Fallout is an upcoming American post-apocalyptic drama television series developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, through their Kilter Films production company, for Amazon Prime Video. It is based on the role-playing video game franchise created by Interplay Entertainment and now owned by Bethesda Softworks.

Amazon purchased the rights to produce a live-action project in 2020, and the show was announced that July, with Kilter Films joined by Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks in the production. Joy and Nolan were announced as the head writers, and Bethesda Game Studios producer Todd Howard, who directed various games in the series, signed on to executive produce alongside Joy and Nolan. The duo of Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner were hired as the series' showrunners in January 2022, and Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell were cast in February and March, respectively.

Fallout is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 12, 2024.

Premise

The show depicts the aftermath of a nuclear war in an alternate history of a 1950s-esque retrofuturistic world.

Episodes

Jonathan Nolan directs the first three episodes.[1]

Production

It was announced in July 2020 that a television adaptation of the video game franchise had received a series commitment from Amazon Studios developed by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.[2] Joy described the series as "a gonzo, crazy, funny, adventure, and mindfuck like none you’ve ever seen before".[3]

Nolan will direct the pilot episode. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner were hired as showrunners for the series.[4] In February, Walton Goggins was cast in a lead role as a currently-unnamed Ghoul.[5] In March, Ella Purnell joined the cast.[6] In June, Kyle MacLachlan, Xelia Mendes-Jones and Aaron Moten joined as regulars.[7] Filming began on July 5, 2022, in New Jersey, New York and Utah.[8]

In October 2023, additional casting including Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams and Zach Cherry was announced.[9]

The show was confirmed to be set within the same continuity as the franchise during an interview on November 28, 2023 since Howard wanted to avoid adapting any of the previous games and sought for an original story to be told instead.[1]

Filming

Stuart Dryburgh and Teodoro Maniaci serve as cinematographers.[10][11]

Release

Fallout is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 12, 2024.[12][9]
