John and Edward Grimes (born 16 October 1991 in Dublin, Ireland) are an Irish pop duo. They are identical twins and perform under the name Jedward. Widely known for their blond quiffs, the twins first appeared as John & Edward on the sixth series of The X Factor in 2009, generating a phenomenon described as "the Jedward paradox".[1] They finished sixth[2] and are now managed by Louis Walsh, who was their mentor during the show.[3][4]

Jedward's debut single "Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)", featuring Vanilla Ice, was released on 1 February 2010. They first performed the song as a duet with Vanilla Ice at the 2010 National Television Awards on 20 January.[5] Released by Sony Music UK, it reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the Irish Singles Chart.[6][7] Having only had a one-single deal, Jedward were dropped by Sony Music UK on 16 March,[8][9] but signed to Universal Music Ireland on a three-album deal the following day.[10] They then released their second single, a cover of Blink-182's "All the Small Things", on 16 July and their debut studio album Planet Jedward on 26 July.[11] Planet Jedward reached number one on the Irish Albums Chart and number 17 on the UK Albums Chart. It was also certified double platinum in Ireland and platinum in Northern Ireland.[12]

On 11 February 2011, Jedward won the Irish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 on The Late Late Show with their entry single "Lipstick". They consequently represented Ireland at the contest in Düsseldorf, progressing through the second semi-final on 12 May, and performed at the final on 14 May 2011, achieving eighth place.[13] "Lipstick" was released as the first single released from their second album Victory. Both "Lipstick" and the following single "Bad Behaviour" reached number 1 in the Irish Singles Chart, while Victory also went to number 1 in the Irish Albums Chart.[14]

In August/September 2011, Jedward participated in Celebrity Big Brother 2011, finishing in third place.[15]

For the second time in a row, Jedward entered the Irish Eurovision national final and on 24 February won both the jury and public vote and will be representing Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan with their entry "Waterline".[16]

Life and career

Early Years

Identical twin brothers John Paul Henry Daniel Richard Grimes and Edward Peter Anthony Kevin Patrick Grimes were born in Dublin, to teacher Susanna and computer expert John[17] and were raised in Rathangan with their brother, law student Kevin.[18] John is ten minutes older than Edward.[17] John and Edward's first school was Scoil Bhríde National School in Rathangan. They then attended King's Hospital School for four years, but were constantly bullied for standing out from the rest and their love of pop music,[19] before being moved to the Dublin Institute of Education. The twins competed in school talent shows during their school years and were inspired by Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. John and Edward were also members of the Lucan Harriers Athletic Club and Dundrum South Dublin atletics club and have competed in several Irish athletic tournaments.[20] In addition, they briefly worked as games testers for Xbox 360 format holder Microsoft and support football clubs Newcastle United and Celtic.[21]

The X Factor

In 2009, the twins auditioned in Glasgow as a group for the sixth series of The X Factor, under the name John & Edward. [22][23] Despite being described by judge Simon Cowell as "not very good and incredibly annoying", the twins were put through to bootcamp, then made it to the Judges Houses stage where Louis Walsh selected them for the final 12.[24]

The twins' inclusion in the final 12 was a controversial decision, due to their lack of experience,[25] however mentor Louis Walsh stood by them, saying "I don't know how people can hate two nice young kids from Ireland. They've been edited really badly and come across as the people everyone loves to hate... but they're just raw, naïve and innocent and they have the potential to be really good."[26]

John and Edward became known for their unpolished but enthusiastic performances[27], famously including a version of Britney Spears' Oops!... I Did It Again, with the twins reenacting the "Titanic" monologue.[28] It was during the X Factor that fans of the duo gave them the nickname Jedward, which was popularised by the press.[29] Despite their inexperience, they only made it to the bottom two twice, the first time winning the sing-off against Lucie Jones, the second time being voted off in sixth place, in favour of eventual series runner-up Olly Murs.[30]

Planet Jedward

After their departure from the X Factor, Jedward, now officially performing under that name, were signed to Modest! Management, however it was later announced that Louis Walsh had reached "an amicable agreement" with Modest!, which allowed him to take the twins on.[31] From February until April 2010, they performed on the X Factor Live tour, where they were credited with the boost in demand for tickets, that led to an extension in the tour run.[32]

Jedward signed a £90,000 one-single contract with Sony Music in January 2010,[33] and shortly after their debut single "Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)" was release, a mashup of "Under Pressure" and "Ice Ice Baby", with Vanilla Ice contributing guest vocals. The song debuted at number one on the Irish Singles Chart and number 2 on the UK Singles Chart.[33] On March Jedward's Sony contract was culminated, but the following day Universal Music Ireland signed them on a three-album contract.[34]

