Design and Theme

The hotel features opulent interiors that combine select oriental touches within a classic European theme. The total look, created using choice materials, is the result of many months of research. Several kinds of marble have been meticulously chosen for different areas of the hotel: marble enhanced with sandblasted patterns, sourced mainly from Spain and Portugal, is used in the guest bathrooms. Italian rosa aurora, a fine pink variety, adds colour to the main entrance. In the lobby, regent white marble combined with dark serpentine green from Carrera, Italy, is used for the floors, and smooth perlato svevo adorns the walls adjacent to the grand staircase.

Carefully selected elements have been utilised to achieve the Shangri-La elegance. The solid timber handrails for the grand staircase were specially crafted in Thailand. Brazilian mahogany, with its warm colour and beautiful grain, was crown-cut to bring out special details in the cabinetwork.

Art Collection

The hotel contains more than 770 chandeliers and 900 artworks, including the world's largest indoor Chinese silk mural, The Great Motherland of China, which measures 16 storeys tall and consists of 250 panels of Chinese silk. It is displayed in the hotel atrium and can be viewed from Levels 41 to 56.

This masterpiece of an expansive landscape of China was diligently painted by 40 artists from the Beijing Arts and Crafts Research Institute for six months.

Media Reviews

National Post, Canada’s national newspaper, describes the hotel’s lobby as “a revelation, with a 130-year-old banyan tree anchoring the bar, and dozens of Austrian crystal chandeliers hanging overhead." [3]

“This Shangri-La property ‘gets it’ and offers the best of both worlds, luxurious accommodation and flawless service,” Yahoo USA reports. [4]
