Asia's Next Top Model (abbreviated as AsiasNTM or "AsNTM") is a reality television show of Top Model Franchise, in which a number of women compete for the title of Asia's Next Top Model and a chance to start their career in the modeling industry. The show will feature aspiring models from the entire Far East region, including South Asia subcontinent.

The show was initially set to launch in mid-2012 on Ice-TV, after a deal was arranged with CBS for a Pan-Asian version.[2][3][4] The casting process began in March 28, 2012 and was scheduled to end on May 5 of the same year. Later, the deadline was extended to May 21. Each season, the show is produced and filmed in a separate location of the Asian world.

On April 11, it was publicly revealed that Nadya Hutagalung would take on the role of Head Judge and Host of the series.[1] Fashion director Daniel Boey, fashion photographer Todd Anthony Tyler, and model Joey Mead King took secondary roles as judges.[5] Around early October, STAR World and Channel 8 introduced the 14 finalists for season one, from 13 countries in South, Southeast and East Asia. The show was initially scheduled to premiere on November 4, 2012. However, the global premiere on STAR World was pushed back to November 25 due to monetary problems.[6] The winner of the first cycle was 27 year old Jessica Amornkuldilok from Thailand.

The castings for season two took place from June 24, 2013 to August 25, 2013.

Search

An extensive online search took place for the selection process. Models of Asian descent were encouraged to apply, but were required to speak and write in perfect English. All applicants were required to be between the ages of 18-27 and be at least 5'7, which follows the same format as the American counterpart of the show. Girls who previously participated in a national Top Model franchise could still apply for Asia's Next Top Model as long as they were not the winner, and were not professional models or endorsing any product or brand.

Link with Vietnam's Next Top Model

For the first season of the show, Vietnam's Next Top Model was appointed for scouting aspiring models throughout Vietnam. Thùy Trang Nguyễn, a fourth-placed contestant from the second season of the show, made it into the final round and represented Vietnam in the main competition.[7]

Differences between ANTM and AsNTM

There are a few key differences between this series and its American counterpart. While the height standards are the same as the American version (at least 5'7"), they aren't as heavily enforced, as some girls have been allowed to enter despite being slightly under the cut-off. The judges are more heavily involved in the challenges and photo shoots, also providing more constructive criticism to the girls, also acting as means of support if needed and generally providing more help. There is also the introduction of a 'mentor' for the girls, Joey Mead King, who helps coach the girls in various aspects of the modelling industry and acts as a general assistant to the girls during the photo shoots and challenges.

Controversy

According to some crew members and judges, Daniel Boey included, Ice-TV did not pay them for their work on the show. Many crew members stated that they were not hired to work on a second season. Ice-TV stated that they were not able to hire them due to a withdrawal from two European sponsors.[11] Daniel Boey explained that this was the reason for his departure from the show. Ice-TV was replaced by activeTV as the production company for the show's second season.
