Kashiyatra is the annual Socio-Cultural festival of Indian Institute Of Technology (BHU), Varanasi. Marking its origin back in 1982 Kashiyatra has grown to become one of the biggest fests of North India. It is a 3-day long extravaganza, the carousel for young talents across the country to ride along, witnessing the footfall of 60000+ college students and enfolding an omnium-gatherum of dance, music, theatre, art and literature competitions and performances.
Kashiyatra takes place in the holy city of Varanasi which is a home to the greatest literary legends Kabir Das, Tulsidas, Premchand, music luminaries Surdas, Ravidas and Meera. Thus, the prolific history of Varanasi being a cultural hub fosters an aura of prowess and ingenuity is being carried on in Kashiyatra by promoting the cultural spirit through competitions among the students, who come to take part in the festival throughout the nation.
HISTORY
Starting with a humble budget of approximately Rs. 15000 in the year 1982, to reach a budget of millions in the last couple of years, Kashiyatra has surely come a long way. In last year's edition (KY 2017), a footfall of more than 60,000 was observed.
Before Kashiyatra 2012: Before the year 2012, the editions of Kashiyatra observed a number of awe-inspiring performances by great artists like Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Shaan, Lucky Ali, Javed Ali, Shivani Kashyap, Anandam Sivamani and even Pandit Ravi Shankar. Famous bands like Euphoria, Jaipur Beats, and Indian Ocean have also enthralled the audiences on the stages of Kashiyatra.
Kashiyatra 2012: This edition was launched with the theme of – 'The Myth Lives On'. The Kavi Sammelan which took place in 2012's Kashiyatra was graced by great Indian poets and lyricists like Surendra Sharma, Rahat Indori, Kumar Vishwas, Pratap Fauzdar and Rajesh Chetan; who never fail to make the audience fall in love with them either by their wits and humour, or by their thought-provoking rhymes.
Kashiyatra 2013 (24-27 January):
'The Storm is Here' was the theme for 2013. Several mesmerizing performances and events took place in this year's Kashiyatra edition; one such prominent event was the Fusion Night in which Rishi Inc. had performed.
Kashiyatra 2014 (23-26 January): Pepsico was the title sponsor for 2014's edition of Kashiyatra. The highlights for 2014's edition were the performances by the renowned mentalist Ehud Segev (aka The Mentalizer) and the well-known musician and singer Keerthi Sagathia.
Kashiyatra 2015 (13-15 Febraury): The pronite of Kashiyatra 2015 was amongst the best pronites in the history of Kashiyatra. DJ Lloyd was one of the many artists who performed in this year's pronite. Coke Studio also appeared for the pronite. A number of international performers which include personalities like Monsieur Gusto, Gianni Denitto and the Fanzini Brothers; the international circus Prof Plunger, and the renowned bands Supersonic and Tiny Fingers had also performed.
Kashiyatra 2016 (18-21 Febraury): The theme for 2016's Kashiyatra was 'Myth Just Got Real'. This year too, a great number of captivating performances were observed. Hip Hop International came to be a part of the dance competition Natraj for its auditions. Astitva and Undying Inc. performed on the nights of KY. Being Indian also took part in Kashiyatra for its auditions. One of the highlights of this edition was the Bollywood Night in which numerous acclaimed artists had performed, including Anish Sood, Nikhil D'Souza.
Kashiyatra 2017 (19-22 January): The opening ceremony of Kashiyatra 2017 was graced by illustrious performers like Ileana Citaristi [1][2] and Debanjan Bhattacharjee [3]. The pronite observed performances by musical prodigies like Sachin-Jigar, Mindshift and The Local Train. The great Indian classical intrumentalist, Rajanish Tiwari had also performed for the fest. Other than that, Darragh from Squarehead Productions which is a foreign circus has also performed last year. Dance workshop also organized by KY in association with Moving Souls. Two new events were introduced in Kashiyatra in this year, which are – Rangbaazi and Naltana.
Events
ABHINAY
- Rangmanch: It is a stage play competition where participants bring forth their theatrical abilities. [4]
- Asmita: Mono act, as the name suggests has single member participation and participant usually portrays one character.
- Hullad: Street play to spread awareness on social issues.
BANDISH
- Sur: Solo singing competition where participants entertain everyone with their distinct vocal stylings.
- Sargam: Group singing competition.
- Sanlayan: Solo instrumental where instrumentalists woo the audience with their skills on musical
instruments.
- Kriti: Everything from writing the lyrics to composing the music for the song is done by the participants!
- Advaita: Indie rock band competition. Chance for bands to bring their musical talents to stage.
