Virgo (♍) is the sixth astrological sign in the Zodiac. It spans the 150-180th degree of the zodiac, between 152.75 and 180 degree of celestial longitude. Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits this area on average between August 22nd to September 22nd, and under the sidereal zodica, the sun currently transits the constellation of Virgo from September 17 to October 17. Individuals born during these dates, depending on which system of astrology they subscribe to, may be called Virgos[2] or Virgoans.[3]
Decans
In astrology, a decan is said to be the ensign for a set of days within the heliocentric phase of Virgo. Each paradigm has its own planetary liaison. All of this has to do with what planet is affecting the sun's path at the time.
Decan I: August 24 - September 3 (Sovereign: Mercury)"sociable and friendly, especially when compared to the Virgos born under the other Decans."
Decan II: September 4 -September 13 (Sovereign: Saturn)"blessed with great practicality and stability."
Decan III: September 14 - September 22 (Sovereign: Venus)"will have a softer disposition, and would be slightly more versatile than the other Virgo borns."[4]
Associations
In astrology, a planet's domicile is the zodiac sign over which it has rulership. The planet said to be ruler of Virgo, or those associated with Virgins, is Mercury,[5] but Ceres has been strongly suggested[by whom?] as its modern ruler. Mercury is also said to have exaltation in Virgo, making it the only planet to have both domicile and exaltation in the same zodiac sign, and making Virgo the only zodiac sign in which the same planet has both domicile and exaltation.
The constellation of Virgo is representative of many identities, all related to maidens, purity and fertility. She was originally associated to Dike, also known as Justice, daughter of Zeus and Themis, who was once the Mistress of All-Divine Order and Law prior to the Olympians. Dike initially lived among mankind but withdrew when they no longer upheld justice.
In Greek mythology, too, there is a similar theme. Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, had been abducted and taken to the underworld by Hades. In revenge her mother ruined the harvests, the earth became infertile and the people were starving. Zeus was forced to issue a decree stating that Persephone should spend only a short time each year in the underworld, and when she was released Demeter permitted Nature to resume its natural course.
