Revision as of 00:32, 3 January 2024

I take requests for image and source reviews on historical topics at A-Class and Featured level. Please post all requests on this page.

Requesting your attention @ a discussion

Hi, I happen to come across a 3rd opinion request by (student) editor @ WP:3O regarding ongoing discussion @ Talk:Poverty industrial complex#Recent reverted edits, which in part, seems, relates to article scope and WP:DUE.

Since you seem to have contributed to the Industrial complex related articles, you may want to review disputed changes and share your inputs as and when time permits you. Bookku (talk) 05:35, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Armenian Genocide recognition map recolouring

Hi Buidhe,

I'm MtPenguinMonster, the creator of the recoloured version of your Armenian Genocide recognition map. I created the recolouring after a colour-blind reader told me that the map was difficult to read. I chose the colours blue and black as per H:Colorblind to make the image more accessible. I notice you reverted my edits introducing the recoloured map to the articles, claiming that your colour scheme is clearer to 97% of readers. While I agree that using red and green is intuitive for non-colour-blind readers, the shades your map uses are inaccessible to people with red-green colour-blindness. I suggest that you choose a more accessible colour scheme, such as one suggested by H:Colorblind or Commons:Commons:Creating accessible illustrations, or better yet, find a way to construct the map such that colour is not the only method for distinguishing the countries that recognise, are neutral on, or deny the Armenian Genocide.

--MtPenguinMonster (talk) 11:06, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While improving accessibility is important if it can be done without affecting the reading experience of most readers, I don't think it is an improvement to make changes that are negative for the majority of readers in order to benefit a small fraction. I wish there was some setting so that we could have two options for an image and display one as default and another if color blind option is selected in preferences. Recoloured version
I've produced a new version of the recoloured image which uses more intuitive colours while remaining accessible. I chose bluish-green and vermillion from Commons:Commons:Creating accessible illustrations. Hopefully this version is beneficial to everyone.
--MtPenguinMonster (talk) 05:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have no objection to this color scheme. (t · c) buidhe 05:20, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Buidhe,

Just a reminder, when you are tagging articles created by block-evading sockpuppets using Twinkle, put the sockmaster (in this case, Friedjof) in the field, not the username of the sockpuppet or a link to the SPI case. Many thanks for your work. Liz Read! Talk! 02:59, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

OK, will do. (t · c) buidhe 03:00, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Blockade of Biafra

On 16 December 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Blockade of Biafra, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that at least one million civilians died as a result of the blockade of Biafra (child pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Blockade of Biafra. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Blockade of Biafra), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hook update
Your hook reached 34,715 views (1,446.5 per hour), making it one of the most viewed hooks of December 2023 – nice work!

ECvHR, ECtHR

I appreciate that examples of use don't make valid citations, but this academic paper seems to demonstrate the point, I think?

  • Francesca Biondi Dal Monte; Filippo Fontanelli (2008). "The Decisions No. 348 and 349/2007 of the Italian Constitutional Court: The Efficacy of the European Convention in the Italian Legal System". German Law Journal. 9 (7): 889–932. ... in contrast with the international obligations stated in Protocol 1 of the European Convention of Human Rights (hereinafter the "ECvHR"), Article 1. ... that the European Court of Human Rights (hereinafter, the "ECtHR") would inflict on Italy if the domestic legislation on expropriation were not to change, ...

Do you think I should cite that in my footnote? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 19:50, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Footnotes tax reader attention. In order to make it worthwhile to inform them of an uncommon acronym on a a different article subject it would need to be common (say30% as common). In this case it seems to be much less common than that. Just being mentioned in one source hardly qualifies for inclusion. (t · c) buidhe 22:17, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
JMF (talk · contribs) (t · c) buidhe 22:20, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
https://www.google.com/search?q=%22ECvHR%22 has many examples. I chose that one because it was a very explicit example in an academic paper. As I already said, I am fully aware that examples of use are not valid citations.
Neither form is going to be common since it is only needed when it is is needed. IMO, we need to respond to the begged question: since the same abbreviation is used for both the Court and the Convention, how is a reader supposed to know which one is intended? (On Wikipedia, it is easy because we have hyperlinks but that is not the norm on publications in general. And we only do it on first mention.) To me, a footnote strikes the right balance between ignoring the issue v very intrusive inline text.
If you still feel that what I have done is undue then of course initiate a wp:BRD discussion. I don't feel strongly about this other than believing the general principle that we should be as helpful to readers as we can without burying them in a mass of incidental detail. Where to draw the line is a subjective judgement that I guess is only resolved by consensus. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 00:35, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not remotely common though. The vast majority of sources that mention both and use ECtHR / ECHR or abbreviate without acronyms "The Court", "The Convention", etc.
You can easily check that it's not commonly used:
  • "ecvhr" "European convention on human rights" 48 scholar hits
  • "echr" "European convention on human rights" 60,000 scholar hits
Even if 90% of the "ECHR" hits are bogus and 100% of the "ECvHR" hits are legitimate, there is no way this acronym in any way meets the criteria for inclusion.
Only common abbreviations would make any sense to include. There is no evidence even a single reader has been confused by this. (t · c) buidhe 02:59, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all you do

I want you to know that my boyfriend (he is an avid nonfiction reader and not a Wikipedia editor) has not read a book in two weeks. Ever since I showed him about your userpage, he has been reading every single one of your FA and GAs and raving about them. I don't know how you manage to do so much around here but I'm so glad you do! Crunchydillpickle🥒 (talk) 06:20, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

Regarding article "Legality of the Israeli occupation of Palestine"

I was very impressed by the long list of articles you contributed and their very documented content. Nevertheless, reading the article "Legality of the Israeli occupation of Palestine" I was surprised to learn that there is not even a single reference to the Oslo agreement and all the subsequents attempts to end the Israeli occupation. These omissions , either on purpose or not , are making this article very, very biased and misleading. I wish you "Happy New Year" and a less biased article writing for year 2024! Wiki-pimpernel (talk) 05:42, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki-pimpernel My approach to this article was the same as to all other articles. I looked for sources specifically discussing the stated topic. The Oslo accords and other talks are not prominently mentioned in them, probably because they did not actually provide for the end of the Israeli occupation. If you can find sources that disagree, please be my guest and improve the article. (t · c) buidhe 06:32, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FAC review request

Hi! I've had my article 1964 Illinois House of Representatives election at FAC for a bit now; would you consider reviewing? Thanks :) Elli (talk | contribs) 19:00, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Elli, it looks like the image and source reviews are already done and I rarely do content reviews, sorry. (t · c) buidhe 01:16, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ah, thanks for looking (wasn't sure if Generalissima's review was sufficient for the source stuff since this is my first nomination and that's usually quite strict?) Elli (talk | contribs) 14:58, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

arbpia

Happy new year. Who decides whether something is under arbpia? Can you or I decide on our own? Or must an admin decide, or some other process? And must the article be so designated on its talk page, etc? 2603:7000:2101:AA00:1C4E:D0E0:D878:4811 (talk) 09:36, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

While admins would decide if there is reasonable doubt, in this case it seems pretty clear cut that the content is related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Feel free to ask any admin if you want a second opinion. (t · c) buidhe 15:06, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
