Almost to Welcome to the team. I'm the newest and least experienced tool-admin and want to do things right. Our guide says, "If the user has not stated in their confirmation diff that they have read and agree to comply with the guide and the WMF privacy policy, the user should be asked to confirm this before the account is created for them." As as sysop, i know you have read the privacy policy but please acknowledge having read the Request an account/Guide (even though some of it is out-of-date since the move from toolserver to wmflabs).   • Join the ACC mailing list as described here. It is another multi-step process to verify identity because of the private data that is occasionally discussed on the list. All ACC tool users must subscribe to the list because notices and policy and procedure changes are sent to the list.
  • Join us on IRC in the channel #wikipedia-en-accounts connect. You'll be taken to an unregistered channel at first. Once again, a channel moderator will have to verify your ID again before you get into the channel.

Bio 345 Wiki Page: YVR SUSTAINABILITY

Hello,

I am currently starting a subsection on YVR about Sustainability with my partner Kaylerz. I understand that the POV has to be neutral, however it it proving hard to find anything on YVR sustainability not written by YVR. I will keep looking, however, I am allowed to use some information by YVR right?

Hi Karolina7. Some information can be sourced to the subject of an article, yes - but there are restrictions. The guidelines restrict you to neutral and uncontroversial statements (so you can't, for example, repeat a company's claim that they are the "only company in the Western hemisphere to use this technology"). In addition, the article must still be based primarily on secondary or tertiary sources - you can't get away from the fact that you need independent sources for an article to stand up, although if you're expanding the existing YVR article, there are already a substantial collection of such sources in place. Generally speaking, though, if the only source of a piece of information is the subject of the article, one should be very wary of including that information in Wikipedia - just one secondary source like a magazine article or academic paper is preferable to thirty pages from the company's website or press office. A YVR page with many sections already exists and I am wondering if it will be okay for us to add our section to it. We would prefer to add to the YVR page than make a separate whole neW article for YVR sustainability. I am also wondering, if our page is a subsection on a larger page, can we still use pictures? Cesare Attolini Page

It would appear that a brand page I had been using for research has been deleted, namely that of Cesare Attolini. I did not create the page myself but did check the log as to why it had been deleted. At the time of reading it certainly didn't seem like a blatant attempt to promote the brand but instead a valuable resource for someone like myself and now I am having to resort to pulling info from the brand's website, which is certainly publicity driven and devoid of many of the more impartial details I had been looking for. You'll find a lot more information on the website than you would have done in the article, especially since the article was no more than a cobbled-together collection of various snippets copied from the company's webpage. At the time of deletion, there was not a single sentence in the entire article that could be considered impartial (again, this is hardly surprising since it was all taken from the company's own website). Hi, Yunshui. Do you remember H. V. Kumar? You have had dealings with the article about him at various times since October 2012, the latest being yesterday, when you deleted the article. The author of the article is under the mistaken impression that I deleted it, and has posted to my talk page asking me to restore it. I have posted a long answer, amongst other things pointing out that I didn't delete it. It is possible that he will now come to you to ask for restoration. If so, you may possibly like to see what I have written about it, which you can see here, in the section "Deleted HVK's article". Thanks for the advance warning. I concur with your analysis - namely, that after deletion at AFD and subsequent userfication, the article was reposted with no meaningful improvements. Take a closer look at your false poses

Re this: You correctly observed that NaplesBotanical (talk · contribs) was a false pos for the reported issue ("lesbo"). However the account's edits had solely been to Naples Botanical Garden, so I blocked the account for a username violation on those grounds.

