The Pittsburgh Penguins entered the playoffs as the Metropolitan Division's first seed. They defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round 4–2. After taking a 3–1 series lead following Game 4, they went on to lose the final three games as the New York Rangers defeated the Penguins in a 2–1 Game 7 decision.
