Sofia Boutella (Arabic: صوفيا بوتلة; born April 3, 1982) is an Algerian[1] dancer, model and actress. Boutella has starred as Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015), an alien warrior named Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond (2016), and the main antagonist, Princess Ahmanet, in Universal's Dark Universe film The Mummy (2017).[2] Also in 2017, she starred alongside Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde, the film adaptation of the graphic novel The Coldest City, as undercover French agent Delphine Lasalle.[3]
Early life
Boutella was born in the Bab El Oued district of Algiers, the daughter of jazz musician Safy Boutella. Her mother is an Algerian architect.[4] She started classical dance education when she was five years old. At the age of 10 in 1992, she left Algeria with her family and moved to France, where she started rhythmic gymnastics, joining the French national team at age 18.[5] Her influences include Fred Astaire, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Daniel Day-Lewis and Bob Fosse.[6]
Career
Boutella took up hip hop and street dance, and was part of a group called the Vagabond Crew, which won the Battle of the Year in 2006. She also participated in a group called "Chienne de Vie and Aphrodites" created by Momo from the Vagabond Crew.
Sofia's father, Safy Boutella, is a jazz pianist and composer and graduate (1979) of the Berklee College of Music.[7]
Boutella had been rehearsing since age 17 with choreographer Blanca Li. She has danced in several film and television appearances, as well as commercials and concert tours.[5][8]
Her breakthrough arrived in 2007, when she was picked for the Jamie King choreography for Nike as a role model of femininity and hip-hop.[8] This was a major boost to her career and led to more work alongside stars like Madonna, in her Confessions Tour, and Rihanna.[5][8]
Boutella successfully auditioned for the Michael Jackson This Is It concerts but could not attend due to the extension of the Madonna tour, whose dates coincided with the Jackson residency.[9] In February 2011, she was the main character in the music video for "Hollywood Tonight" by Michael Jackson.[10][11]
Boutella played the lead character Eva in the drama film StreetDance 2,[12] the sequel to StreetDance 3D, and appeared in Kingsman: The Secret Service.[13] She appeared as the alien warrior Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond, released on July 22, 2016.[14] In 2017, she portrayed a French secret agent in the David Leitch film Atomic Blonde, which also featured Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman and Toby Jones.
In 2018, she will appear in the HBO drama film Fahrenheit 451, which stars Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon.[15]
