Malik (Urdu: ملک) is a clan of Hindu Jat, Muslim Jat and a few Sikh Jat, found majorly in Haryana and Pakistan and parts of Punjab.The Hindu Malik Jatt are spread al over Haryana though like most jats in Haryana, they are not majorly concerned with Hinduism and are have a very jat like lifestyle. Muslim Malik Jatt community is settled all over Pakistan and Sikh mainly in the Punjab province. The Malik are also known as the Ghatwala.They have descended from Mann Jats.They have been ferocious warriors in history, earning them the name Malik(leader).The Malik jat girls and boys are well known for their beauty and good looks in Haryana.Blonde looks are typical of Maliks.

History and origin

Malik (मलिक) or Malak (मलक) or Gathwala is gotra (clan) of Jats, The Mahabharata Tribe - Malika (मलिक) They are mentioned in the Geography of Mahabharata (VI.10.65)

तदैव मरधाश चीनास तदैव दश मालिकाः कषत्रियॊपनिवेशाश च वैश्यशूद्र कुलानि च (VI.10.65) The Mahabharata Tribe - Malika (मलिक) may be identified with Jat Gotra - Malik (मलिक) They are mentioned in the Markandeya Purana as people of the Central region of India. [1] The Gathwala are now designating themselves as Maliks, which is a title.[1]

  • Their original gotra is lalsaroha. Malik is an honour symbol given to their ancestor by king.In 12th century they assembled toghether under leadership of dada balla of village bhainwal kalan[biggest village of khap] and formed a group called as gathh AND NAMED THE KHAP AS GATHWALA KHAP

Distribution

They are numerically largest clan of Jats in Haryana state. Maliks are Jats mostly found in Sonepat and Jind district in Haryana.In Muzaffarnagar district there are 52 villages of Malik's Gotra. This area is well known as GATHWALA-KHAP. They are found majorily in Haryana. There are more than 760 villages of the Malik clan in Haryana . There are also several villages of the Ghatwala Maliks in Okara District of Pakistan. Almost all them originate from Sonepat.

Sherewala (Abohar) Largest group of villages of this khap is around big.gest village BhainswalKalan in Gohana tehsil of SONEPAT District of Haryana state numbering 84villages comprising three bahras,four athgamas and three chaugamas.

In Pakistan

Found in Okara District, almost all originally from Sonepat and Rohtak. Historically, they were known as Mullas (the unfortunate ones), but this term is no longer used.
