The Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (IIM Ranchi) is a public business school located in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. It is the ninth Indian Institute of Management to be established.
Inaugurated on 6 July 2010,[3] IIM Ranchi offers two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (PGDHRM), four[4]-year Fellowship Programme and Executive Programmes.
History
The 11th Five-Year Plan, endorsed by the National Development Council in December 2007, envisaged the establishment of seven new IIMs.
IIM Ranchi, like all IIMs, is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Human Resources Development, government of India. The institute is free to design its own curriculum and recruit faculty members. In April 2011, Union Minister Kapil Sibal announced that the government is mulling enhancement of the autonomy of IIMs by allowing them to select the director and the chairman of Board of Directors.
IIM Ranchi is amongst the six new IIMs that were approved by the Union Cabinet on 27 August 2009. M. J. Xavier was the founding director of the institute.
Campus
The college operates from a temporary campus in Suchana Bhavan, behind the Governor House premises in the heart of Ranchi. The student block of IIM Ranchi is located at Khelgaon.[5]
The construction of a permanent campus has begun at Birhar village on the Khunti-Karra road, about 35 kilometres (22 mi) from Ranchi.In July 2013,Jharkhand government allotted 90.14 acres (36.48 ha) of land free of cost to IIM Ranchi (IIM-R) at Cheri in Kanke block, 20 km from Ranchi.[6] On 29 July 2013, the Union Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Pallam Raju laid the foundation stone of IIM-Ranchi at Cheri.[7]
Academics
Like other IIMs, IIM Ranchi awards only diplomas, and not degrees.[8] The programmes offered are post graduate programmes at a level equivalent to MBA and PhD and include a standard post graduate diploma in management (PGDM), human resource management (PGDHRM), a full-time doctoral programme (FPM) and a part-time executive program (PGEXP).[9]
Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) Programme:
The two-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management Programme, equivalent to an MBA, is the flagship program which aims to prepare young graduates for senior-level positions in industry. The Programme facilitates learning in theory and practice of different functional areas of management and is carefully designed based on inputs by key stakeholders including students, industry experts, and faculty. The Post-Graduate Programme lasts six trimesters, spread over two years, with a summer project in between the two years. The curriculum is reviewed and revised periodically so that it remains relevant and contemporary. The programme also provides an opportunity for students to learn about business practices in various countries through Student Exchange Programme (STEP) and/or study trips. [10]
Post-Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (PGHRM) Programme:
The PGDHRM at IIM Ranchi is a two-year program premised on the understanding of paradigmatic shift in the operating environment for businesses. It is posited on a pedagogy and course curriculum that seeks to provide to its participants' breadth and depth of business knowledge, mastery of HR management concepts and awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the application of HR learning and practices in a business context. Fellow Programme in Management (FPM):
The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is the doctoral programme of IIM Ranchi. FPM in IIM Ranchi is an academic programme, which may require a minimum of four years to complete. Students have to undertake first two years of rigorous coursework, followed by atleast two additional years for completing the research work with the dissertation. Upon completion of their coursework in first two years, students have to take a comprehensive exam and pass on to candidacy where they work on their dissertation. Areas of specialization offered are Accounting & Finance, Economics, General Management (includes Business Communication, Business Ethics), Information Systems, Marketing Management, Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management, Operations Management, Strategic Management. Executive Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGEXP) Programme:
Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management Programme offers a two-year post-graduate diploma programme in management. specializations are offered in the areas of Finance, HRM, Marketing, and Operations. Candidates with a minimum of five years of managerial experience are eligible are eligible for the program. PGEXP diploma programme has an interesting mix of students from different backgrounds with varied experience levels. [13]

Admissions
Admission to courses at IIM Ranchi is done based upon merit in Common Admission Test, conducted by the IIMs.[18]
Student activities
All student activities are managed by student body comprises of the student council and different clubs & committees. The student body has formed seven committees to resolve all concern and act as an intermediary between the administration and students. Academic Committee role is to facilitate students with all the academic activities at IIMR. Alumni and International Relations (AIR) Committee works on the interest of IIM Ranchi alumni and maintains the relationship with them as well as forging relationships with the best b-schools from all over the world for the purpose of Student Exchange Programmes. The Information Technology Committee caters to the IT needs of the students. The Media PR cell & Literary Committee is responsible for branding activities of the college and strives to promote a culture of literary appreciation. The Sports and Cultural Committee at IIM Ranchi is responsible for facilitating all sporting and cultural events of the institute. The Student and Facilities Committee (SFC) is responsible for providing the daily facilities to the students. Placement Committee has a responsibility to foster corporate relations and conduct of the summer and final placement process.[19]
