This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Siihb (talk | contribs) at 00:32, 28 October 2019 (→‎The comment controversy needs its own section.: new section). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Is the last section about the wrong person?

The section entitled "Viewpoints on Huffman's work by his peers" makes no sense.. I think it might be about some guy named "Steve Hoffman":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Hoffman_(audio_engineer)

That entire section makes no sense in the context of this page's other info.

Regarding Huffman's recent statements

I'd advise against any users coming in from Reddit to add anything regarding Steve Huffman's admission to editing user posts, it's far too recent to add and there's very few sources other than the posts themselves. It's still developing and there simply not enough reason to add it to the article yet. You'll only get up getting into an edit war which will result in the article being locked. 51.37.38.145 (talk) 05:35, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's been two years, and there are numerous news stories about this. Is is still too recent? Baron ridiculous (talk) 15:02, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Moving "Comment modification controversy" section to Reddit article?

This section deals with a recent debacle at Reddit. Although the section specifically discusses his conduct in relation to that controversy, perhaps it would be more appropriate as a part of the Reddit article instead? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Digbybare (talkcontribs) 00:25, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request to create Early life and education section

Hi there! On behalf of Mr. Huffman and Reddit, I've been working on a new draft for this article to provide a more developed version that is consistently sourced and expands on this stub. I've researched Mr. Huffman and created a full draft of what an updated article could look like based on secondary sourcing and in line with Wikipedia's standards. You can see my proposed draft in my user space. I've also made this diff to compare my draft with the current article.

Since I'm suggesting a full article rewrite, I'll split my proposed updates and share them section-by-section as to not overwhelm reviewing editors. To start, I'd like to propose the creation of a short new Early life and education section, as this is a standard section in biographical articles.

In this section, reviewing editors will see I have added new information on Mr. Huffman's hometown, programming at age 8, and graduation years at Wakefield School and University of Virginia. I'm also suggesting moving the existing mentions of Wakefield and UV from the Career section; since these details pertain to Mr. Huffman's life prior to his career. This new section can then be further developed over time, if needed.

Proposed new draft for Early life and education
Early life and education
Steve Huffman grew up in Warrenton, Virginia.[1] At age 8, he began programming computers.[1] He graduated in 2001 from Wakefield School in The Plains, Virginia.[2] At the University of Virginia (UVA), he studied computer science, graduating in 2005.[1][3]

As I do have a financial conflict of interest, since I'm making this suggestion on behalf of Mr. Huffman as part of my work at Beutler Ink, I won't make any edits to the article myself. Instead, I welcome input from uninvolved editors and assistance taking live changes as appropriate.

I've noticed that Opencooper has made constructive edits to this article recently. Would you be interested and able to look into this request? Thanks in advance, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 23:07, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@16912 Rhiannon: This specific section looks good to me, and I've confirmed that the citations support the information stated. Opencooper (talk) 23:31, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for reviewing my request, Opencooper! Would you be willing to make the changes in the article? Due to my financial COI, I don't edit articles directly. Thanks in advance, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 21:07, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@16912 Rhiannon: Done (by the way, I left some small feedback on the talk page of the draft if you want to check that out as well). Opencooper (talk) 21:40, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Opencooper: Thanks so much! And I appreciate the feedback on the full draft, too. I'll dive in there and update, then I'll ping back here with my next request soon. Thanks again, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 21:16, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request to update Career section

Hi there! On behalf of Mr. Huffman and Reddit, I'm back to propose an update for this article's Career section. First, I wanted to note that I've updated the full draft in my user space based on feedback from Opencooper shared on the Talk page of my proposed draft. If any editors are interested to see my overall proposal for this article, you can check out this diff to compare my draft with the current article.