Remember, just because the bot got it wrong on the reported issue doesn't mean there aren't any issues. I always check the contribs and deleted contribs before marking a bot report as a false pos. Daniel Case (talk) 17:08, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm only getting seven reasons instead of a window and a half (which finished up with the specialised checkuserblock below the spamublock I use so often - I nearly blocked someone checkuser when that first appeared as I just went for the bottom reason as usual...). I've tried looking at it several times now, on various users (including you, as it happens...) - no change, so I'm guessing it's something specific to your settings. I did rather expect that (the Edit... page is Mediawiki, so if one person can see it in full, everyone else should be able to as well). Okay, the problem's definitely with your drop down menu and how it's picking up the data from that page. Changed any settings lately? One thing you could try is purging your cache, or closing and reopening your browser (you know, all the usual stuff IT helpdesks ask you to do...). Structure and content seems pretty good, but there's a few places where a good copyedit would do wonders for it (e.g. missing capital in 3rd sentence of lead; lines like, "It is also known as the Prime minister Capital of the India, the importance of the government to the city has led seven out of fourteen Prime Ministers of India"; inconsistent terminology (ANN or AMC?); incomplete HTML in the Culture section; the tourism section is pretty unintelligible etc.). I'd suggest putting it in front of the Guild of copyeditors for a once-over. Sources look generally okay, but the formatting should be the same for all of them, and I'd give the External links section a bit of a prune. Visa vandal

Hi, I don't know if you remember our previous discussion about the visa articles vandal who keeps removing Taiwan and Japan and adding (or removing if the information is perceived by the vandal as negative ie. when the visa is required or when there is a shorter allowed stay) South Korea - User_talk:Yunshui/Archive_29#Re:_Visa_vandal. It's been ongoing ever since - [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] etc. etc. I think he's proven to be persistent, doing the same thing for months. I've blocked his most recent (static) IP for a month, but I'm not sure how much good it will do; he seems to have access to several diverse IP ranges. A rangeblock's out of the question, and as we discussed before, there are too many pages affected for protection to be an effective solution. Your best bet might be to get someone with decent Regex chops to create an edit filter of some sort, though I'm not sure what form it would have to take. Thanks! We could look for a filter that would be applied to visa articles that would prohibit edits concerning words Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Crikey, I've no clue - can't remember if it started from an AIV report or an RPP or something else. Twofortnights any ideas? As I recall, this particular user edits visa-related pages solely to remove references to China, Japan and (I think Taiwan), and insert South Korea instead. Not seen any other activity. If you can create a filter that detects and prevents edits by IPs that follow that pattern, it should do the job.

Thank you both for your fast response! Yeah it was at one of the reporting pages, not sure exactly where, I can look through history. But I can tell you right now what the pattern is, this user basically goes through Visa policy of xxxcountrynamexxx (around 200 of these articles, there are 194 UN recognized countries plus some disputed and autonomous areas with separate visa policies) and does the following: 1) removes Taiwan 2) adds South Korea to the lists where South Korea is not visa exempt 3) removes South Korea where it's mentioned as a country whose citizens require a visa 4) from time to time also removes Japan. His IP addresses differed a lot but they seemed to be limited to around 3 ranges. He also edited with a registered account a few times. All the articles are here Template:Visa policy by country, please note that when I wrote 200 articles, I forgot that many countries have the common visa policy, which means one article, which means much less than 200 of them. He was also seen editing the Working holiday visa - recent revert of a few dozen edits he made extensively in the same way of introducing factual errors.--Twofortnights (talk) 14:19, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ugh... I've looked through about a dozen or so of the edits, and I'm not sure that an edit filter here will do the trick. The reason for that is that this person isn't doing all of the changes in one edit most of the time. They do one edit to remove Taiwan, they do a separate edit to add S. Korea, etc... In of themselves, the edits that are being done, shouldn't trigger a filter because they are too simple. If there were multiple of these 194 articles that used the exact same list, then the clever thing to do would be to create a template, semi (or template) protect that template, and then transclude it in all the articles. I really don't have time to look through all of those articles, but do they all use the same list (minus themselves)? Technical 13 No, it is just simple tables like this - [13] in all articles. What you are suggesting though is some kind of a template with all countries listed, and in articles activated via country codes? For an example Moldova is visa-free for Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, and this would work by having this template that would be like {{countrylistvisafree|2|AD AU AZ}} that would produce the same list with flags and links for those countries as it is right now - Visa_policy_of_Moldova? Is such template possible (I presume yes, it would be similar to subst templates used for user warnings perhaps)? I would like to know please how the page I created is different from this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logitech ? I tried to create it in the same way as it is Logitech created. You can easily compare the sentences I've written with the sentences that are written about Logitech. I even copied the sentences and adjusted them to LetsHelp. Therefore, could you please reply why Logitech can be listed here and LetsHelp cannot?