CROSSWINDZ
Battle of Bands
Crosswindz, the oldest battle of bands in India, is one of the Flagship events of Kashiyatra. Since its inception, Crosswindz has been home to major rock bands in India. Some of the past winners include Escape Artist, Diabolical Damage, High Frequency and the Purple Jays. Like the previous year, this year Crosswindz will organize a road trip for multi-city elimination rounds to ensure high quality participation from bands all over the nation leading to a tight battle to be the best. After the road trip selected bands will compete in the finals to be held in Varanasi. The finals will be the opening act for headliners followed by announcement of results. The finals for the event are held in Varanasi.
NATRAJ
- Cut-a-rug: Dance, being easily the most exciting part of Kashiyatra, participants face cut throat competition to meet the audience's expectations with their solo dance performances.
- Bliss: Event of group dance competition. A fun event for the audience as well as the participants. [5]
- Ecstasy: Event of duet dance competition.
- Nritya: Event of folk dance competition.
MIRAGE
Lifestyle event
- Design elegante: This is a designer event where contenders have to choose a theme, design costumes/dresses on that theme and display them on models. [6]
- Mr and Miss Kashiyatra: The stage is set ablaze by the confident and smart folks of the college who compete for the coveted titles.
ENQUIZTA
This is a Quiz event for the curious minds out there. The topics being varied, you can always find your niche.
SAMWAAD
Event by the Literature Club
- Scripturesque: There are four sub events under scripturesque, namely English prose and poetry writing and Hindi prose and poetry writing. This is an impromptu event.
- Battlefront: Impromptu English debate, i.e. it has limited speaking and preparation time.
- Shipwreck cove: A hypothetical scenario is presented which depicts a ship full of famous personalities that is wrecked and sinking. The judges (captains) have limited life jackets remaining for the passengers. A personality is allotted to each contestant. Participants must convince the captains as to why they deserve to be saved (while sticking to their character)Judging criteria include
wit, delivery, and character portrayal.
- Legend of sir-speak-a-lot: This is the competition for original composition in English.
- Jester's court: Love to crack jokes? Then here's your chance. An event of stand-up comedy, where participants crack the audience up with their funny side.
- Vaad-vivaad: Impromptu hindi debate.
- Alfaaz: The competition for original compositions of prose or poetry, in hindi.
- Ashubhashan: A personality is alloted to each contestant. Stick to your character to speak for allotted time to clinch the prize.
- What's the word: A team event, where teams of two have to solve a questionnaire to get each indicated right word.
TOOLIKA
Event by the Club of fine arts
- Rapid fire: This contest pitches your creativity against the cruel boundaries of time. A team event, it tests your artistic side in a very short span of time.
- Spoil the tees: As the name suggests, spice up your boring white T-shirts to something completely
catchy.
- Live sketching: Take your time to sketch whoever or whatever pleases your eyes on the campus.
- Vastra shilp: The event has team participation with themes given on spot to design costumes with paper.
- Rangbaazi: Let the creativity flow. Literally. Set free the artist inside using brushes, toothbrushes or fingers, but without having used a pencil to sketch.
- The event Toolika also includes competitions for Clay modeling and Soap-carving.
- Informal events:FX makeup: This event requires the use of material, cosmetics and appliances to create the appearance of bruises, cuts, blood and scary effect. Ink it! : The participants need to design a unique tattoo with some amazing ideas, artwork and style.
Pre events
- Theme launch: It is a fun filled evening with dance and music and it launches the theme of the upcoming edition. [7]
- The Hunt: It requires participants to solve a questionnaire which leads them to a specific destination. They need to reach there first to win the prize.
- Bliss: Bliss is a national level inter school competition where participants showcase their talents and compete with their peers. The two energy filled days of Bliss witness innumerable competitions,
spanning across a wide variety of disciplines such as music, dance, theatre, fine arts and literature.
Informal events
Informals is the department that organises unconventional and spontaneous events. A major part of Informals is the Adventure Zone. It includes activities such as Zorbing, [[Paintball], Archery, Sumo Suit Wrestling and Treasure Hunt.

Kashiyatra has hosted numerous artists and famous personalities over the years with many big names and organisations being associated with it. Pronites has brought many renowned singers likeShaan, Javed Ali, Sachin-Jigar, Lucky Ali, Nikhil D’Souza, Anish Sood, The Local Train, Pt. Deorat Mishra, Euphoria, ZephyrTone and Zaedan under Sunburn, Indian Ocean, Niharika Singh, Nikita Anand. Kumar Vishwas, Rahat Indori and Surendra Sharma are also among the tons of Indian artists who have embellished the carnival by their presence. Kashiyatra is an all-embracing festival which has drawn scores of international artists as well viz. David Laborier, Michael Mootz, Monsieur Gutso, Tiny Fingure, Gianni Denitto, Fanzini Bros., AbeatC.