For the Career section specifically, reviewing editors will see I am proposing adding new content on:

  • Mr. Huffman's early efforts in developing Reddit with Alexis Ohanian
  • The sale of Reddit to Conde Nast, and Mr. Huffman's continued role until 2009
  • Mr. Huffman's life after leaving Reddit in 2009
  • Mr. Huffman's return to Reddit
  • Mr. Huffman's initiatives after returning to Reddit (implementing new content guidelines, developing apps, fixing Reddit's mobile site, creating A/B testing infrastructure, adding video and image hosting, and site redesign)
  • A controversy where Mr. Huffman altered posts on The_Donald subreddit, and his apology

Additionally, I made the following changes in the proposed updated section:

  • Tightened up language surrounding issues of Reddit and free speech
  • Moved Mr. Huffman's Udacity classes out from Career to Personal life
Proposed new draft for Career

During spring break of his senior year at UVA, Huffman and college roommate Alexis Ohanian[1] drove to Boston, Massachusetts, to attend a lecture[2] delivered by programmer-entrepreneur Paul Graham.[1][3] Huffman and Ohanian talked with Graham after the lecture and he invited them to apply to his startup incubator Y Combinator.[1] Huffman came up with their original idea, My Mobile Menu,[3] which was intended to allow users to order food by SMS.[1][3] The idea was rejected, but Graham asked Huffman and Ohanian to meet him in Boston to pitch another idea for a start-up; it was at this brainstorming session that the idea for what Graham called the "front page of the Internet" was created.[1] Huffman and Ohanian were accepted in Y Combinator's first class.[1][3] Huffman coded the entire site in Lisp.[4][5] He and Ohanian launched Reddit in June 2005, funded by Y Combinator.[6][7]

The site’s audience grew rapidly in its first few months, and by August 2005, Huffman noticed their habitual user-base had grown so large that he no longer needed to fill the front page with content himself.[4][8][9] At 23, Huffman and Ohanian sold Reddit to Condé Nast on October 31, 2006, for a reported $10 million to $20 million.[1][10] Huffman remained with Reddit until 2009, when he left his role as acting CEO.[11]

Huffman spent several months backpacking in Costa Rica[12] before co-creating the travel website Hipmunk with Adam Goldstein, an author and software developer, in 2010. Funded by Y Combinator,[13][14] Hipmunk launched in August 2010[15] with Huffman serving as CTO.[16] In 2011, Inc. named Huffman to its 30 under 30 list.[16]

In 2014, Huffman said that his decision to sell Reddit had been a mistake, and that the site's growth had exceeded his expectations.[17] On July 10, 2015, Reddit hired Huffman as CEO following the resignation of Ellen Pao[18] and during a particularly difficult time for the company.[19] Upon rejoining the company, Huffman's top goals included launching Reddit's iOS and Android apps, fixing Reddit's mobile website, and creating A/B testing infrastructure.[1]

Since returning to Reddit, Huffman instituted a number of technological improvements[19] including a better mobile experience and stronger infrastructure, as well as new content guidelines. These included a ban on content that incites violence, quarantining some material users might find offensive, and removing communities "that exist solely to [...] make Reddit worse for everyone else".[1][19] Shortly after returning, Huffman wrote that "neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen."[20] In a 2012 interview, Ohanian had used the same phrase to describe Reddit, as noted by The New Yorker and The Verge.[12][21]

Huffman also worked to make the site more advertiser-friendly[1][19] and led efforts to host video and images on site.[22] In late 2016, Huffman was the focus of controversy for altering posts on a subreddit popular with supporters of Donald Trump, /r/The_Donald. Following criticism from Reddit users, he undid the change and issued an apology.[23]

Beginning in 2017, Huffman led the redesign of Reddit's website with its first major visual update in a decade.[24][25] Huffman said the site had looked like a "dystopian Craigslist" whose outdated look deterred new users.[24] Development of the new site took more than a year, and the redesign launched in April 2018.[24]

