A2z Support Deletion

Hi Dear Nyttend, Why you deleted my newly edited page ? A2z Page Deletion

Hi Dear Nyttend , i hope you are fine. I am here to talk something after i was make useless by the other wikians administrators. My point is that i have created A2z Support Page on the start not as it for promotional purposes i swear but only for the topic that what is meant for and what is it's function. But my page was deleted although i requested everyone as i am new to wikipedia you all should help me creating pages but you are just throwing me. I then did't lose my effort , i regret i make 2-3 I.D's for the sake because i was being abused by friends that wiki is a place that no one can create page easily , u have not the will . see they make you effortless !!!! That's why i make the I.D Kat Mano and then asked for your email a few minutes ago to take guidelines about that. Even yesterday i make the page again by doing efforts and created it , also u was teaching me and you very guiding me very excellent and sensible than the others at that time and i was ready to make edits and delete the contents that looks promotional so it will give me lesson for the next time when i make such more pages that what tp write or what to not. but again blocked as sockpuppet. So here i am all the administrators , not the sockpuppet , original person here to speak !!! My questions is to all the admins ??? 1. if you are authority than you are God ?? You can suck anyone without teaching him if he is new ?? Great !! Then deliver a message again to community and make this I.D also block . Go on !! But what will you say now ? Sockpuppet ?? This is original and i can prove this.. Still no queries , i appologize from all the admins if anyone got irritated from me. I was new you all should give me the chance to edit and look my content again , if any pharase looks promotional , you can delete that ,,,, even i got learning from that !! Dear Nyttend it's a formal request to you to please undelete the yesterday page and guide me about the pharases that showing it promotional. Or it's upto you block me. That's last time i am here. Decioun is yours Regards Asimbwp1 (talk) 18:23, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! There is a DR/N request you may have interest in.

This message is being sent to let you know of a discussion at the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding a content dispute discussion you may have participated in. Content disputes can hold up article development and make editing difficult for editors. You are not required to participate, but you are both invited and encouraged to help this dispute come to a resolution. Please join us to help form a consensus. Thank you! I opened a discussion here to try to get an NPOV resolution. So add your arguments --Cs california (talk) 06:34, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding your opinions. Just wanted you to know I just post on Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard to get a NPOV answer than Wikiproject Cities. If the resolution of the third party says to remove the maps then I will personally remove all the ones I added and also additional ones which I did not add since it can be used as a NPOV reference. That way you won't have to deal with the cleanup of the pages. --Cs california (talk) 09:24, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"name" field policy in school articles

User_talk:Corkythehornetfan asked me to comment at User_talk:Corkythehornetfan#University_of_West_Georgia. I commented, but I can't find the Wikipedia policy. Request to lift my de facto topic ban

Hello Nyttend, this is with regard to this ANI event and our discussions here on your talk page and on mine when you gave me a de facto topic ban on Sino-Indian topics. I request you to lift the ban. I received the ban even before I knew about the ANI, and before I could put forward my explanations. In our discussions, I think I've explained most of your concerns / issues. As I've tried to explain to you, the allegations about POV pushing are really not true, you can see the discussions on the talk pages where I've explained my edits. Please let me know if you still have any concerns regarding my editing apart from Copyright Violations. As for Copyright Violations, I understand clearly the seriousness of the matter and that any infringement is intolerable. The Discoverer (talk) 15:14, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Coordinates of Fiberglas Tower