The Logitech article cites a number of independent sources which attest to the fact that Logitech meets Wikipedia's basic inclusion requirements for notability. Your submitted article did not, nor did it suggest that LetsHelp is in any way important or significant enough to be included in an encyclopedia. The article was virtually unintelligible, dreadfully formatted, promotional in tone and loaded with probable copyright violations - however I actually deleted it because it made no claim of importance and contained no independent sources attesting to its notability. Hi Yunshui - Biol 345 question

Hi Yunshui, hope all is well with you. My partner and I found that there were two wiki pages that relate to the Mount Seymour Park in Vancouver, Canada. We plan to integrate the information together into one page so its much easier for the viewer. We plan to take the information from the Mount Seymour and add it to the Mount Seymour Provincial Park page (which we are currently editing and adding our own information in our sandbox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Thelukkolukko/sandbox).

What is the proper plan of action that should we do? So far, we copied and pasted the information from Mount Seymour into our sandbox editing page. Is this allowed? What you suggest? We also noticed that once we amalgamate the pages together and transfer the info from Mount Seymour to our sandbox ( which will eventually be the edited Mount Seymour Provincial Park page), the Mount Seymour page does not necessarily need to exist.

Should we just edit the Mount Seymour page and delete all the information or is there a proper way of doing this. We ultimately want our edited version of the Mount Seymour Provincial Park to be the major source of info, so is there a way to make the Mount Seymour Page forward to ours?

Hi Aabundo. It sounds as though what you're proposing is what we refer to as a page merge (removing one page and incorporating its content into another). I'd be wary of doing this with two such established articles - most merges tend to require a discussion and an establishment of consensus on the article's talkpage. If you do combine the two pages into one, your work will probably be reverted and you'll be told to discuss it first.
That's not to say it isn't a good idea to combine the pages, but if you want to go down that route you'll need to log a merge proposal (see the link in my first sentence for details), and you'd probably have a wait of several weeks before a consensus is established and the discussion is closed. Even then, there's no guarantee that the consensus will approve your proposal (on past experience, I'd say it probably wouldn't). Given that you guys (unlike most Wikipedia editors) are working to a timeframe, that's probably not the most sensible process to get involved with.
If you decide to go ahead without holding a discussion, the correct process is to incorporate all of the information into the new page first, then replace the content of the Mount Seymour article with the code #REDIRECT [[Mount Seymour Provincial Park]]. As I said, though, if you do this you will probably find that it gets reverted almost immediately.
I would suggest, instead, that you incorporate a small amount of information from the Mount Seymour page into your draft, condensing the content of that article into one or two paragraphs and adding it as a section within your revised version of the Mount Seymour Provincial Park page. You can also use the {{main}} template to link readers to the full version of the Mount Seymour article.
One thing that you do need to be careful with is copying and pasting within Wikipedia. No-one's going to be too fussed if you take a copy of a page into a sandbox for editing (although technically speaking you shouldn't), but you'll need to be careful in moving the content back to the "live" page, especially if it ends up incorporating text from the Mount Seymour article. Hope you are doing well. We followed your advice and rather just summarized info into our draft and used the Template:Tlx/main template. We also created a discussion just to see if it would work- although we are doubtful. We are wondering what would be the way to apply our draft into the actual page - do we just copy and paste our draft script? Hi Yunshui, I just had a question about references. I am doing a page about the ecology center at lynn valley park and all my information of the wikipedia page so far is coming from their website. Do I need to keep referencing the website with in-text citations? Or can I just refer to it at the end of the page?