@Opencooper: Following up on our discussion from my Talk page: did you have any questions or feedback on this proposed Career section? Happy to answer any questions. 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 14:10, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@16912 Rhiannon: Hi, apologies for the weeklong delay. I've just gone through all the references to verify them. Everything has checked out, great work with the citations. On to content issues, here's my feedback:
  • When you paraphrase Huffman saying "that exist solely to [...] make Reddit worse for everyone else", the full quote is "We are banning a handful of communities that exist solely to annoy other Redditors, prevent us from improving Reddit, and generally make Reddit worse for everyone else." The "solely" part is about annoying other Redditors, while the "making Reddit worse for everyone else" is "generally". So perhaps when this is added the wording should just be changed to "generally make Reddit worse for everyone else"?
  • I'm was originally iffy on the inclusion of the debacle that occurred with him altering posts, but it seems to have also been covered in Business Insider, so it doesn't seem like undue weight anymore to me and is fine.
So overall there aren't really any problems with the section (it was just large, so it took me a while to get to, sorry). Since these changes will be the biggest proposed, I'll wait a day to allow any other interested editors—if any—to voice any opinions and then I'll make the edits. I don't see anything potentially controversial in the upcoming sections so those will probably be fast to incorporate. Opencooper (talk) 15:58, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much, Opencooper! I'm fine with the change you suggest re: "generally make Reddit worse for everyone else", and appreciate your note about the "spezgiving" situation. I'll admit I was also unsure at first about including but felt that it was best to do so given the extent of coverage in quality sources. Let me know if you have any other notes or questions, otherwise I'll hang tight and see if there's any feedback from others. Cheers, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 20:33, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Before I propose my next request (for updates to Personal life), just wanted to quickly ping Opencooper: Can you fix a ref name for me in Career? Can you rename <ref name="Carson17"> to <ref name="Wallace15">? I somehow had the wrong reference name there, many apologies for that mix up. Thanks in advance, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 22:52, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request to update Personal life section

Hi again! On behalf of Mr. Huffman and Reddit, I'm back to propose an update for this article's Personal life section. You can check out this diff to compare how my proposed Personal life section differs from the current article. To explain my changes: the current Personal life section is one sentence long, describing Mr. Huffman as a "prepper", so I am seeking to expand the information based on available sourcing.

Specifically, I'm proposing the following additions and edits:

  • Adding Mr. Huffman's residence
  • Adding his work at coding bootcamps and e-learning courses
  • Adding his role on the board of advisors for the Anti-Defamation League's Center for Technology and Society
  • Adding his ballroom dancing
  • Reverting the term "prepper" back to "survivalist", as this it is arguably a more commonly understood and neutral term
Proposed new draft for Personal life
Personal life

Huffman lives in San Francisco, California.[1] He mentors aspiring programmers at coding bootcamps including Hackbright Academy.[2] Huffman was an instructor for e-learning courses on web development by Udacity.[3][4][5] He is on the board of advisors for the Anti-Defamation League's Center for Technology and Society.[6]

Huffman is a ballroom dancer.[1][7] At the University of Virginia, Huffman competed in intercollegiate competitions.[1][7] A report in The New Yorker described Huffman as a survivalist.[1]

Request to add Net neutrality activism section

Hi again! On behalf of Mr. Huffman and Reddit, I'm back to propose an entirely new section briefly detailing Huffman's net neutrality activism. You can see how I suggest this information could fit into the article in this diff. I'd like to propose adding this new section for Net neutrality activism in between the Career and Personal life sections. The section is based on reliable secondary sources to explain Mr. Huffman's advocacy for net neutrality rules.

Proposed draft for Net neutrality activism
Net neutrality activism
Huffman is an advocate for net neutrality rules.[1][2] In 2017, Huffman told The New York Times that without net neutrality protections, "you give internet service providers the ability to choose winners and losers".[1] On Reddit, Huffman urged redditors to express support for net neutrality and contact their elected representatives in Washington, D.C.[2] Huffman said that the repeal of net neutrality rules stifles competition. He said he and Reddit would continue to advocate for net neutrality.[3]

Request to update intro + infobox

Hi again! On behalf of Mr. Huffman and Reddit, I'm back to propose a few updates to the introduction and infobox. Once again, you can compare my suggested edits against the live article by viewing this diff. My suggestions for each are as follows:

Infobox
  • Add residence
  • Provide independent source for Other names
  • Add co-founder of Hipmunk to Occupation
  • Add Reddit to Employer
Intro
  • Change "better known on Reddit as spez" to "also known by his Reddit username spez"
  • Change "American web developer and the co-founder and current CEO of content sharing website Reddit" to "American web developer and entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and CEO of Reddit, a social news and discussion website, which ranks in the top 10 websites in the world"
  • Change "More recently, he also participated in co-founding the airfare search-engine site Hipmunk" to "He also co-founded the airfare search-engine website Hipmunk"
  • I want to note here that I have removed a NYT source that appears in my draft in user space so I'm not over-citing; and I'd suggest removing the citations re: Hipmunk, since that is cited in the article body. I've included those for now, since they're in the current introduction