With this edit back in 2012, you added coordinates to Fiberglas Tower. I've just now discovered that they were way off and corrected them. I'm not sure what could have caused that error. Can you see if you know, and if so, correct any others that you may have added the same error to? Thanks, Jackmcbarn (talk) 22:22, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Jackmcbarn, the incorrect coordinates, 39°3′3″N 87°33′53″W / 39.05083°N 87.56472°W / 39.05083; -87.56472, are those of the National Register-listed Union Christian College in Merom, Indiana. Presumably I had that page open, copy/pasted the infobox, and changed all the information in the parameters, except for overlooking the coord change. A member of WP:NRHP maintains an infobox generator, which is highly useful when you're writing a new article or expanding an existing one, but it's only useful when the property was NR-listed before the National Park Service last updated the database from which the infobox generator is drawn. With newly listed properties, like the Fiberglas Tower, you've got to fill it out manually or copy/paste from somewhere else. Nyttend (talk) 02:17, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Paulscrawl, see the new Community post office page. It's too basic to be hugely useful, but hopefully it will be a good introduction. I ignored the second link you provided because while it indeed makes good background reading as you said, it doesn't come from an authoritative source. "What's going on there?"

I'm not quite sure, actually. Perhaps you'd care to explain. I know only that you arrived at Template:In the news and replaced our newly implemented format with a malformed approximation of the old one. —David Levy 14:00, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So it's a new consensus format? I assumed that it had gotten updated by someone who wasn't familiar with the Main Page's normal working and added a caption as in an article, instead of the Main Page standard of (pictured). People are always so picky about where the italics go (italicise the parentheses, don't italicise the parentheses), and I can't remember, so I just skip them entirely and wait for someone else to add them. Nyttend (talk) 14:07, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We've adopted the new format at ITN, DYK and OTD (along with FTFA and FTFL, when appropriate). As with any and every significant change, the underlying consensus has been questioned. In particular, some editors didn't regard the removal of the (pictured) notation (all-italic, incidentally) as an intrinsic element. There appears to be a fair amount of support for (and little opposition to) its continued inclusion, so it's been tentatively revived (while retaining the caption). —David Levy 14:21, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help me understand the difference

You tagged my photo of a roadside sign as a copyvio. I'm trying to understand the difference between mine and this [1] photo. Mine is paid for by tax dollars, placed by a government entity. The other one is paid for by private funds and placed by a private organization. In both cases, the signs are the focal point of the picture. Can you help me understand the difference? Niteshift36 (talk) 15:54, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Washington & Jefferson College is, in fact, a copyrighted name of the school. Length alone shouldn't really be the issue. All the sign does is reproduce a government document. This would be no different than me taking a photo of any other public record document. The fact that this one was actually meant to be seen by as many people as possible (which is why the put it 3 feet off of a historic road) tends to make me question whether the state asserts a copyright over it. Niteshift36 (talk) 12:30, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Commons:Template:PD-text says:"Facts, data, and unoriginal information which is common property without sufficiently creative authorship in a general typeface or basic handwriting, and simple geometric shapes are not protected by copyright." Why wouldn't this apply? The sign is merely reciting facts about events that happened 200 years prior in a fairly matter of fact way. There wasn't much in the way of creativity involved, just 3 sentences of facts and data in a basic typeface. Niteshift36 (talk) 12:36, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I misspoke when I said copyright and was thinking trademark. That said, you could point something out without the attitude you've been giving me since the first response. I'm not brand new and I am actually asking questions to help understand the issue. Your responses have dripped with condescension. Your snippy reply about "reproduce a book" is not what I said. Obviously a book would have creativity involved. 3 sentences of mainly facts and dates, not so much. And your summary that it's about being able to say such and such happened seems off base when you consider it also talks about "basic typeface" or handwriting. So riddle me this: If the local govt. tapes a paper to my door, telling me that a water main broke and I should boil water for the next 24 hours, going on to tell me why I should boil water, would that be copyrighted? Niteshift36 (talk) 12:49, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, I guess that attitude just isn't going to disappear. Love the last part about how I opened myself up to a lawsuit for taking a picture of a street sign produced by tax dollars. I'll wait here for that....feel free to report me to the commonwealth. I'm sure they'll jump right on that one.) Niteshift36 (talk) 13:22, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • BTW, this article [2], posted on the PA govt website, written by employees of the commission, actually promotes 2 websites that encourage people to photograph the markers and posting them online. In any case, I've emailed them to ask directly about using the photo on Wikipedia. Niteshift36 (talk) 13:35, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Demographics

