]

Mosley produced a number of science programmes, including The Human Face, three series with Robert Winston, and the 2004 BBC Two engineering series Inventions That Changed the World hosted by Jeremy Clarkson.[7] He presented Blood and Guts, Medical Mavericks and The Story of Science for television, and was the subject of a television documentary, 10 Things You Need to Know about Losing Weight. He presented Make Me for BBC One. In April–June 2010 he produced and presented the television series The Story of Science: Power, Proof and Passion broadcast by BBC Two.[citation needed]

In 2011, Mosley made a series titled The Brain: A Secret History, on the history of psychology and neuroscience. During the series, while describing the methods that are being employed to identify the anomalies in brain structure associated with psychopathy, his personal test results revealed he himself had these candidate brain characteristics.[citation needed]

Mosley presented a two-part documentary in 2011, Frontline Medicine with episodes called "Survival" and "Rebuilding Lives". These programmes described the medical advances in the treatment of military personnel during the 10 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan and examined how these new techniques were being used in emergency medicine in civilian casualties in the United States and Great Britain.[citation needed]

Mosley's documentary The Truth About Exercise, first broadcast in 2012, highlighted how different patterns of exercise might help achieve health benefits, the danger of sitting for prolonged periods and revealed how certain genotypes are unable to gain significant improvements in aerobic fitness (VO2 max) by following endurance exercise programmes. His own genetic type can gain many of the benefits of exercise, primarily improved insulin response, through short, high-intensity training sessions as suggested by the research of Professor James Timmons.[8]

In January 2013, Mosley presented The Genius of Invention. In the documentary named The Truth About Personality, first aired on 10 July 2013, Mosley explored what science can tell people about optimism and pessimism and whether people can change their outlook.[9][10]

Mosley, along with a group of medical specialists, presented a documentary series titled The Diagnostic Detectives which aired in 2020. In the series, each programme is centred around the group of doctors who choose to tackle a patient's problem.[11][12]

In 2021, Mosley presented a three-part series, Lose a Stone in 21 Days for Channel 4. On the programme Mosley said that people can lose a stone (14lb, 6.4kg) in 21 days by calorie restriction to only 800 calories a day. This advice is considered dangerous by some medical experts and the programme received criticism on social media platforms.[13] Beat, a UK charity supporting those affected by eating disorders, wrote the following day that "the programme caused enough stress and anxiety to our beneficiaries that we extended our Helpline hours to support anyone affected and received 51% more contact during that time".[14]

Intermittent fasting and low-carbohydrate diet advocacy

Mosley promotes intermittent fasting and is a low-carbohydrate diet advocate.[15]

5:2 diet

Mosley is credited with popularising a form of intermittent fasting called the 5:2 diet through an episode of the BBC documentary series, Horizon called, Eat, Fast and Live Longer.[16][17][18] It was through this documentary that he learned about the 5:2 from scientist Mark Mattson who published a paper on the 5:2 with Michelle Harvie and 14 other scientists in 2011.[19][20][21] In the original trials, the 5:2 does not follow a particular food pattern, but instead focuses entirely on calorie content.[22]

In early 2013, Mosley published The Fast Diet with Mimi Spencer.[23][24]

The Fast 800 diet

Mosley advocates The Fast 800 Diet, a low-carbohydrate Mediterranean diet with intermittent fasting that follows a daily 800-calorie eating plan.[17] His book The Fast 800 Keto combines a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting.[25]

Mosley's The Fast 800 Keto advises a three-stage diet plan for weight loss: stage 1, a very low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet; stage 2, a reintroduction of carbohydrates with intermittent fasting; stage 3, a low-carbohydrate Mediterranean diet.[26] Mosley has stated that a downside to the ketogenic diet is that it is restrictive so his Fast 800 Keto solves this problem by gradually allowing carbohydrates back into the diet for a long-term low-carbohydrate Mediterranean diet.[26]

Red Pen Reviews noted that Mosley's book The Fast 800 Keto "scored weakly for scientific accuracy" but concluded that the diet "should cause weight loss and improve health in most people who have extra weight and/or type 2 diabetes, but some aspects of the diet may be unnecessary and make it harder to follow". The review also noted that Mosley's Fast 800 Keto is not a long-term ketogenic diet and the insistence on a low-carbohydrate intake for the long-term Mediterranean diet is not necessary.[26]

Awards and honours

In 1994, Ulcer Wars, Mosley's 16 May 1994 Horizon documentary, reported the link between Helicobacter pylori and gastric ulcers, discovered in 1983 by Australian scientists Robin Warren and Barry Marshall.[40][41] He was named Medical Journalist of the Year in 1995 by the British Medical Association.[6] In 1996, the programme was noted as one of the most important factors to influence British general practitioners' prescribing habits.[42][43]

In 2002, Mosley was nominated for an Emmy as an Executive Producer for The Human Face with John Cleese.[44]

In 2017 Mosley was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science by the University of Edinburgh.[1]

Personal life

Mosley was married to Clare Bailey, a GP; they had four children.[24][45] In a BBC documentary on sleep, Mosley revealed he had chronic insomnia.[46] He published Fast Asleep on the subject in 2019.[24]

Death

On 5 June 2024, Mosley was reported missing by his wife while they were on holiday on the Greek island of Symi.[47] Mosley and his wife had been at St Nicholas Beach (Greek: Άγιος Νικόλαος, romanizedAgios Nikolaos), and Mosley set off for a walk on his own at 13:30 EEST (UTC+03:00).[47] He had not taken his phone with him. That afternoon, the temperature reached 40 °C (104 °F).[48] Shortly before 14:00, he was captured on CCTV in the nearby coastal village of Pedi,[48] and later entering a mountainous path.[49]

Mosley's wife alerted authorities after he failed to return to their accommodation by 19:30. A search and rescue team including local people, local police, fire crews, and police from Athens used drones, and extensively searched the tracks and paths he might have taken on foot, with the search extending the following day.[50] On 7 June, a search dog, a helicopter, and boats were also being used in the search, along with 25 people, who included divers. The temperature was forecast to reach 37 °C (99 °F) that day.[48]

On the morning of 9 June 2024, four days after his disappearance, a body, presumed to be that of Mosley, was found near a fence on Agia Marina beach in Symi.[51][52]