In April 2010, Jedward began their first solo tour, a 27-date tour of Ireland called the Planet Jedward Tour, extended, due to popular demand, with a second 43-date leg in the UK and Ireland.vThe Irish Independent rated the tour positively, saying that "Jedwardmania is right up there with Beatlemania."[35]

In July 2010, Jedward appeared at T4 on the Beach in Weston-super-Mare. During a performance of "Ghostbusters", Edward fell and tore ligaments in his left knee. [36], which eventually required corrective surgery.[37]

Jedward second single "All the Small Things", a cover of the Blink-182 song, was released in July 2010 and peaked at number 21 on the Irish charts and number 6 on the UK Indie Chart

In July 2010, Jedward released their debut album Planet Jedward, comprising of covers of a selection of pop, rock and rap songs. It which went straight to number one on the Irish Albums Chart and number 17 on the UK Albums Chart.[38][39].

Later in July, the twins appeared on the Channel 4 reality show Big Brother and performed "All the Small Things" in the garden as part the housemates' task to "ignore the obvious".[40][41][42][43]

In August 2010, Jedward appeared in their own ITV2 documentary, entitled Jedward: Let Loose, a three-part series in which they moved out of their home for ten days. Jedward: Let Loose covered the launch of their debut album Planet Jedward and also documented Edward's injury at T4 on the Beach and the production of the music videos for "Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)" and "All the Small Things".[44] In September, they appeared in OMG! It's Jedward!, a one-hour special on RTE, taking a similar fly-on-the-wall look at the twins.[45]

Eurovision, Celebrity Big Brother and Victory

In April 2011, Jedward began their second tour, the Bad Behaviour Tour, with a series of dates across Ireland.[46]

In February 2011, Jedward won the Irish Eurovision selection competition Eurosong with their third single "Lipstick". The song peaked at number one in Ireland and later charted in 10 other European countries. Jedward successfully qualified from the second Eurovision semi-final, eventually finishing in eighth place.[47]

Jedward performed in front of an audience of 60,000 people at College Green in Dublin City ahead of a speech by visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.[48]

The twins entered the Celebrity Big Brother house in August 2011, eventually coming in third place.[49]

The duo's next single "Bad Behaviour" was released in July and reached number one in the Irish charts[50]. This was followed two weeks later by their second album Victory, consisting entirely of original tracks. A new version of Planet was released by the German branch of Universal Music in July, featuring a mix of tracks from the 2010 album and new songs from Victory.[51] The third single from Victory, Wow Oh Wow was released in August 2011, with a music video featuring their Celebrity Big Brother]] housemate Tara Reid

In August 2011, the twins began the Carnival Tour with eight dates across Ireland.[52] In September Jedward played their first European tour, with dates in Sweden and Germany[53], followed by a UK tour.[54]

In December, Jedward starred in the pantomime Jedward and the Beanstalk, a musical comedy version of the fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk. Staged at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, all sessions sold out.[55]

Eurovision again and Young Love

In January 2012, Jedward embarked on the European leg of their Victory Tour, playing in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Estonia, followed by Irish dates.[56]

In February, Jedward again won Eurosong, ensuring their place representing Ireland at Eurovision with their song Waterline.

In January and March, the twins recorded new songs for their third album, which they later announced would be titled Young Love, also the name of an album track. The album is due to be released on 1 June 2012.[57]

In May, Jedward released charity single and "unofficial" Irish Euro 2012 song Put The Green Cape On. With lyrics by RTÉ 2fm DJ Colm Hayes, the song is a reworking of Lipstick. All proceeds from the single go to Irish children's charity the ISPCC.[58]

Jedward were one of five acts bidding to represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Germany with their entry "Lipstick".[59][60][61] On 11 February 2011, they won the national selection, beating runner-up Nikki Kavanagh by two points.[13] On 12 May, Jedward performed in the second semi-final in Dusseldorf, and were voted through to the final, which took place on 14 May. They finished in 8th position overall, with 119 points which is Ireland's best result since 2000. They also won the Marcel Bezençon Artistic Award as voted for by the 43 event commentators.

After the contest, "Lipstick" was released digitally across Europe, where it charted in many countries such as Belgium, Sweden, Germany and most notably Austria where it peaked at number 3. The song also peaked at number 8 in the South Korea's international artists' chart.[62] "Lipstick" had featured in a Hyundai advertising campaign in South East Asia.[63]

Since leaving X Factor, Jedward have been involved with many advertising campaigns in the UK and Ireland.

In 2010, Jedward fronted an advertising campaign for Irish fast food chain Abrakebabra.[69] Following this they helped relaunch the Shake 'n' Vac brand for Glade alongside original Shake 'n' Vac actress Jenny Logan, in a modern day remake of the popular 1980's advert. [70]

Jedward have also fronted advertising campaigns for East Midlands Trains[71] , Rowntree's Randoms[72], Nintendo DS game Dragon Quest IX[73], the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine tour[74], Disney Universe[75] and a Travel Supermarket commercial with comedian Omid Djalili[76]. The latter was later banned after the UK [77] Advertising Standards Authority ruled that the advert was misleading.

