Thornbury is a district on the eastern edge of Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England on the border with the City of Leeds and located in the Bradford Moor ward and in the East Bradford parliamentary constituency. Thornbury is contiguous with Pudsey - part of the City of Leeds conurbation and borders Laisterdyke, and Fagley (Eccleshill Ward).

History

Thornbury was originally a distinct village but became part of Bradford in 1882.[1]

In Thornbury on Leeds Road there are some large former tramsheds and former bus depot[2][3] dating from when Bradford had its own tram, bus and trolleybus service.

Buffalo Bill staged a performance of his Wild West Show in Thornbury when touring England in 1903.[4]

Economy

Off Dick Lane in Thornbury is the Gallagher Leisure Park. In the Gallagher Leisure Park is the Odeon Leeds-Bradford, a 13 screen multiplex cinema, the Aagrah restaurant, Esporta health club,[5] a Travelodge and access to the Phoenix Park Golf Course.

Off Leeds Old Road in The Woodhall Retail Centre is a B&Q, Morrisons and Netto supermarkets and the Thornbury Medical Centre. Also on Leeds Old Road is the Thornbury Centre, a conference centre, library and church opened in March 1999, built on the site of the demolished St. Margaret's Church with £1.19m funding from the Millennium Commission.[6][7]

On Gain Lane is British Bakeries' Bradford bakeries and the new headquarters of Wm Morrison Supermarkets.[8]

The Territorial Army's Thornbury Barracks are actually in the Woodhall area of Pudsey, Leeds.[9]

Education

On the edge of old Thornbury village is Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College. Thornbury has a public lending library in Leeds Old Road.[10]

Transport

The main roads through the area are the A647 Leeds Road, the B6381 Leeds Old Road, Gain Lane and Dick Lane. Leeds Road, Leeds Old Road and Dick Lane meet at Thornbury roundabout, the biggest roundabout in Yorkshire.[11] Thornbury is served by First Bradford's 15, 72, 709, 710, 714, X6, and X11 services.[12]

Sport

To the east of Thornbury is the Phoenix Park Golf Course.[13]

Notable people

The poet and novelist Joolz Denby lives in Thornbury. As does the stunning Miss Kirby who likes reading about bats and stuff on wiki
