Lego Harry Potter: Years 1–4 is an upcoming video game in the Lego video game franchise, developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Warner Bros.[2] It is the first Lego Game to have animated blood. The game is based on the Lego Harry Potter line and its storyline will cover the first four books of the Harry Potter series: Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire.

Gameplay

Lego Harry Potter's gameplay is similar to that of most previous Lego games, with an emphasis on collecting and exploring, rather than the emphasis on combat used in Lego Indiana Jones 2 and Lego Batman: The Videogame. Casting spells is an integral part of the gameplay; few are available from the start, but more are unlocked as the player progresses. For example, the Wingardium Leviosa spell, which almost all characters can use, enables the player to lift and arrange Lego bricks, and the Immobulus spell can freeze other characters. Potion-making is another integral feature; potions can help the player complete levels or, if created incorrectly, have adverse side effects such as turning the player into a frog.

Like the previous Lego games, there are a large number of characters playable, up to 140. These include Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, as well as some unusual ones such as Fang, Dobby, Buckbeak and centaurs.[3] Some characters have different abilities, based on the skills of their book counterparts. For instance, Harry is a very good broomstick rider and he is able to perform tricks and shoot jinxes when he is on a broom, Hermione is the best character at casting spells, and Ron can use Scabbers to crawl into otherwise unreachable areas.[4][5]

The game will also employ the two player split-screen technique & Online support for PS3 & XBOX 360 was introduced in the Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues.[6][7]

News of the game's existence was leaked in March 2009[8], although rumours had been circulating since late 2008.[9] Warner Bros officially confirmed the game in June 2009[10] with a targeted release of spring 2010. The official website lists the game as coming June 2010, while Amazon.com shows an availability date of May 25.[11]

Trailers

A teaser trailer was released on the day of the game's official announcement.[12] In December 2009, a trailer comprised of scenes from the 'Year One' section of the game was released.[13] This was followed in February by a 'Year Two' vignette trailer.[14] In March, a 'Year Three' vignette trailer was released.[15]