@16912 Rhiannon: Done. Citations for information cited in the lead also removed. Opencooper (talk) 04:10, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Opencooper: Yet again, thanks so much! Now that this article is considerably updated, I was wondering if you think we can remove its stub status?
Also, what do you think of removing the "Not to be confused with Steve Hoffman" hatnote? The decision to add the hatnote followed the addition of some errant content in 2015, and the "Steve Hoffman" page is actually a disambiguation page, so there is not one single Steve Hoffman that he may (or may not) be frequently confused with. What do you think: is this still necessary?
Lastly, I'm waiting to see if Reddit might have a new image of Mr. Huffman to upload to Wikimedia Commons. If you don't mind, I may ping you if that comes through. Thanks! 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 01:36, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@16912 Rhiannon: Stub tag removed.
Regarding the hatnote, I don't have a strong opinion towards keeping or removing it. {{distinguish}} tags can be used for people whose names sound similar or are typed similarly, even if the people themselves have nothing to do with each other and are in different fields with little chance of confusion. Perhaps you could propose that as another edit and see if anyone else has any input (though judging from the past proposals there likely won't be).
About any new images, I don't mind you pinging me if anything comes up. Personally I think the current image is pretty decent as far as BLP images go (many are taken on potatoes or in atrocious lighting conditions, with the subjects having very unflattering expressions) with good focus, sharpness, a dynamic pose, and high resolution, other than the wide aspect ratio for a portrait. But if a better freely licensed image becomes available, I don't see why not. Opencooper (talk) 05:00, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Overt COI & Systemic Bias Effects in this article

This article is non-encyclopedic. It is composed largely of unjustified editorial exposition with little or no encyclopedic value ("better mobile experience and stronger infrastructure"), quotes from the subject which are given undue prominence, literally submissions from Mr. Huffman's representatives, and a gaggle of systemic hangers on who edit war against anyone attempting to describe any of the many controversies that Mr. Huffman has been party to. Please stop using Wikipedia as a public relations platform. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:1e60:ef70:713b:f856:e42e:a0a5 (talkcontribs)

This is the new censorship I guess

Im going to hold off editing until the dispute is resolved but in no way is this the end of this.

We all know Steve Huffman went into the SQL database and changed (maybe one maybe 100006543683456904537) comments.

This was a MAJOR news story

https://www.theverge.com/2016/11/23/13739026/reddit-ceo-steve-huffman-edit-comments https://techcrunch.com/2016/11/23/reddit-huffman-trump/ https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-ceo-steve-huffman-modifies-donald-trump-the-donald-2016-11 https://gizmodo.com/reddit-ceo-caught-secretly-editing-user-comments-chatl-1789342358

99% of the edits on that page are done by PAID wikipedia editors from Beutler Ink. They used opencooper to do this. At some point don't we want to have some integrity in a public site? Is this a site for information, or advertising? Or do we want repeats of the gamergate wikipedia bullshit?

https://slate.com/technology/2015/02/wikipedia-gamergate-scandal-how-a-bad-source-made-wikipedia-wrong-about-itself.html

Ill be here until this is resolved, and I've documented every step of this process for my article.

As has been mentioned in other threads please read WP:CRIT. You seem not to have noticed that the item is not being removed just placed in the proper spot in the article. As to claims of paid editing please provide proof otherwise you are engaging in casting aspersions as well as battleground actions. MarnetteD|Talk 21:21, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps this is confusing for some of you. The CRIT guideline CLEARLY STATES - "Controversy" section. "For a specific controversy that is broadly covered in reliable sources. " Is this not a new section for a specific controversy covered in dozens of media articles? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Siihb (talkcontribs) 21:28, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally, the paid editors are literally on this page's history if you took 10 seconds to read you'd see the dozens of requests for edits that Rhiannon made to opencooper specifically asking for him by name. Several other wikipedia users have additionally requested this same heading. Why are you so intent on keeping the scandal buried under PR? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Siihb (talkcontribs) 21:31, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No confusion here. I even know how to sign my posts. Asking for someone by name is not proof of paid editing. You've linked 5 items not dozens. The item isn't buried. You've also been advised to read WP:UNDUE. I would add that you may want to read WP:RGW since your edits are falling into that pattern. MarnetteD|Talk 21:40, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Per the CRIT page..."For a specific controversy that is broadly covered in reliable sources." This was. Do you want dozens of urls? I have them. I only put 5 in there to limit spam. Was there somewhere that had a hard and fast rule of how many "news sites" need to push a story before it can be a separate controversy section? Do you work for Beutler Ink or any corporation affiliated with Steve Huffman, or have you had any interactions with he or any of those entities outside of Wikipedia?

