Saint Bede's School is a mixed comprehensive secondary school in the English town of Redhill, Surrey. It was opened in 1976 as a girls' middle school but now has over 1800 male and female pupils aged 11–18 (Years 7–13), with around 400 students in the sixth form. Classes have an average of 28 pupils. The Schools ability's In the most recent Ofsted inspection, the school was graded as "good" [1] and is a dual Specialist Music College and ICT College status.[2] The government are considering giving the school the ability to become an academy school, meaning that the school may have the option to choose how they spend their money.

History

Formerly known as Bishop Simpson Church of England Girls School, St Bede’s School opened in September 1976 as a joint Anglican and Roman Catholic school and later included free churchs on its governing body. It claims to be the first such fully ecumenical school in the world.[3][4][5]

Building works

Between 1988 and 1999 the school underwent large scale building works to bring the school together on its present site, and to create new facilities for a library, ICT and careers. In 2004 a new arts centre was opened and in 2006 a sports hall was opened.[5]

In September 2011 an extension of the main building containing six new class rooms, which was built to replace the temporary huts (which were in place due to part of the main building being removed due to structural reasons), was opened. Construction is due to begin on two small halls, attached to the main PE block, in January 2012 with the building completed by October of the same year.[citation needed]

Academics

In the latest Ofsted inspection in September 2012, the school was graded as "good" [1] and was made a dual Specialist Music College and ICT College status.[2] The drama department have recently performed 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the Shakespeare Schools festival in the Leatherhead Theatre and at the school. St Bede's has a large creative arts building which teaches: art, dance, design and technology, drama, food and textiles, music and photography.

In the most recent results released in January 2013, 65% of its students received 5 good GCSEs.[citation needed]
