Admiral Ackbar (played by Timothy M. Rose, voiced by Erik Bauersfeld) is a character in the Star Wars fictional universe. He first appears in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and later is a supporting character in the Star Wars Expanded Universe of novels, video games, and comic books.

Depiction

As described in the Expanded Universe series, Admiral Ackbar became a representative to his planet Mon Calamari's ruling council shortly after he finished school.[1] After the Empire invaded Mon Calamari, Ackbar was captured and became a slave, for a time serving Grand Moff Tarkin.[1]

After being freed, Ackbar helped design the B-Wing starfighter and leads the Rebels' space forces at the Battle of Endor.[1] He is part of the New Republic's provisional government in Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy. He retires at some point before the beginning of The New Jedi Order series, but comes out of retirement to help fight the Yuuzhan Vong. Ackbar dies of old age shortly after the war ends.[1]

Admiral Ackbar's best-known line is "It's a trap!", which he utters in Return of the Jedi as the Empire ambushes the rebel fleet. This line is often parodied, such as by the animated show Robot Chicken in their Star Wars special episode.[citation needed] In an episode of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon imitates Ackbar, repeating the line, "it's a trap!". "It's a trap!" and "It's a tarp!", a modified version of the line, are both internet memes.

Ackbar is also a playable character in LucasArts' Lego Star Wars games and in Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. His ship, Home One, is playable in Star Wars: Empire at War

On February 11, 2010, both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report aired montages of various news organizations speculating that President Barack Obama's invitation of Republicans to a health care reform summit may be a trap, both closing with the clip of Ackbar saying "It's a trap!".

As of February 2010, students at the University of Mississippi continue a major push to elect Admiral Ackbar as their next on-field team mascot.[2] The team has been without an on-field mascot since 2003, following an administrative decision to remove the former mascot, Colonel Reb, due to controversy.
