Music Question

Does anybody know what Bruce Springsteen album the song made famous by Manfred Man "Blinded by the light" was on? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.59.88.183 (talk) 00:09, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The song debuted in 1973 on Springsteen's first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.. More info can be found on the article for the song "Blinded by the Light". / edg 01:00, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's one of those rare songs where the cover version is hugely better than the original. DuncanHill 03:40, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You mean it sold better than the original. Whether it actually is better is in the ear of the listener. — Michael J 06:08, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Honda Civic commercial song

There's a Honda Civic commercial in which the voiceover asks if you remember the first time your parents left you in charge of the house and it shows the kids playing video games. Then it asks if you would do anything differently and it shows the kids throwing a party. Then it asks if you remember your first new car and it shows the kid (older now) walking out on his porch, picking up a magazine, and looking at his new Civic, and then shows clips of driving it etc. Then it asks if you could have a second chance would would you do differently and it shows the kid walking out on his porch, picking up a magazine, and he still has the Civic (ie he has no regrets about buying it). All the while there is a piano rock/emo song playing in the background and for the life of me I can't figure out who sings it. I would post a link to the video of the commercial, but I can't find it and it appears that the video has been removed from YouTube/Google video for copyright enfringement. Please, help me figure out what song is in the commercial.

It sounds like its Something Corporate/Jack's Mannequin (sp?) but thus far that has got me nowhere. Grant.alpaugh 06:28, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found an extended cut of the commercial, and it has MUCH clearer enunciation of the lyrics to the song.

Paint It, Black

Why does this song have a comma in its name? --Masamage 07:18, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Supposedly it started with a mistake by Decca records, with the comma making its debut on the original single. The reason it was added is unknown, but the mistake (if that's what it is) propagated to some (but not all) subsequent releases. The only sources I can find for this are a Keith Richards quote saying the label added it. / edg 08:00, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, interesting. That should be in the article; maybe I'll try to add it later, unless someone who knows more wants to. --Masamage 20:38, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BBC/Dr Who on hi-def disc?

Are there any plans for the BBC to bring the new Dr Who to high-def disc? (I'd prefer HD-DVD as it's region free). Has the BBC released any other shows on hi-def? --72.202.150.92 05:11, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's unlikely as the new Dr Who isn't filmed in high def. There's no benefit (other than storage capacity) for an HD release. Torchwood, however, is filmed in HD and could conceivably be released in an HD format. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.91.98.102 (talk) 17:55, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can you provide some citation that Dr Who isn't shot on HD? It's certainly not filmed, but it's not using SD video either. It has the same visual artifacts as HD video during night time scenes, when blue LEDs are recorded and when characters are running on screen. --24.249.108.133 21:32, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I recommend you hold of on buying a hi-def system. You don't want to be stuck with a HD-DVD system when eventually everything switches to Blu-ray. I seriously hope that last thing won't happen, but it's better to be safe than sorry. - Mgm|(talk) 20:27, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your opinion about Blu-Ray. But I have both systems and I prefer HD-DVD because it's region free. Hince, I want Dr Who on HD-DVd because I can buy it from UK retailers and play it in USA. --24.249.108.133 18:19, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

lord of the flies

i have 2 questions in "lord of the flies"

1. How does Golding "the writer" show that there are children of different ages and experience just by recording their spoken language?

2. Find examples in the novel of language which creates a strong sense of unpleasantness of life on the island?

please answer me as soon as possible thank you

Haboosh

Have you tried reading the book? I'm sure that is what your teacher would like you to do!--193.195.0.102 00:11, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
An excellent suggestion. The reader might also try Lord of the Flies, incidently I mentioned this book at work today - first time i've mentioned it in years. I'd say it's spooky but it isn't, it's just a coincidence. Either way both questions sound very simple. Different language will be used by older/more experience children and more infantile/naïve language by the younger children - that is unless the writer wanted to show off a younger child as bright/an older child as childish. Second question look for powerful unpleasant words, shouldn't be too hard. Good luck ny156uk 20:44, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Females voicing males

I was astounded to see that Naota from FLCL is voiced by Barbara Goodson. Look at her picture and then watch up to 1:00 of this FLCL episode-part (he's the 12 year old kid in the blue windbreaker). I just can't believe it.. is it really her? It sounds like a male.. how does she do that?! --ffroth 07:00, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can't view the video from where I am now but both her article here and her page at the IMDb confirm that she's the voice of this Naota person. It's not so outlandish, after all one of the most popular male animated characters of all time is voiced by a woman. Dismas|(talk) 07:16, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1-HF2 will begin only and only if freeman accepts the offer in hf1?

2-Are the episode's half life blue shift and etc different from halflife(which I have with counter strike)

And the same with HF2. Are episode,s 1 and 2 not included in the same versions.

3-How much memory does halflife 2take .