Twice now, you have introduced content with a broken reference into an article. Your claim that these statistics are retained nationwide is spurious. There is no need for an entire section describing demographics from the 2000 census if the 2010 census figures have their own paragraph, especially given the historical population table which summarizes past census figures quite nicely. DRN Notice

Hello Nyttend.
Sadly it has become obvious that our one-on-one discussion on the Miss Cleo talk page is never going to lead to anything even remotely resembling an agreement.  So I have added this issue to the DRN.
I am hopeful and optimistic that the addition of a moderator to the mix may create an atmosphere where we may eventually find a convergence, maybe not of our opinions, but at least of what we are willing to accept for the Miss Cleo article.  My understanding is that I am supposed to notify all editors who are involved or have been involved in the dispute.  (So far that's just you and me.)  So just to make it official, I am now posting a copy of this message on your user talk page.  May I make the suggestion that, if you respond, you do so on the article talk page, just so there will be a page with a complete record of our conversation; but of course where and even whether you respond is entirely your own prerogative.
I find it truly regrettable that it has come to this.  But I feel it is the appropriate thing to do at this point.

Deleting redirects

Hi Nyttend. I recently tried for a speedy delete on a couple of redirects[3][4] which you removed. No problem with that, just want to check why (probably because there are better things to do :) )? Bromley86 (talk) 02:43, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I picked the spam criterion because the chap who set it up did so as part of a promo egotrip. There's zero reliable mention of "Lesser Diesel" out there (there is of Lesser, but there's no evidence that he went into business with Diesel), so it's not notable and is unambiguous advertising or promotion. I.e. it was set up purely so he can benefit from Lesser's historic reputation; that was effectively the conclusion a moderator involved in a long-running saga over on Quatloos! came to.[5].
Can't see any other G or R criteria that might apply. As I said, np if there's no way to delete it; I was just tidying up. Assuming they can't be deleted, I'm curious what would happen if I set up a bunch of spurious redirects? Not that I'm going to, naturally. Bromley86 (talk) 08:55, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Found the reason for false "potential vandalism" tags

Dear Nyttend, Thank you very much for your positive and encouraging comment! Best. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alphabett (talkcontribs) 08:33, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think I found the reason - it is the beta visual editor. The visual editor has a bug. Sometimes, when it shows captcha, there is no way to enter the right letters - for some reason it it doesn't accept the right letters. I do manage to save the edit, however, if I use the old method. So once I fail captcha a few times, the system concludes that it's a potential vandalism. A bit annoying, since I find the visual editor much easier.

PS Thanks for the nice message that you sent me earlier :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alphabett (talkcontribs) 18:11, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Redirection of example files

Why did you delete File:Example.png and File:Example.gif and redirect them to File:Example.jpg? The png and gif versions can for example be used to test whether software like browsers and Wikimedia image scaling works with the file types. It's confusing if you actually get a jpg image when you test code with gif or png. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:12, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for restoring them. It looks fine. I don't know why Commons would redirect a file name to another file type. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:38, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Nyttend,

Thanks for your lengthy and detailed response.

"You're welcome! Good work on identifying the potential issue. The visual editor is a comparatively new thing..."

Thanks :) Also, I figured I could do the editing on the visual editor, then switch to the old method to save the changes there. No problems that way.

"Meanwhile, did you see the response that Black Kite left for you at Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives?... If you truncate everything after the books?id=p4lwXozo8YcC, the filter may not throw a fit as readily..."

It's a good thing to know. I'll definitely try it!

