Bridges and tunnels across the Yangtze River

The Nanjing Dashengguan Yangtze River Bridge under construction in November 2009.
At Yibin in Sichuan Province, the River Min merges into the Yangtze and broadens the river, which becomes known in Chinese as Chang Jiang or the "Long River". Above the confluence with the Min, the Yangtze is known as the Jinsha or Gold Sands River. Pictured is the Jinsha River Bridge at Yibin, upstream from the Yibin Yangtze River Bridge.

The bridges and tunnels across the Yangtze River provide important means of transportation across China's longest and largest river. They form a vital part of the country's road and rail network. With the "Long River" bisecting China proper from west to east, virtually every major north-south bound highway or railway must cross the Yangtze. Until the completion of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge in 1957, there were no crossings across the main stretch of the Yangtze from Yibin to the river mouth in Shanghai, a distance of 2,884 kilometres (1,792 mi). Since then, there have been 60 bridges and three tunnels built, the overwhelming majority constructed since 1990. They reflect a broad array of bridge designs and, in many cases, represent significant achievements in modern bridge engineering. Several rank among the world's suspension, cable-stayed and arch bridges as well as the world's highest and tallest bridges.

History

The railway level of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge.

The Yangtze River forms a major geographic barrier dividing northern and southern China. For millennia, travelers crossed the Yangtze by ferry. In the first half of the 20th century, rail passengers from Beijing to Guangzhou and Shanghai had to disembark, respectively, at Hanyang and Pukou, and cross the river by steam ferry before resuming journeys by train. After the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, a dual-use road-rail bridge, was built with Soviet assistance from 1955 to 1957. The second bridge across the river was a single-track railway bridge built upstream in Chongqing in 1959. The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, also a road-rail bridge, was the first bridge to cross the lower reaches of the Yangtze, in Nanjing. It was built after the Sino-Soviet split, from 1960 to 1968, and did not receive foreign assistance. The Zhicheng Road-Rail Bridge followed in 1971 and then the Chongqing Road Bridge in 1980. Bridge-building slowed in the 1980s before resuming in the 1990s and accelerating in the first decade of the 21st century. The Jiujiang Yangtze River Bridge was built in 1992 as part of the Beijing–Jiujiang Railway. A second bridge in Wuhan was completed in 1995. By 2005, there were a total of 56 bridges and one tunnel across the Yangtze River between Yibin and Shanghai. These include some of the longest suspension and cable-stayed bridges in the world on the Yangtze Delta: Jiangyin Suspension Bridge (1385m, opened in 1999), Runyang Bridge (1490m, opened 2005), Sutong Bridge (1088m, opened 2008). The rapid pace of bridge construction has continued. The city of Wuhan now has six bridges and one tunnel across the Yangtze. About a dozen other bridges are now under construction.

In the upper reaches of the Yangtze above Yibin, the Jinsha (Gold Sands), Tongtian, and Tuotuo sections of the river are narrower and bridges are more numerous.

Notes

  1. ^ Order of Crossing (Ord.) - The order in which the bridge or tunnel is located on the river, ascending from the river mouth in Shanghai. Multiple bridges or tunnels that form a single river crossing are counted as a single crossing. (e.g. The Shanghai Yangtze River and Tunnel which connect the south bank with two islands near the river mouth, will eventually form one bridge-tunnel complex across the river.) Parallel bridges at the same location are counted as separate crossings. (e.g. The Chongqing Shibanpo Bridge, originally built in 1980, is counted separately from a return bridge built next to it in 2006).
  2. ^ City - The city, county or urban district connected by the bridge.
  3. ^ Province / Municipality (Prov. Municp.) - The province or municipality in which the bridge or tunnel is located.
  4. ^ Construction Began (Const. Began) - The year in which construction of the bridge or tunnel began.
  5. ^ Began Operation (Began Oper.) - The year in which the bridge or tunnel entered into operation.
  6. ^ Total Length - The full length of the bridge or tunnel complex, including the main span and entry ramps.
  7. ^ Main Bridge Length - The length of the bridge over the river. This excludes the length of ramps leading up to the bridge, which on some bridges can be several kilometer in length.
  8. ^ Widest Span - This refers to the longest distance between two piers on the bridge. This length is longer on suspension and cable-stayed bridges than on beam bridges.
  9. ^ Type - The type of crossing: arch, beam, cable-stayed, suspension, truss or tunnel.
  10. ^ Route - The road, highway, or railway that cross the river with the bridge or tunnel.
  11. ^ The Chongming-Qidong Bridge only connects Chongming Island and Qidong on the north bank of the river. This bridge, together with the Shanghai Yangtze Bridge and Tunnel to the south, forms one crossing near the river's mouth.
  12. ^ The Shanghai Yangtze Bridge connects only the Changxing and Chongming Islands. This bridge, together with the Chongming-Qidong Bridge to the north and the Shanghai Yangtze Tunnel to the south, forms one crossing near the river's mouth.
