The Chennai Super Kings–Mumbai Indians rivalry is a sports rivalry between the cricket teams of Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and defunct Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20).[1][2][3][4] The two teams have played each other 24 times with Mumbai Indians winning more number of times (13).[5]
The clash between the teams is intense. The two teams met each other for the first time on 23 April 2008 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where the Super Kings prevailed over their counterparts by 6 runs in a high-scoring match.[6]
CSK and MI are the only two IPL teams who have met each other the most number of times. The winning streak of 10 wins at both teams' respective home grounds of MI & CSK have been defeated by CSK & MI on 10 May 2014 and 8 May 2015 respectively. These both teams have played most number of matches, qualifiers and finals than any remaining teams of the IPL tournament.
These are the only 2 teams in the IPL who have faced each other more than once(Three times) in the Finals of the IPL tournament, with CSK winning the trophy in 2010 and MI winning the IPL in 2013 and 2015.[7] MI and CSK are the most successful in the now abandoned CLT20 both winning the tournament 2 times each in its 6 editions.
The highest runs scorer from these two teams is Suresh Raina while the leading wicket taker is Lasith Malinga.
