Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Wikipedia:Twinkle and Teahouse

Hello again!

I trust you are well. Since our last communication I have on several occasions attempted to follow your advice and activate Twinkle, but to no avail. It has now dawned on me that it won't work because I have Internet Explorer 8. I suppose that apart from buying a new computer – which I can't afford (mine's aged 12 years, but I have upgraded to XP02) – there is nothing I can do about it.

Today, I have discovered Teahouse. Looks great. Posted a query. All the best, Gareth Griffith-Jones (talk) 12:29, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi! Is there a reason that you are unable to download and use Firefox? I also have Internet Explorer on my computer, but I opt to use Firefox and it works quite a bit better for me. Hope you are well! Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 15:44, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You are a star. I have successfully down-loaded Mozilla Firefox, and not only do I have Twinkle, I have a PC that I don't recognise. It is so fast. See my tonight's posting on Teahouse... it is all thanks to you, Cindy. With best wishes, Gareth Griffith-Jones (talk) 01:49, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Postscript: I have just noticed that you have changed the style of your signature. I liked the previous one. Gareth Griffith-Jones (talk) 01:49, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to the April Wikification Drive

Biography subject

I'd like to ask your help in creating a biography article on reporter Bob Wyrick. I've got some COI in the subject so I don't want to touch it, but I'm sure the fellow's notable. I did a little looking and wrote some very rough notes but haven't dug very far. I'd appreciate it if you could take a look to see if you think there's a stub or an article in it. Either way I'll leave it alone except for this request. Cloveapple (talk) 08:16, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • As an award-winning author and journalist, I think there's certainly enough information to support developing an article about him. Just make sure not to focus on articles simply because he wrote them. A journalist doesn't inherit notability by reporting about notable individuals or events. Focus on the honors and awards received for the specific work for which he has done. Bring information and content to the article that supports Wyrick individually as a notable person. Sometimes, it gets a bit tricky writing articles about journalists, because there is often quite a bit of information to be found with his name attached. That said, the journalist is generally not the notable subject. Just work on the draft in a subpage of your userspace. Then when it is ready and fully supported through significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of Wyrick and his associates and employers, ask for a review before moving it to the mainspace. Feel free to contact me at any time if you need help with anything. I'm happy to jump in and do whatever you need. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 21:54, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks for the excellent advice. I've created or worked on other articles but I'm not comfortable working on this one because of the COI issues that are involved for me. I don't think I can give the article the neutrality it requires. I asked you because I've seen you working on various biographies and thought you might have an interest in at least a stub. GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

The Tea Leaf - Issue Two

Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.
Springtime means fresh tea leaves...
  • First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
  • Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
  • Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
  • Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.

You are receiving The Tea Leaf after expressing interest or participating in the Teahouse! To remove yourself from receiving future newsletters, please remove your username here. -- Sarah (talk) 21:36, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