It would absolutely be a violation of WP:UNDUE and a WP:BLP to split out one single event consisting of two sentences into a separate controversy section. It is apparent from your edits that your purpose in editing this article is to portray the subject in the worst possible light, which runs completely contrary to the neutrality expected on Wikipedia. You do not have consensus for the changes you are trying to make and you will not be able to obtain that consensus because your changes represent blatant policy violations. Casting aspersions by suggesting editors who are attempting to uphold our core policies are somehow affiliated with Huffman does nothing to dispel the view that you are here to push a specific point of view. Do you plan on covering the incident for your article? If so, it is a distinct conflict of interest for you to be editing the article directly. -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 22:04, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, it wouldn't. The article wasn't edited. There have been numerous posts and talk since the incident that suggested it be its own section, and numerous edit wars, none of which I was a part of until recently. What I did was add a section header to conform to Wikipedia standards. You sure are angry about a page you haven't cared about before. If you'd like to throw more of a tantrum, feel free to head over to either of our user pages so we dont waste space here with your childish rants. If you won't answer my questions regarding your personal bias please stop editing the page. Unlike both sides of this edit war in the past I am neither a Trump hater or supporter. Siihb (talk) 01:29, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As to your demands about who can edit this page see WP:OWN. You have provided no evidence of personal bias by any other editors. The only childish rants here are yours. MarnetteD|Talk 01:41, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think you may need a refresher on the meaning of the word "demands" as well. Regarding the personal bias, this began when opencooper reverted an edit that added a section in line with the rules of wikipedia which I have quoted repeatedly. The edits done by opencooper on behalf of Beutler Ink who acknowledged in their requests that they were acting as paid agents for Huffman are visible to anyone clicking the history of this page. Siihb (talk) 01:52, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
User:Siihb - I usually pay very little attention to an editor who always erases messages from their own talk page while leaving a lot of messages on other editors' talk pages and on article talk pages. It usually indicates an editor with an open mouth and closed ears. In other words, the censorship that I am observing is of User talk:Siihb. I am saying that here rather than on User talk:Siihb. Robert McClenon (talk) 07:11, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Bobbie, I am not big on this here courtesy on Wikipedia, mostly because I've seen none from anyone else. If what I am doing isn't permitted, why allow it? It is doubly ironic given that the last message I left on your page has a giant thing hiding it that says The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it. Back on topic.....I will again reference the Matt Lauer page showing very clearly a scandal with which he was associated with being ITS OWN SEPARATE SECTION. Again, we are discussing how an incident where someone engaged in comment changing, which has devolved into comment changing. This is an open source information site. Are we really squabbling over formatting on one page over another? If this isn't allowed on this page, can we have the Matt Lauer section about his scandals changed to be consistent? Its baffling that this is even an argument. Siihb (talk) 17:04, 26 October 2019 (UTC)::::::And given that we have paid editors ON THAT VERY PAGE the whole process does not come off as transparent. It comes off as hey here is this rich powerful dude, who paid wikipedia people to fluff his content, and now his article is inconsistent with other wikipedia articles for example: Matt Lauer. Of important other note is that I am not the first, second, etc person to make these exact same statements. At some point the people on this page need to acknowledge that this was a major scandal specific to Huffman and that the readers deserve to see it separated as its own section, to be in line with other Wikipedia articles. Lauer is just the first that comes to mind. Siihb (talk) 17:09, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The comment controversy needs its own section.

This will bring it in line with Wikipedia guidelines, and consistent with other articles, such as Matt Lauer, or for someone in a similar line of work, Mark Zuckerberg. Both Lauer's and Zuckerberg's articles have scandals/controversies broken out under bolded headings per Wikipedia guidelines. It is time the Huffman page followed suit.