So far I've edited a few articles in the fields of my expertise. However, I feel that I can contribute to the Wikipedia community much more. Are there any organized efforts going on? Re: Margaret Sanger protection

Another edit war already seems to be in the works at Margret Sanger. I hope you'll consider at least a week of page protection. One editor in particular seems to be intent on starting something and I believe he'll lose interest if enough time passes. Chrononem  13:39, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is that what you have in mind to keep the article POV, Chrononem? The Banner talk 13:55, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
protection is needed due to Chrononem's refusal to respect consensus. Jason from nyc (talk) 14:07, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
[edit conflict] As usual in the case of an edit war, I've not looked here to see what perspective each person's been advocating: as long as I can tell that it's not a case of vandal-versus-vandalfighter, I don't care what each person's position is. However, the fact that Chrononem requested pre-emptive protection, together with the fact that it's lately been Chrononem reverting someone, followed by someone reverting Chrononem, followed by someone else making big changes, makes me wonder if Chrononem was waiting until his position was current before requesting protection. Since Chrononem and Jason from nyc have been the only repeated warriors, if I remember rightly (not going to take any actions until I check the history again, lest I've forgotten something), it would also be possible just to block them and let everyone else edit. If Chrononem asks that it be protected on the version after his, I'll be convinced that he's not trying to game the system. Nyttend (talk) 14:11, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't care when protection is applied, besides "soon". If it was applied now there would be a greater chance of the article returning to neutral POV later but I don't see anything good coming of letting it remain open. Especially since one editor has already violated the 1RR on the page since it was unprotected. Chrononem  14:43, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If Chrononem agrees and joins me I propose we both voluntarily refrain from editing the article for a week. We both have much to say in the talk and we can make our case there but let's allow others to do the edits on the actual article. If that helps, I'm willing. What do you say, Chrononem? Jason from nyc (talk) 20:30, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If @The Banner: joins in then it's a deal. I still feel that protection would improve the article's prospects. I know of at least two editors that will continue to war on the page in our absence. Chrononem  20:46, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I thought just you and me would take it down a notch. You can ask "The Banner" and @Schwarzschild Point: to pair off also. But a gentleman's agreement between the two of us isn't enough? Jason from nyc (talk) 20:52, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

RPP replies displaying strangely

Hi, when you mark pages as semi-protected on RPP it seems to show the duration in seconds and fractions e.g. 172800 seconds and 1/4 year instead of 2 days and 3 months. Is there something wrong with the template? It only seems to be happening for you. Do you know what's gone wrong, because I can't tell where the problem might lie. Problem with SHAARD?

Hi --- over the last couple weeks I've been unable to access NRHP forms in SHAARD. Therefore, I can't really work on any new stubs. Do you know of any problems?--Pubdog (talk) 19:33, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Brunswick, Ohio may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "{}"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. Hello, I noticed you participated in the 2012/13 discussion to move to Bongbong Marcos, which ended in "not moved". Someone started a new discussion a few months ago with barely any participation, not even taking in the factors mentioned in the initial RM and they moved it anyways. Perhaps you'd be interested to voice your opinion in the new RM I just started. Thanks.Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 09:57, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for pinging you just now, but is there any chance you could take a look at something?

An ANI report was filed by a user, and now that it's started turning against him he is attempting to unilaterally close it[6][7] and has altered others' comments to disrupt the flow of the discussion[8] -- is it against protocol to issue short blocks in such cases to allow discussion to take place? Thank you for creating National Register of Historic Places listings in Grenada County, Mississippi. Do you know if Golladay Hall, said to be listed on the NRHP here, is listed by another name on the webpage you created? I'd like to create a referenced stub at least. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 06:06, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have added to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_de_Grazia talk page more concerning the provenance of the picture used in his war book. In summary, I believe either a secretary of his last wife Anne-Marie de Grazia uploaded the picture. It is a serious matter, despite the fact that it is a very close match to an existing photograph, probably in the Library of Congress https://www.pinterest.com/pin/347340189988471388/ is a true picture of him some years after the war. I feel strongly about this because it is doing a tremendous disservice to those who depend upon the truth to obtain restitution or reparations for their wartime losses. Really, the picture is a close match only to those who never knew my father Alfred de Grazia.Jagtig (talk) 23:35, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