In 2011 they fronted an advertising campaign for mobile network 3 Ireland, including their own Jedward-branded mobile phone. [78]

After the X Factor, Jedward have made regular appearances on Irish, UK and European television.

Since March 2010, Jedward have been series regulars on the comedy panel show Celebrity Juice. Each week they appear in a pre-recorded VT called "Keith vs Jedward" in which they compete against host Keith Lemon in various tasks.[79]

In August 2010 they starred Jedward: Let Loose, a three-part fly-on-the-wall series for ITV2, which saw John and Edward leaving home while also launching their debut album and filming a music video.[80] In September 2010, RTÉ aired a one hour documentary entitled "OMG It's Jedward". It followed the twins on the promotional tour for the release of their album Planet Jedward. Two months after the show aired, it was released on DVD, and became the third best-selling music DVD of the year in Ireland.[81] In 2011, OMG It's Eurovision, a 30 minute Eurovision, special aired. It documented the twins as they prepared to represent Ireland in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest.[82]

In 2011 Jedward featured as housemates in Celebrity Big Brother, the first Big Brother series on Channel 5. They came in third place on the series[83] , and famously formed a strong friendship with fellow housemate actress Tara Reid[84]. Jedward returned to the 2012 series of Celebrity Big Brother for a special task where they played "cheeky cherubs". [85]

OMG – Jedward's Dream Factory aired on TRTÉ for 10 days from Christmas Day 2011. The show saw the twins grant the wishes of Irish youngsters.[86] A second series has been commissioned for 2012.

In January 2012, Jedward starred in episode one of Channel 5 show Celebrity Wedding Planner. The twins were given the task of organising the wedding for young couple Beulah and James.[87]

In February 2012, the duo fronted a new CBBC show, called Jedward's Big Adventure. The twins acted as tour guides around several famous sites across the UK and attempted to lead a tour of genuine visitors.[88]

Reactions

Jedward have been subjects of commentary on social networking websites and in the media.[99] Many celebrities have also commented on the Jedward phenomenon.[100] Their fans include Peaches Geldof,[101] Pixie Lott, Westlife[102] and Robbie Williams.[103] Taoiseach Brian Cowen also backed the singers,[104] while Leona Lewis has said that she worries about them.[105][106] Others have openly criticised them, with Liam Gallagher stating: "How do you not smack them? I know all about annoying fucking brothers, but nobody comes close to them. What the fuck is happening to British music? And what are those things on their heads?"[107] Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor have both expressed their opinions about Jedward. On 6 November 2009, Taylor opined on BBC News that "They're not good singers. But you know... eight-year olds love them... you know there's nothing wrong with that – it's entertainment",[108] while in week 6 of the X Factor live shows, when May and Taylor were the finalists' celebrity mentors, May told them "You have something, you really do have something." He also said that "People love them or hate them, that's always a good sign. If they're indifferent then forget it. Some people love you, some people hate you – you got something going for you."

Politicians in both Ireland and the UK have also made their feelings about Jedward heard. The two leading British political parties, Labour and the Conservatives, each released campaign posters parodying the twins.[109][110] Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown came under fire in November 2009 for describing Jedward as "not very good" and later apologised for doing so.[111][112] Following this, Walsh stated "So Gordon Brown and Simon Cowell both have something in common: neither of them know what the public want." Current Prime Minister David Cameron admitted that he enjoyed watching The X Factor and that Jedward were his favourite act. Cameron also bought a t-shirt with their faces on it.[111][113][114][115] The Irish Independent called Jedward "tone-deaf twins", even though the pair were voted more popular than The Beatles in a teenage poll.[116]

Awards

Towards the end of 2009, John & Edward were nominated for "Funniest Double Act" at the Loaded Laftas Awards, competing with 6 Music comedy duos Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, and presenters Adam and Joe,[117] but lost out to Reeves and Mortimer.[118] In 2011, Jedward were nominated again, this time in the category of "Funniest TV Personality"[119]

At the end of 2009, Jedward were placed third in BBC Three's The Most Annoying People of 2009 following "the overexposure they received during their time on The X Factor". In The Most Annoying People of 2010, they were placed second (behind the England football team) for "becoming successful and being everywhere on TV".[120]

The Irish Tourism "Apology for Jedward" commercial won a silver award in the Best Single Promotion category at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.[121] A year later, Jedward were awarded the Marcel Bezençon Artistic Award – as voted by commentators – when they took part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Germany.[122]

In early 2012, OMG – Jedward's Dream Factory was nominated for an IFTA award.[123]