4-How long will it averagely take me to complete halflife2 (it took me 2months to clear hf1)

1. HL2 is an entirely separate game. You can play it regardless of the choice you made at the end of HL1. The game assumes that you took the G-Man's deal because, if you hadn't, there would be no game to play.
2. Blue Shift and Opposing force are expansions to HL1. They were originally sold separately but now come with HL1 if you get it on Steam. They allow you to play from the perspective of characters who are party to the events of HL1 ("The Black Mesa Incident"). Blue Shift lets you play as the base security guards and Opposing Force lets you play as a member of the US Marines that are sent to contain the incident by killing everything inside (including Gordon Freeman). Each are the same story, just a different perspective.
I'm not sure what your next question is asking but I'll give it a stab. Episodes 1 and 2 for HL2 are direct continuations of the story started in HL2 ("Episode zero"). Each picks up the exact moment in story where the previous left off. Episode 1 was a separate purchase from HL2. I'm pretty sure Episode 2 can be purchased separately but I wouldn't recommend it. Episode 2 was released last month as part of the "Orange Box" package that included HL2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2 for US$49. IMO Portal and Team Fortress 2 are each worth US$49 and should not be missed. If you buy the Orange Box and already have HL2 and Episode 1, you receive a coupon that you can give to a friend that they can trade in to get HL2 and Episode 1 for free.
3. Half-life_2 says that 256MB of RAM is the minimum requirement. More is better.
4. It's been a while, but I think Half Life 2 was about 25 hours worth of gameplay. How many weeks or months that takes depends on how many hours a day you can devote. Episodes 1 and 2 are about 7 hours of gameplay each. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.47.120.57 (talk) 17:19, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the billiard balls or the pigeon would dissappear once conjured. The magic (which works like physics do here) stipulate that by bringing those things here you had to either send something of equal mass to their original sopt or move the entire universe over, up, aside however far to get to them... which could have dire consequences and may only be possible if you have on of the most powerful known spells ever created hiding in your head. Even then you'd have to put yourself into a situation that the spell would have to go into self preservation mode and say itself. It's entertainingly complicated. The 'Peruvian Death Pepper' has been ascribed to the Rocoto post Garfield inclusion. From DeWitt's "The Chile Pepper Encyclopedia":
The rocotos are renowned for their pungency, and there is a Peruvian expression about them, "llevanta muertos", meaning they are hot enough to raise the dead. According to chile expert Dr. Jean Andrews, in the town of Huanta, Peru, rocotos are described as "gringo huanuchi", "will kill a gringo" They are highly aromatic and flavorful in addition to their heat. The ripe pods are used fresh because their thick flesh makes them difficult to dry. They are often stuffed with cheese or sausage then baked."

A hit song with sax solo?

Hi,I'm searching for a song from the 80s or perhaps even from early 90s. It is sung by a male, with different sax riffs are the most recognizable parts of the song.

they are like:

daadadadaa daaaa daadadadaa daadaa daadadadaa daaaa daadadadaa daadaa daadaa daadaa

d and a are not musical notes, but its like humming. This song still widely being played on shopping malls etc. The song is slightly fast, perhaps has bongos too and the saxs repeat after the singer finishes a stanza. And the song is not careless whisper by wham. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.201.75.148 (talk) 16:43, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Baker street by George Rafferty? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgwETZKNPZc that is a very famous sax solo and still widely played. The solo plays around 1.40 on this you-tube post (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgwETZKNPZc) - i'm terrible with turning dada into notes. -- ny156uk (talk) 16:49, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for answers. It is indeed baker street!. Iam amazed that you got it right it the first time. How did you guess it?.

It's one of the most played sax-solos I know so figured that would be worth a try, probably the first 'name the song' query i've answered where i've been right!! -- ny156uk (talk) 17:51, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just to point out, it's Gerry Rafferty not George. Sorry to rain on your parade, Ny :) --Richardrj talk email 17:58, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And for an extra 5 points, this [4] is also Gerry Rafferty. -- SaundersW (talk) 19:36, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the Fuhuabeihou (浮华背后) Series, is Luo Liang played by the same character throughout? Or is he replaced by a different actor after his plastic surgery?

In the Fuhuabeihou (浮华背后) Series, is Luo Liang played by the same character throughout? Or is he replaced by a different actor after his plastic surgery?

Some people say he just took out his shoulder pads and got a haircut, others say he is replaced by a different actor.

Thanks in advance!-- 207.195.247.110 (talk) 20:02, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Elusive Garys Mod 10

I am looking into buying garys mod, but everyone says 10 is the way to go. The only place so far to get it is steam, but steam only has garys mod 9 for download, where can I find and buy/download garys mod 10 without going to some shady site?

Steam is the only place you can buy Garry's Mod 10 -- no-one else will have it. It's available on its own here, for US$10 through Steam. You might have been confused because it's not called Garry's Mod 10, just Garry's Mod, but that is the 10th version.

Gmod requires a Source game to be installed (Half-life 2, Counter-strike Source, etc) so you can get it here packaged with Counter-strike.Froglars the frog (talk) 07:50, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Grendel's Father

In Beowulf, who is Grendel's father? Hrothgar said something along the lines of "he is of no threat to men" and later it seemed to imply that Hrothgar was Grendel's father. Is he? Who/what is?
