- ^Note 36 : On 3 November 2009, Australian High Commissioner James Batley was expelled from Fiji by Frank Bainimarama, who accused him and his New Zealand counterpart of interfering in Fijian domestic politics. Bainimarama also recalled Fijian High Commissioners in Australia and New Zealand.[143] In July 2012, after trilateral discussions between Australia, Fiji and New Zealand, Australia and New Zealand decided to restore full diplomatic relations with Fiji, and a mutual exchange of High Commissioners would take place with the island nation.[144] Australian Foreign Minister, Bob Carr, appointed Margaret Twomey as the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji on 15 December 2012.[145] As of March 2013, the Fijians had still not approved Twomey's visa, leading Bob Carr to opine that the process of resumption of full diplomatic relations between the two countries had been suspended by the Fijian government.[146]
