At a public school in Monterey, a murder suddenly occurs on trivia night; however, the victim is unknown. Through a series of police interrogations, we are introduced to Madeline Martha Mckenzie, who is the ruthless, wealthy and feared woman in town who drops her youngest daughter on her first day of school. Her friend, Celeste Wright, is the mother of twin sons who are also beginning at that same school. She is married to a younger man named Perry. New to town is Jane Chapman who is a young single mother raising her son, Ziggy. Ziggy is accused of attempting to choke Renata Klein's daughter, which he denies. Celeste and Madeline befriend Jane. Secrets are later revealed showing that Madeline is struggling to cope with her ex husband Nathan's marriage to a yoga instructor named Bonnie and also trying to build a relationship with her older daughter. Celeste fears her husband. Jane's motives for moving back are unknown, but hallucinations experiences raise questions about her stay in the town.