To cater diverse academic interest of students, eight clubs have been formed which organizes various events throughout the year and promote vibrant atmosphere. Conundrum, the Consulting club, aims to facilitate a seamless transition from a B-school environment to a successful career in Management Consulting. E-Cell, the Entrepreneurship Cell is devoted to the cause of promoting entrepreneurship among students. The Finance Club aims at continuously enhancing the financial knowledge quotient of the students. HiRe, the HR Club is established for the overall development and understanding of HR among management professionals. Marquess, the Marketing Club, facilitates the exposure of students to various marketing concepts and works towards fostering an interest & passion for sales & marketing among students and helps enthusiasts hone their skills. Sankriya, the Operations Club tries to dispel the age-old presumptions of Operations being a very dull field. QR Code, the quiz club is dedicated to ensuring the propagation of quiz culture within IIM Ranchi. It is the youngest club. The club continuously conducts quizzing events on various topics. Samarpan, the social responsibility club promotes social activities among students. Literary club promotes the importance of literature.[20]
Apart from clubs and committees, IIM Ranchi also has various SIGs (Self Interest Groups). These include High Note which is the music SIG, Froggy Feet which is the dance SIG, Dramebaaz which is the dramatics society, Grayscale for art and photography, Equilibrium for Economics, Digitalytics for Digital Technology & Business Analytics, PRISM for helping students & sharing information and SOUL for conducting relaxing activities.[21]
Conclaves and conferences
- AAROHAN Leadership Speak Series
IIM Ranchi hosted its first leadership speak series named "Aarohan" on January 8, 2016 at Cockerel Stadium, Dipatoli cantonment, Ranchi. The idea of this is to invite role models across various fields to come and address the IIM Ranchi community, particularly the students. It is a leadership talk series aimed at student interaction with leaders and innovators of their respective fields to promote intellectual growth, stimulation and facilitate the development of a more inclusive world-view. Lt Gen Arun Kumar Sahni, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, ADC, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Command of Indian Army and Dr. Y.V.N. Krishna Murthy, Director, National Remote Sensing Centre, ISRO have been a part of the series[22]
- Colloquium
Colloquium is an annual series of guest lectures, where students of IIM Ranchi get an opportunity to interact with the industry leaders in finance, marketing, operations and HR that happen throughout the year. The speakers also deliver insights along with discussions on various contemporary issues faced by India.Some of the renowned speakers are: Mr. Amar Abrol, MD and CEO, AirAsia India. Mr. Amit Vaish, Director and Head HR, Barclays India. Mr. Satish Shah, Head of Human Capital, De Shaw India. Mr. Anirudh Patil, Director of Strategy & Operations, McKinsey & Co. Mr. Shashank Saxena, Vice President of Technology, Morgan Stanley.[23]
- HR Conclave
IIM Ranchi being the only IIM to offer specialised course in Human Resource Management, have organised two HR conclaves themed as "Turning the tide on unrest in workforce " in 2012 and "Holistic Development of Human Capital" in 2011, leaders across industry discussed the challenges faced by organizations and the role of HR managers in solving those challenges. Dignitaries like K.A. Narayan, President-HR, Raymond, Mr. Sandeep Choudhary, Partner, Aon Hewitt, Mr. Partha Dasgupta, CEO, Apogee Leads, Mr. R. Sridhar, Vice President-HR, ITC Limited any many others discussed about HR practices.[24]
- Radix- the annual business conclave
Based on the theme -’Connect’, ‘Enthuse’ and ‘Foster’- Radix is an opportunity for the young minds to welcome industry stalwarts and gain insights from their rich experience. The aim is to facilitate a quality interaction among the experts and the students along with exchange of ideas regarding various industrial growth factors and the development of a shared vision for the future. Leaders from organizations such as KPMG, Ernst & Young, Lenovo, Godrej etc. have been a part of Radix 2017.[25]
Events at IIM Ranchi
AGON is the management fest of IIM Ranchi, spread across two days with participation pouring in from other colleges countrywide.[citation needed] Rush is the sports and cultural fest. It was inaugurated in 2015 with participation from various management, engineering and law colleges including IIM Calcutta, IIM Raipur, XISS, KIIT, BIT Mesra and NLU.[citation needed]
TEDxIIMRanchi
IIM Ranchi has been organizing and conducting TED talks since seven years[when?]. It is a platform to bring together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers for the dissemination of strong ideas and inspiring stories about exemplary lives. The TEDx (x=independently organized TED event) was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, "Ideas Worth Spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.[26][27] Eminent personalities like Dr. Pawan G Agrawal, Founder & President of Kamalabai Educational and Charitable Trust, Mumbai - famous for Dabbawalas; Priyadarshini Chatterjee - Femina Miss India World in 2016; Manasi Pradhan - founder of Honour for Women National Campaign; Tetseo Sisters - the quartet of sisters from Nagaland, who devoted to the art and tradition of the vocal folk music of North-East India were a few of the many esteemed speakers at TedxIIMRanchi 2018.
