Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (or simply Batman vs. Superman)[1][2][3] is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics characters Batman and Superman. The film will be co-produced by Legendary Pictures and Syncopy Films, distributed by Warner Bros. It is the intended sequel to 2013's Man of Steel and is the second installment in the DC Cinematic Universe. The film will be directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio.
The sequel was announced at 2013 San Diego Comic Con International, after the release of Man of Steel. Snyder and Goyer were both brought back in June 2013. Pre-production began at East Los Angeles College on October 19, 2013.[4]
The film is scheduled for release on May 6, 2016.
Cast
- Henry Cavill as Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman: A Kryptonian whose parents sent him to Earth as an infant to escape the destruction of his homeworld Krypton. He now serves as the protector of Metropolis and works at the Daily Planet under the alias Clark Kent, after the events of Man of Steel.[5][6]
- Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman: A billionaire turned crime fighter.[7] In an interview, director Zack Snyder stated that, "Ben provides an interesting counterbalance to Henry's Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne."[7] Affleck's casting as Batman was the subject of media controversy,[8] including outcry by fans for Warner Bros. to remove Affleck from the role.[9] He himself was initially reluctant to accept the role, feeling that he "didn’t fit the traditional mold. But once Zack showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris [Nolan] and Christian [Bale] made, but still in keeping with tradition, I was excited."[10] The new Batsuit that Affleck will be wearing, marks a departure from the plated armor found in Christopher Nolan's trilogy, instead drawing inspiration from Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. [11]
- Amy Adams as Lois Lane: Reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper and love interest of Clark Kent.[5]
- Diane Lane as Martha Kent: Clark Kent’s adoptive mother.[5]
- Laurence Fishburne as Perry White: The editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet and the boss to both Clark Kent and Lois Lane.[5]
- Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor: Snyder described the casting of Eisenberg as Luthor by stating, "Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions."[2][12] Eisenberg's casting met with wide backlash, with fans criticising that he was too young and didn't fit the source material.
- Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth: Bruce Wayne's butler and mentor.[12]
- Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman[3]: Much like Affleck, news of Gadot's casting was met with significant backlash from fans through social media, many criticising Gadot's small frame in contrast to Wonder Woman's warrior-like build in the comics. Gadot has stated however, she has been participating in various training regimens to achieve a body that stays closer to the source material [13]
Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey and Tao Okamoto were cast in unspecified roles.[14] By the end of April, Ray Fisher had been cast as Victor Stone / Cyborg, a minor role that will become more significant in additional films leading up to the proposed Justice League film.[15]
Production
Development
In June 2013, it was announced that director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer would both be returning for a Man of Steel sequel, which is being fast tracked by Warner Bros. Goyer had previously signed a three-film deal, which includes Man of Steel, its sequel, and a Justice League film featuring Superman. Christopher Nolan has announced he will be attached as executive producer, while composer Hans Zimmer is set to return to score the sequel.[16] Later in the month, the studio was considering a 2014 release for the film.[17]
In July 2013, Zack Snyder confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con International that the sequel to Man of Steel in 2015 will have Superman and Batman meeting for the first time in a cinematic format. Goyer and Snyder will co-write the story, with Goyer writing the script. Cavill, Adams, Lane, and Fishburne will reprise their roles.[5][18] Snyder stated that the film would take inspiration from the comic The Dark Knight Returns.[19] However, in November 2013, Snyder clarified that the film would not be based on the graphic novel. "If you were going to do that, you would need a different Superman. We’re bringing Batman into the universe that now this Superman lives in."[20] Goyer stated at the Superman 75th Anniversary Panel at Comic-Con, that Superman and Batman will face off, and titles under consideration are Superman vs Batman or Batman vs Superman.[1] The production will film in Toronto, Ontario, rather than Vancouver as Man of Steel did.[21]
In January 2014, it was announced that the film had been delayed from its original July 17, 2015 release date to May 6, 2016, in order to give the filmmakers "time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story".[22] In April 2014, Hans Zimmer confirmed that he would return to compose the sequel's score.[23] The film's official title was announced on May 21, 2014, following the beginning of principal photography.[24] In December 2013, Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio was hired to rewrite the script, due to Goyer's commitments in other projects.[25]
Filming
In September 2013, Larry Fong joined the crew as cinematographer after previously having worked with Zack Snyder in 300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch.[26] Initial filming commenced on October 19, 2013, at East Los Angeles College to shoot a football game between Gotham City University and rival Metropolis State University.[27] At the end of the month, construction began on the Kent farm seen in Man of Steel for the film.[28] In December 2013, Gadot was cast in the lead role, revealed to be Wonder Woman.[3]
In March 2014, the Illinois Film Office revealed that additional filming will take place in the Yorkville, Illinois area in late 2014.[29] The principal photography involving the main cast of the film began on May 19, 2014.[30] The filming will begin in Detroit, Michigan[31] with some scenes featuring Gal Gadot already being filmed on May 16.[32] In late May 2014, the film's official title Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was revealed.[24]
