Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 86.140.128.200 (talk) at 08:25, 12 February 2010 (Errors in Did you know?: add). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 04:53 on 7 November 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article

The abbreviation IOC should not be used without stating what it is. Also, why is Sweden the only country mentioned for which there is no link to the corresponding article about the country's contribution to the Olympics? Neelix (talk) 01:27, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"with runner-up Yulia Tymoshenko stating that she will contest the result"

Copied from WT:ITN

Tymoshenko did not state that, has not said a word in public about the election. This sort of simplification is close to misinforming the readers... "fellow Tymoshenko party members protest" is a much better wording. — Mariah-Yulia • Talk to me! 12:19, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That part of the blurb should be pulled entirely: it is irrelevant to our elections piece if the loser is happy or not, except that we tend to post quicker if the opponent concedes defeat. Such discussion belongs in the article, where it can be treated at proper length. Physchim62 (talk) 12:24, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's been changed to "with members of runner-up Yulia Tymoshenko's party contesting the result" now. Including phrases like this may be good if it is to emphasize that we are not endorsing the legitimacy of the election—an argument that I think came up during the Iranian election some time ago. Ucucha 12:30, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, my initial error was brought to my attention at my talk page. I have changed it as Ucucha describes. I think it is important for us to state when results are contested in situations like this. If Tymoshenko makes a statement and concedes then we could drop it - Dumelow (talk) 12:34, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, not stating it might leave the reader the impression "all is well" in Ukrainian politics and that the transfer of power is going smoothly (like in let's say Sweden). — Mariah-Yulia • Talk to me! 12:51, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, I'll respect Mariah-Julia's call on this, as she can obviously follow the developments far better than most of us! For the record, I think it was the Romanian elections when we last had a debate on whether to post info about election complaints: the Iranian case was fairly straight-forward as there were people protesting in the streets and getting killed over it (I hope it doesn't come to that in Ukraine but, if it does, we'll probably post it). Physchim62 (talk) 13:08, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank god nobody expects that (annalist do not even predict mass protests)... in that sense Ukrainian politics is still a bit Swedish and not Iranian… — Mariah-Yulia • Talk to me! 13:23, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in Did you know?

"that according to Hindu mythology, goddess Savitri cursed her husband..." The goddess name is Saraswati, not Savitri. manya (talk) 08:08, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to the article, both names are used for the same goddess. Materialscientist (talk) 08:14, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"... that the Western Australian carnivorous plant Drosera derbyensis was first found by Allen Lowrie near the Boab Prison Tree just outside of Derby?" Please correct 'outside of' to 'outside'. 'Outside of' is poor grammar, and certianly not encyclopedic. 86.140.128.200 (talk) 08:25, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
