Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater[b][c] is an upcoming action-adventure stealth video game developed and published by Konami. It is a remake of the 2004 game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. As with the original game, the narrative is set in 1964 and follows a FOX operative codenamed Naked Snake, who must attempt to save a Russian rocket scientist and sabotage the activation of a nuclear-powered superweapon, while absolving his country from the suspicion of the Soviet Union amidst Cold War tensions and confronting his former mentor The Boss, who has defected to their side.

The remake of the game is the first major entry since the release and negative reception of Metal Gear Survive (2018), which marked Konami's initial exit from publishing AAA console games in favor of focusing on their arcade and mobile initiatives. Singaporean studio Virtuos provided additional development support. The game was officially announced in May 2023. It is expected to be released in 2024 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S.

Development

Following the departure of series creator Hideo Kojima from Konami and the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Konami's CEO Hideki Hayakawa announced in October 2015 that the company's intentions of largely pulling out of investing in the development and publishing of major AAA titles for consoles and PC, in favor of redirecting focus towards mobile gaming and their presence in arcades.[2] Following the release of spin-off game Metal Gear Survive (2018), which was a critical and commercial failure, the future of the Metal Gear franchise became uncertain.[3] In October 2021, former Video Games Chronicle writer Andy Robinson reported that Konami was in the process of rejuvenating their presence in the mainstream video game industry by refocusing on their premium game development efforts, including beginning production on multiple new projects in franchises that had been subsequently de-prioritized by the publisher in their transition towards arcade and mobile game ventures.[4]

The remake was a co-production between the internal development team at Konami Digital Entertainment (KDE) responsible for previous Metal Gear games, and Virtuos as a support studio, in addition to the latter helping port the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection games to modern platforms.[5] Konami chose to remake Snake Eater over other Metal Gear titles was due to its nature as an origin story for the franchise, that depicted the character of Big Boss in his formative years. Konami additionally confirmed that neither Hideo Kojima or original artist Yoji Shinkawa were involved in the remake, but that the goal of the development team was to produce a faithful adaptation of the original story, clarifying that there would be no new additions on top of the existing narrative.[6] The usage of the Delta symbol (Δ) in the game's titling was meant to honor the symbol's meaning of a "change" or "difference" without changing structure, relating it to the game being a faithful remake of the original Metal Gear Solid 3.[7]

The remake would utilize the game's original voice cast by reusing audio from the original release of Snake Eater, as opposed to the actors re-recording their roles.[8][9] This was largely due to the respective deaths of the Japanese seiyuus for the characters Donald Anderson / Sigint (Keiji Fujiwara; died in 2020), Colonel Volgin (Kenji Utsumi; died in 2013), Aleksandr Granin (Takeshi Aono; died in 2012), The Fear (Kazumi Tanaka; died in 2007), and the fictionalized President Lyndon B. Johnson (Shinji Nakae; died in 2007).[6]

Release

The game was officially announced for PlayStation 5 on May 24, 2023 during Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation Showcase alongside the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 compilation comprising the first five installments of the Metal Gear series, including the original version of Snake Eater. Following the presentation, the title was confirmed to also be releasing on Xbox Series X/S and Windows via Steam.[10][11] The game is expected to be released in 2024.[12]
