Baek A-yeon (born March 11, 1993) is a South Korean singer and songwriter. She is well known as one of the final three contestants from the first season of the South Korean talent show series K-pop Star.

Early life and education

Baek was born on March 11, 1993 in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do. During her fifth year of elementary school she underwent treatment for cancer.[1] She is currently studying at the Department of Practical Music at Howon University.

Career

2011–12: K-Pop Star

Baek first appeared on the South Korean television audition show K-pop Star. She was one of the top three contestants, along with Park Ji-min and Lee Hi. After she was eliminated she was approached by a number of entertainment agencies seeking to sign her. Baek eventually signed with JYP Entertainment, the company of K-pop Star judge JYP.[2]

2012: I'm Baek

On September 2, Baek's debut album I'm Baek was announced. 2PM member Jun. K produced a song for her entitled "Always" and was featured in the song on her debut album.[3] On September 10, the music video for "Sad Song", a track composed by Super Changddai with lyrics by JYP, was revealed on YouTube. On September 13, she collaborated in a classic version of "Sad Song" with pianist Lee Jin Wook and Odd Eye. On December 15, Baek released her first original soundtrack song, entitled "Daddy Long Legs," for the drama Cheongdam-dong Alice OST album.[4]

2013–14: A Good Girl

On June 11, a teaser video for Baek's second mini album, A Good Girl was released featuring Baek alongside miss A's Jia and Suzy.[5][6] In 2013, Baek released two original soundtrack tracks for different dramas, the first called "Introduction to Love," was released on April 10 for the drama When a Man Falls in Love and the second, called "Tears Are Also Love", was released on July 18 for the Goddess of Fire OST.[4]

In 2014, Baek released a soundtrack addition entitled "The Three Things I Have Left for the drama Angel Eyes and a track called "Morning of Canon" for the drama Fated to Love You OST album.[4]

2015–present: "Shouldn't Have", "So-So" and Bittersweet

After a two-year hiatus, JYP Entertainment dropped a lyric music video for Baek's first self-composed song called Shouldn't Have featuring DAY6's Young K on May 20, 2015 .[7] The song reached number one spot on several music charts in June, one month after its release.[8] She first performed "Shouldn't Have" on Show! Music Core on June 13.[9] In 2015, Baek released an original soundtrack called "So We Are" for the drama Yong-pal.

On May 15, 2016 JYP Entertainment dropped a teaser image for Baek's upcoming comeback in May with a new single entitled So-So.[10] On May 24, she officially released her second single So-So along with another single called Something to Say; both of the singles were self-composed.[11]Baek A Yeon released holiday single Just Because featuring GOT7 member JB on November 30.[12]

Baek released her third extended play Bittersweet on May 29, 2017. The album contains six tracks, with the lead single titled "Sweet Lies" featuring the retro-inspired barbershop trio The Barberettes.