Hi Abhic93. There are several things I need to cover here. First and foremost, you absolutely cannot copy the text of the Lynn Valley Centre website into Wikipedia. I've deleted the sections that were copied directly, but you also need to rewrite what's left quite extensively, as it is currently a close paraphrase of the Centre's website. Placing non-free text into Wikipedia like this is not only against Wikipedia's policies, it is also technically illegal - you are re-releasing someone else's work as your own and under a new licence, in direct violation of their copyright. Sorry to be stern, but that really is an absolute no-no here. I appreciate that you probably intended to change the text as you worked on the article, but I'm afraid that Wikipedia cannot host non-free material from other sources, even in a sandbox, even for a short time.
Serious stuff out of the way, let's get to the less pressing issues. Another reason that Wikipedia doesn't use text from else is that it doesn't usually meet the requirements for a neutral tone of voice - unsurprisingly, text from a company's website tends to be fairly favourable to the company. When you're writing, remember that you're not trying to advertise the Centre or its programs - you're providing encyclopedic information for someone who has never been there and in all likelihood, never will. In a thirty years time, will it be useful for a reader in, say, Nepal to know that the Centre offered birthday parties for children under 10, and that these were scheduled between 1 and 3.15 pm at weekends (except for occasional Fridays by prior arrangement)?
By the same token, we also don't accept articles that are sourced only to the subject of the article. Nothing is stopping me from creating a website about myself claiming all sorts of fantastic things about my amazing skills, but Wikipedia wouldn't accept that website as a source for an article about me. The key criterion with Wikipedia is that someone else must have written about it first. You therefore need sources which are about the Centre, not by the Centre; without such sources, I'm afraid the article won't stand a chance.
Finally, to address the question you actually asked: You need to add inline citations for any information that is likely to be challenged. In practice, that means that you should generally have a citation at the end of each paragraph, and additional citations at the end of sentences which contain potentially controversial information (like, for example, facts and figures). Adding citations looks pretty complicated but is actually very easy once you get the hang of it; I've put together a very short essay which will give you all the basic info that you need. Hi Peter. I'm assuming you're referring to the IP editor, but (at the time for writing) he seems to have packed his bags, so there's not really any action to take. You might, of course, be referring to the fact that the article's in a pretty dire state generally, and could use some work... If it's something else, let me know.

Hi Yunshui, I've not been involved at all in the AfC process so I have no idea what the correct procedures are! I noticed this edit and checked the links to the addition. It appears the new article for Povodog may be a copy paste of the sources - for instance this one and from this as well. As official representatives of the Povodog shelter you should not be editing an article about your organisation. The article will not be restored, as it violated that copyright of a number of different sources. You absolutely may not add copy-pasted content from any non-free source to Wikipedia. I am a hair's-breadth away from blocking your account for repeated copyright violations and promotional editing; if you add any further material that is not entirely your own work, I shall do so. NEW POWERFUL DAMA

Dear Yunshi, You delete the New Powerful Dama, because according to you there is already a side for that with Queen Chess. This is not correct, because the New Powerful Dama has two meanings. It was used as a New Chess Queen in 1475 instead of the old arabic piece in Spain with a complete new movement. Apart from that the New Powerful Dama was also used in a new game, namely the draughts game or checkers game as it is called in the USA. If we use only Queen Chess than there is not any relationship with the New Powerful Dama to the draughts (checkers) game. So I request for an apart article for the New Powerful Dama and ofcourse I am willing to put the article at first in the sandbox for ameliorating texts together. As far as I can tell from the literature, Govert Westerveld is the only person in the chess community using this terminology in an attempt to establish a Valencian origin for the chess queen. I've no objection to this being included in the article on the chess queen (assuming some sources canbe found to support it), but no-one except Westerveld seems to use this term or make any connection to the game of draughts.
