France participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The French entry was selected through a national final, organised by the French broadcaster France Télévisions. Twin Twin represented France with the song "Moustache".[1] France placed 26th (last) in the final, scoring 2 points. This was the first time in the history of the contest that France had placed last in a final.

Before Eurovision

National final

The French national final organised by France 3 to select France's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 consisted of two shows: the presentation show on 26 January 2014 and the results show on 2 March 2014. Both shows took place during the programme Les chansons d'abord, hosted by 2001 French Eurovision entrant Natasha St-Pier and broadcast on France 3 as well as online via the broadcaster's website.[2][3]

Competing entries

France 3 opened a submission period on 4 October 2013 in order for interested artists and songwriters to submit their proposals up until the deadline on 24 November 2013.[4] Songs were required to contain a majority of French language lyrics with a free language allowance for the remaining lyrics and should not be instrumental pieces that extensively lacked vocals.[5]

On 26 November 2013, a fourteen-member selection committee consisting of music industry professionals, representatives of France Télévisions and France Bleu, a Eurovision fan and a television viewer selected from a public competition reviewed the received submissions, shortlisted five entries after a blind audio listening and selected three to compete in the national final.[3] For the public competition organised by France 3 in collaboration with France Bleu, applicants were required to successfully answer three questions related to the Eurovision Song Contest in order to enter a draw. The selection committee consisted of Laurent Bentata (General Director of Stage Entertainment France), Bruno Berberes (casting and artistic director), Laura Cès (singer and comedian), Mary De Vivo (Director at Réservoir), Valérie Michelin (music manager), Franck Saurat (television and entertainment producer), Thierry Langlois (France 3 Programmes Director), Yann Chapellon (France Télévisions President and General Director of Distribution), Marie Claire Mezerette (France 3 Director of Games and Entertaintainment), Frédéric Valencak (Head of Delegation for France at the Eurovision Song Contest), Olivier Daube (France Ô representative), Dominique Bourron (France Bleu representative), Farouk Vallette (Eurovision fan) and Morgane Buret (public competition winner).[6] The competing artists were announced on 27 November 2013.[7][8]

Final

The presentation show took place on 26 January 2014 where the three artists presented their contest entries.[3][9] In addition to the performances of the competing entries, the show featured guest appearances by Eurovision Song Contest 1977 winner Marie Myriam, 2011 French Eurovision entrant Amaury Vassili and 2012 French Eurovision entrant Anggun.[10] Following the presentation show, the entries were given increased exposure and rotation on France 3 and France Bleu and the public was able to vote via telephone, SMS and online until 23 February 2014. The winner, "Moustache" performed by Twin Twin, was selected by the combination of the public vote (50%) and a jury panel (50%) and was announced on Les chansons d'abord on 2 March 2014.[9]

At Eurovision

As a member of the "Big Five", France automatically qualified for a place in the final, held on 10 May 2014. In addition to their participation in the final, France was assigned to vote in the first semi-final on 6 May 2014.[11] During the French delegation's press conference on 6 May 2014, France was allocated to compete in the second half of the final.[12] In the final, the producers of the show decided that France would perform 14th, following Sweden and preceding Russia.[13] France placed 26th and last in the final, scoring only 2 points.[14]

On stage, Twin Twin was joined by two backing dancers and a backing vocalist. The LED screens projected colourful moustache motifs.[15]

In France, the first semi-final was broadcast on France Ô with commentary by Audrey Chauveau and Bruno Berberes, while the final was broadcast on France 3 with commentary by Cyril Féraud and Natasha St-Pier.[9][16] The French spokesperson revealing the result of the French vote in the final was Elodie Suigo.[17]
